  • A Heat Recovery Steam Generator(HRSG) is the main component of a Combined Cycle Power Plant(CCPP). It is a very large structure that is made from relatively thin metal sheets. Therefore, the structural integrity of an HRSG is very important to ensure safe operation during plant lifetime. In particular, thermal deformation and thermal fatigue have been revealed as the main causes of the mechanical degradation of an HRSG. In order to prevent unexpected damage, safety evaluation based on a large-scale analysis is necessary. Therefore, this study aims to improve the safety of HRSG by using Finite Element Analysis(FEA) results derived from large-scale analysis. Furthermore, the modified design is verified by comparing it with the original one. This result will be used as basic data for improving the safety of a vertical-type HRSG.

  • The applications of thermoelectric generators (TEGs) have received a lot of attention both in terms of harvesting waste thermal energy and the need for multi-levels of power. It is critical to track the optimum electrical operating point using DC to DC converters controlled by a pulse that is generated through a maximum power point tracking algorithm (MPPT). In this paper, the hardware implementation of a short-current pulse algorithm has been demonstrated under steady stated and transient conditions. In addition, the MPPT algorithm has been proposed, which is one of the most effective and applicable algorithms for obtaining the maximum power point of TEGs. During this study, the proposed prototype has been validated both analytically and experimentally. It has also demonstrated successful performance, which highlights the claimed advantages of the proposed MPPT solution.

  • Small-scale reactors have recently attracted attention as a potential power generation source for the future. The Regional Energy Research Institute for Next Generation is currently developing a small-scale reactor called Regional Energy rX 10 MVA (REX-10). The current paper deals with a power system to be used with small-scale reactors for multi-purpose regional energy systems. This small nuclear system can supply electric and thermal energy like a co-generation system. The electrical model of the REX-10 has been developed as a part of the SCADA system. REX-10's dynamic and electromagnetic performance on the power system is analyzed. Simulations are carried out on a test system based on Ulleung Island's power system to validate REX-10 availability on a power system. RSCAD/RTDS and PSS/E software tools are used for the simulation.

  • The industrial revolution in England was based on the manufacturing systems by the power of water mill and rapidly progressed by the innovation of steam engine. It is no exaggeration to say that today's civilization is realized by the development of various types of power machinery, namely fluid machinery and heat engine. The electric energy is converted mainly from thermal energy (mainly steam) of mineral oil, coal and nuclear fuel through generator connected with steam turbine which is a kind of power machinery. There are various types of power machinery as shown in Tables 1a and 1b. They are classified into two types by use. One is absorption type of fluid and/or thermal energy, for examples, windmill and heat engine. The other is provision type of the energies for examples, pump, compressor and propulsion. By flow type, they are also classified by two types, turbo type and positive-displacement type. The turbo type began from water mill and windmill and evolve to steam turbine and finally to gas turbine. The positive-displacement type started from reciprocating water pump and developed into steam engine and changed to reciprocating combustion engine. The pumps and motors used in oil hydraulic system for power control are also positive-displacement type.

  • As our power system has changed the past undeveloped model causing the lacked supply of power to the civilized model that the remained one makes the voltage and the frequency rise at the middle of the night, the leading power factor operation of generators, that is, the under-exited operation is essentially to be needed, so, at a viewpoint of the stability of the power system, it is a very important factor. In this investigation. the equation of curves for each area on the capability curve has been studied at the above-mentioned viewpoint. Also, each capability curve for the operating power stations (Nuclear P/S, Thermal P/S, Hydrolic & pumping-up P/S Gas turbine P/S) has, been presented, and studied whether the leading power factor operational area is able to be expanded or not.

  • Diesel power plant can be used as a power supplier for the isolated place where consumption of electric power is variable. The reason is that mobility and durability of diesel engine is superior to those of other thermal engines. However, there are some disadvantages for using these diesel engines such as bigger vibratory excitation force comparing to the others, which result from high combustion pressure of cylinders and inertia force of piston reciprocating masses. In this paper, control and optimization of torsional vibration of 12K90MC-S engine for diesel power plant using uneven crank angles is identified by theoretical analysis and vibration measurement.

  • Many power plants built 20-30 years ago are facing problems associated with the excitation system used for controlling generator output voltage. After years of reliable operation, generation is experiencing increased down time due to maintenance associated with the exciting excitation equipment. Reliability of the excitation system has become an issue, especially where many of these generation plants may be critical to the internal processes used for manufacturing. Wear out mechanisms such as those associated with the wire wound rheostat the electromechanical voltage regulator, insulation failures of the rotating exciter and commutator deterioration have become real problems typical of many older installations. These are some of the issues that are affecting system reliability for older power plants. This paper will address typical problems associated with the old excitation systems and the justification for a replacement static excitation system used in many Paper Mills.

  • This paper proposes a Direct Power Control (DPC) scheme of improved command tracking capability for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) Medium Voltage (MV) Wind Turbines. Benchmarking is performed based on a neutral point clamped three-level back-to-back type voltage source converter. It is introduced to design the DPC modeling and propose DPC scheme of a three-level NPC (3L-NPC) converter. During the fault condition in wind farms, the proposed control scheme directly controls the generated output power to the command value from the hierarchical wind farm controller. The proposed control scheme is compared with conventional control scheme as respect to loss and thermal analysis. The DPC scheme of improved command tracking capability is confirmed through PLECS simulations. Simulation result shows that proposed control scheme achieves a much shorter transient time in a step response of generated output power. The proposed control scheme makes it possible to provide a good dynamic performance for PMSG MV wind turbine to generate a high quality output power under grid fault condition.

  • In the power system with an electric storage system that can increase utilization rate of the source of such new renewable energy, this paper introduces the approach on the daily unit commitment scheduling that determines simultaneously optimum operational condition and output of thermal generators and electric storage device. The unit commitment is one of the most important issues in economic operation and security of short-term operational plan of the power system. It is to determine on/off status of generator to minimize operational cost during the given period. The committed generator should satisfy various operational limitation such as estimated demand by system, spinning reserve condition within minimum operational cost. In order to determine on/off or charge/discharge/idle condition and output level of units and electric storage system, the MILP(Mixed Integer Linear Programming) is suggested. The proposed approach is the mixed method between LP(Linear Programming) and IP(integer programming) which seeks the value of real number and integer that maximize or minimize function objective within given condition. The daily unit commitment problem with the electric storage system is applied to MILP algorithm through linearization and formulation process. The proposed approach is applied to the test system.

  • In recent year, energy harvesting technologies from the ambient environments such as light, motion, wireless waves, and temperature again a lot of attraction form research community [1-5] due to its efficient solution in order to substitute for conventional power delivery methods, especially in wearable together with on-body applications. The drawbacks of battery-powered characteristic used in commodity applications lead to self-powered, long-lifetime circuit design. Thermoelectric generator, a solid-state sensor, is useful compared to the harvesting devices in order to enable self-sustained low-power applications. TEG based on the Seebeck effect is utilized to transfer thermal energy which is available with a temperature gradient into useful electrical energy. Depending on the temperature difference between two sides, amount of output power will be proportionally delivered. In this work, we illustrated a low-input voltage energy harvesting circuit applied discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) method for getting an adequate amount of energy from thermoelectric generator (TEG) for a specific wearable application. With a small temperature gradient harvested from human skin, the input voltage from the transducer is as low as 60mV, the proposed circuit, fabricated in a $0.6{\mu}m$ CMOS process, is capable of generating a regulated output voltage of 4.2V with an output power reaching to $40{\mu}W$. The proposed circuit is useful for powering energy to battery-less systems, such as wearable application devices.
