  • Ark shell was known as shellfish that had hemoglobin as blood pigment and the action of mecidine, was consumed the great part of it as raw material, though it was produced about 13,000 M/T per year. Ark shell was processed the infinitesimal quantity as conned product, bout canned ark shell had problem that occurrenced discoloration after heat treatment during processing and storage. This discoloration mechanism during processing and storage was not cleared. This study was carried out to understand characteristics of the hemoglobin as blood pigment and carotenoid as meat pigment in ark shell and management of proper processing conditions for prevention of oxidation and discoloration by thermal treatment. When treated by digestion of 0.1% BHA, 0.1% Tenox-II, 0.5% Na2EDTA, 0.05% NDGA and 3% salt soln., 0.1% BHA solution was most suitable for stability of carotenoid that the retention ratio of carotenoids were 63.1% after heating to 116$^{\circ}C$ for 120 minutes. In preparation of canned ark shell and storage at 37$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$ for 60 days, the chemical composition, pH and salinity ere stable. And contents of total carotenoid were decreased slightly from 0.83mg% to 0.727mg%. The viable cell count were 6.92$\times$103 cfu/ml at raw ark shell, after processed and storage were not detected. The predominant amino acids in the raw ark shell were glutamic acid(19.7%), arginine(16.0%), glycine(12.6%), alanine(12.2%) and aspartic acid(7.6%). When 60 days stored, the contents of amino acid were stable. And the predominant nuclotide and their related compounds in the raw ark shell were hypoxanthine(2.14$\mu$mol/g), IMP(1.94$\mu$mol/g) and ATP(0.87$\mu$mol/g), and storage at 37$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$ for 60 days, the quantity order were same as raw material.

  • Eco-friendly acrylic resin/clay nanocomposites containing pristine montmorillonite (PM) or modified clays (30B and 25A) were prepared from acrylic and styrenic monomers using non-aqueous dispersion (NAD) polymerization. Effect of nanoclays on physical properties of polymerization product and resulting nanocomposites was investigated. In view of NAD particle stability, addition of nanoclay at the beginning of polymerization is proved to be good. Results of gel fraction, acid value and viscosity of the NAD product showed that nanocomposites containing clay 25A showed better physical properties than the ones with other clays. GPC results exhibit the increase in molecular weight and decrease in polydispersity index for the 25A nanocomposite. Increase in layer distance confirmed from XRD analysis showed good dispersion of 25A in the nanocomposite. Thermal and dynamic mechanical analysis showed that highest glass transition temperature and storage modulus for 25A nanocomposites. These results indicate that 25A nanoclay gives the best properties in the process of non-aqueous dispersion polymerization of acrylic resin/nanoclay nanocomposites.

  • Digital ink-jet printing system has many advantages such as fast and fine printing of various images, high efficiency and low cost process. Generally digital ink-jet printing requires ceramic pigments of cyan, magenta, yellow and black with thermal and glaze stability above $1000^{\circ}C$ for the application of porcelain product design. In this study, pink-red colored $CaO-SnO_2-Cr_2O_3-SiO_2$ pigment was synthesized using solid state reaction. The synthesis conditions of $Ca(Cr,Sn)SiO_5$ pigment such as annealing temperature, amount of mineralizer and non-stoichiometric composition were optimized. Crystal structure and morphology of the obtained $Ca(Cr,Sn)SiO_5$ pigment were analyzed using XRD, SEM, PSA, FT-IR and effect of Cr substitution on the pigment color was analyzed using Uv-vis. spectrophotometer and CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ measurement.

  • A sulfonated activated carbon (AC-$SO_3H$) was used as a solid acid catalyst for dehydration of sorbitol to isosorbide and its catalytic performance was compared with the commercial solid acid such as acidic ion exchange resin, Amberlyst-36, and sulfated copper oxide. The catalytic performance with 100% sorbitol conversion and 52% isosorbide selectivity was obtained over AC-$SO_3H$ at 423.15 K. Although AC-$SO_3H$ possessed only 0.5 mmol/g of sulfur content, it showed the similar dehydration activity of sorbitol to isosorbide with Amberlyst-36 (5.4 mmol/g) at 423.15 K. Based on the high thermal and chemical stability of AC-$SO_3H$, one-step reactive distillation, where isosorbide separation can be carried out simultaneously with sorbitol dehydration, was tried to increase the recovery yield of isosobide from sorbitol. The reactive distillation process using AC-$SO_3H$, the turnover number of AC-$SO_3H$ was 4 times higher than the conventional two-step process using sulfuric acid.

  • New PPV based conjugated polymers, containing terphenyl units, were prepared as the electroluminescent (EL) layer in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The prepared polymers, poly[2,5-bis(4-(2-etylhexyloxy)phenyl)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (BEHP-PPV), poly[2-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-5-(4-(4-(2-etylhexyloxy)phenyl)phenyl)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (EEPP-PPV) and poly[2-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-5-(9,9-bis(2-etylhexyl)fluorenyl)-1,4 phenylenevinylene] (EHF-PPV), were soluble in common organic solvents and used as the EL layer in double layer light-emitting diodes (LEDs) (ITO/PEDOT/polymer/Al). The polymers were prepared by the Gilch reaction. The number-average molecular weight $(M_n)$, weight-average molecular weight $(M_w)$, and the polydispersities (PDI) of these polymers were in the range of 9000-58000, 27000-231000, 2.9-3.9, respectively. These polymers have quite good thermal stability with decomposition starting above 320-350. The polymers show photoluminescence (PL) with maximum peaks at around 526-562 nm (exciting wavelength, 410 nm) and blue EL with maximum peaks at around $\lambda_{max}$ = 526-552 nm. The current-voltageluminance (I-V-L) characteristics of polymers show turn-on voltages of 5 V. Even though both of EEPP-PPV and BEHP-PPV have the same terphenyl group in the repeating unit, EEPP-PPV with directly substituted alkoxy group in the back bone has longer effective conjugation length than BEHP-PPV, and exhibits red shift in the PL spectra. Both of EEPP-PPV and EHF-PPV have ter-phenyl units and directly substituted alkoxy group in back bone. EHF-PPV with fluorenyl unit attached to the PPV backbone has shorter effective conjugation length than EEPP-PPV with biphenyl unit, and exhibits blue shift in the PL spectra.

  • A series of 20 wt % $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ and 3 wt % $Al_2O_3$ surface treatments were applied to $Li[Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.54}Co_{0.13}Ni_{0.13}]O_2$ substrates. The $Li[Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.54}Co_{0.13}Ni_{0.13}]O_2$ substrates were synthesized using a co-precipitation method. Sample (a) was left pristine and variations of the 20 wt % $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ and 3 wt % $Al_2O_3$ were applied to samples (b), (c) and (d). XRD was used to verify the space group of the samples as R$\bar{3}$m. Additional morphology and particle size data were obtained using SEM imagery. The $Al_2O_3$ coating layers of sample (b) and (d) were confirmed by TEM images and EDS mapping of the SEM images. 2032-type coin cells were fabricated in a glove box in order to investigate their electrochemical properties. The cells were charged and discharged at room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$) between 2.0V and 4.8V during the first cycle. The cells were then charged and discharged between 2.0V and 4.6V in subsequent cycles. Sample (d) exhibited lower irreversible capacity loss (ICL) in the first charge-discharge cycle as compared to sample (c). Sample (d) also had a higher discharge capacity of ~250 mAh/g during the first and second charge-discharge cycles when compared with sample (c). The rate capability of the $Al_2O_3$-coated sample (b) and (d) was lower when compared with sample (a) and (c). Sample (d), coated with $Al_2O_3$ after the surface treatment with $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, showed an improvement in cycle performance as well as an enhancement of discharge capacity. The thermal stability of sample (d) was higher than that of the sample (c) as the result of DSC.

  • Principles of a novel pulse growing method are described. The method realized in the crystal growing on a seed from melts under raw melt feeding provided a more reliable control of the crystallization process when producing large alkali halide crystals. The slow natural convection of the melt in the crucible at a constant melt level is intensified by rotating the crucible, while the crystal rotation favors a more symmetrical distribution of thermal stresses over the crystal cross-section. Optimum rotation parameters for the crucible and crystal have been determined. The spatial position oi the solid/liquid phase interface relatively to the melt surface, heaters and the crucible elements are considered. Basing on that consideration, a novel criterion is stated, that is, the immersion extent of the crystallization front (CF) convex toward the melt. When the crystal grows at a <> CF immersion, the raised CF may tear off from the melt partially or completely due to its weight. This results in avoid formation in the crystal. Experimental data on the radial crystal growth speed are discussed. This speed defines the formation of a gas phase layer at the crystal surface. The layer thickness il a function of time a temperature at specific values of pressure in the furnace and the free melt surface dimensions in the gap between the crystal and crucible wall. Analytical expressions have been derived for the impurity component mass transfer at the steady-state growth stage describing two independent processes, the impurity mass transfer along the <> path and its transit along the <> one. The heater (and thus the melt) temperature variation is inherent in any control system. It has been shown that when random temperature changes occur causing its lowering at a rate exceeding $0.5^{\circ}C/min$, a kind of the CF decoration by foreign impurities or by gas bubbles takes place. Short-term temperature changes at one heater or both result in local (i.e., at the front) redistribution of the preset axial growth speed.

  • Organosilicone-based surfactants consist of hydrophobic organosilicone groups coupled to hydrophilic polar groups. Organosilicone surfactants have been widely used in many industrial fields starting from polyurethane foam to construction materials, cosmetics, paints & inks, agrochemicals, etc., because of their low surface tension, lubricity, spreading, water repellency and thermal and chemical stability, resulted from the unique properties of organosilicone. Especially, trisiloxane surfactants, having low molecular weight organosilicone as hydrophobe, exhibit low surface tension and excellent wettability and spreadability, leading to their applications as super wetter/super spreader, but have the disadvantage of vulnerability to hydrolysis. A variety of trisiloxane surfactant structures are required to provide the functional improvement and the defect resolution for reflecting the necessities in the various applications. This review covers the synthetic schemes of reactive trisiloxanes as hydrophobic siloxane backbones, the main reaction schemes, such as hydrosilylation reaction, for coupling reactive trisiloxanes to hydrophilic groups, and the synthetic schemes of the main trisiloxane surfactants including polyether-, carbohydrate-, gemini-, bolaform-, double trisiloxane-type surfactants.

  • Zinc oxide is, one of metal oxide semiconductor, harmless to human and environment-friendly. It has excellent chemical and thermal stability properties. Wurtzite-zinc oxide is a large band gap energy of 3.37 eV and high exciton binding energy of 60 meV. It can be applied to various fields, such as solar cells, degradation of the dye waste, the gas sensor. The photocatalytic activity of zinc oxide is varied according to the particle shape and change of crystallinity. Therefore, It is very important to specify the additives and the experimental variables. In this study, the zinc oxide were synthesized by using a microwave assisted hydrothermal synthesis. The precursor was used as the zinc nitrate, the pH value was controlled as 11 by NaOH. Surfactants are the ethanolamine, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, sodium dodecyl sulfate, sorbitan monooleate was added by changing the concentration. • Lignocellulosic biomass is a renewable resource for production of biofuels and biochemicals. Furfural (FF) is an important platform chemical catalytically derived from the hemicellulose fraction of biomass. Tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) is a FF derivative and can be used as an eco-friendly solvent with thermal and chemical stability. Despite large numbers of experimental studies for catalytic conversion of FF to THFA, few research have conducted on the economic feasibility for large-scale THFA production from FF. At the stage of assessment of the potential for commercialization of conversion technology, a large-scale process study is required to identify technological bottleneck and to obtain information for solving scale-up problems. In this study, process simulation and technoeconomic evaluation for catalytic conversion of FF to THFA are performed, as the following three steps: integrated process design, heat integration, and economic evaluation. First, a large-scale process including conversion and separation processes is designed based on experimental results. When the FF processing rate is 255 tonnes per day, the FF-to-THFA yields are 63.2~67.9 mol%. After heat integration, the heating requirements are reduced by 14.4~16.4%. Finally, we analyze the cost drivers and calculate minimum selling price of THFA by economic evaluation. The minimum selling price of THFA for the developed process are $2,120~2,340 per tonne, which are close to the current THFA market price.
