Thermal Stress Intensity Factors for Traction Free Cusp Cracks (트랙션이 없는 커스프 균열의 열응력세기계수에 관한 연구)

  • The thermal stress intensity factors (TSIF's) for the cusp cracks such as hypocycloid crack, symmetric airfoil crack and symmetric lip crack are determined by using Bogdanoff's complex variable approaches in plane thermoplasticity. The results are expressed in terms of the periodic functions of the direction of uniform heat flow. The TSIF's are shown to be sensitive to both the direction of uniform heat flow and be thermal boundary conditions. It is also shown that Fourence's solutions for an insulated circular hole and Sih's solutions for an insulated Griffith crack are derived from the results of the stress and displacement fields for the hypocycloid crack and the TSIF's for the various cusp cracks, respectively.

  • In the present study, chopped henequen natural fibers without and with surface modification by electron beam (E-beam) treatment were incorporated into a polypropylene matrix. Prior to composite fabrication, a bundle of raw henequen fibers were treated at various E-beam intensities from 10 kGy to 500 kGy. The effect of E-beam intensity on the interfacial, mechanical and thermal properties of randomly oriented henequen/polypropylene composites with the fiber contents of 40 vol% was investigated focusing on the interfacial shear strength, flexural and tensile properties, dynamic mechanical properties, thermal stability, and fracture behavior. Each characteristic of the material strongly depended on the E-beam intensity irradiated, showing an increasing or decreasing effect. The present study demonstrates that henequen fiber surfaces can be modified successfully with an appropriate dosage of electron beam and use of a low E-beam intensity of 10 kGy results in the improvement of the interfacial properties, flexural properties, tensile properties, dynamic mechanical properties and thermal stability of henequen/polypropylene composites.

Thermal behavior of Alkanethiolate Self-Assembled Monolayers on the Cu(111)

  • Self-assembled monolayers(SAMs) of alkanethiol have been formed on the Cu(111) surfaces in vacuum. The thermal behavior of octanethiol-based SAMs on the Cu(111) surface have been examined in ultrahigh vacuum. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), it is found that the monolayers are stable up to about 500K in vacuum. Decomposition is signaled by a decrease in the intensity of C ls peak, accompanied by an increase of the intensity of the Cu 2p peak. However, the intensity of the S 2p peak doesn't change much as a function of annealing temperature. Thermal the decomposition mass spectra show that n-alkene is the predominant species desorbing from the surface in the 500-600K temperature range. The totality of these data leads to the conclusion that the monolayers decompose through the S-C bond cleavage by hydrogen elimination reaction, resulting in the desorption of hydrocarbon moiety as n-alkene. Following this initial decomposition step, Cu2S layers are observed on the surface. For comparison, attempts were also made to examine the thermal behavior of octanethiol-based SAMs on the Cu(111) surface in air. It has been shown that the SAMs on the Cu(111) surfaces begin to desorb with the oxidation of the thiolate to sulfonate at 400K. Upon annealing to 450K, the monolayer has almost completely desorbed as indicated by the virtual disappearance of the S 2p peak.

  • Experimental investigations were conducted for two hydrogen-nitrogen coaxial jet diffusion flames. A flame was a conventional coaxial jet diffusion flame and the other was a coaxial jet diffusion flame of which ambient air-jet turbulence was intensified. In this study, firstly two kinds of NOx measuring system were campared by using different convertors, secondly the NOx formation characteristics were investigated in order to examine the effect of turbulence intensity. In this study it is known that stainless convertor has some problem in the converting process from NO$_2$to NO in fuel rich region but molybdenum convertor can detect the amount of NOx correctly. The increase of turbulence intensity reduces the thermal NOx less than a half in our experiment and this effect is conspicuous near the nozzle. The conversion rate from NO to NO$_2$and the portion of NO$_2$among NOx are increased with turbulence intensity. These NOx measurements will help to understand the influences of turbulence intensity on NOx formation.

  • An analysis program for the evaluation of pressure vessel integrity under pressurized thermal shock (PTS) is developed. For given material properties and transient history such as temperature and pressure, the stress distribution is calculated and then stress intensity factors are obtained for a wide range of crack sizes. The stress intensity factors are compared with the fracture toughness to check if cracking is expected to occur during the transient. Using this program a round robin problem of PTS during a small break loss of coolant transient has been analyzed as a part of the international comparative assessment study. The allowable maximum reference nil-ductility transition temperatures are determined for various crack sizes.

  • Within the framework of anisotropic thermoelasticity, the problem of an interlaminar crack in a laminated fiber-reinforced composite subjected to a uniform heat flow is investigated. Under a state of generalized plane deformation, dissimilar anisotropic half-spaces with different fiber orientations are considered to be bound together by a matrix interlayer containing the crack. The interlayer models the matrix-rich interlaminar region of the fibrous composite laminate. Based on the flexibility/stiffness matrix approach, formulation of the current crack problem results in having to solve two sets of singular integral equations for temperature and thermal stress analyses. Numerical results are obtained, illustrating the parametric effects of laminate stacking sequence, relative crack size, crack location, crack surface partial insulation, and fiber volume fraction on the values of mixed mode thermal stress intensity factors.

  • Aviation obstacle lights including controller for the safe night aviation service have applied to high voltage transmission line of which height is from $60{\sim}180 m$, Fresnel lens made by Augustine Fresnel have been applied to light houses, These Fresnel lens were applied to aviation obstacle lights and have been universally used, It was reported that Fresnel lens for aviation obstacle light was used in the first place in Korea in 1987, LEDs have recently been applied to aviation obstacle lights, So, the optimum physical design is essential to the design of aviation obstacle light. In this study, optical and three dimensional modeling of LED module and globe lens were performed, And thermal analysis due to LED thermal source and service thermal condition in high voltage transmission line was performed and was analyzed comparing with experiments, The optimum design process of medium intensity LED aviation obstacle lights was constructed with three dimensional modeling, thermal analysis, and thermal experimental technique.

Theoretical models of threshold stress intensity factor and critical hydride length for delayed hydride cracking considering thermal stresses

  • Delayed hydride cracking (DHC) is an important failure mechanism for Zircaloy tubes in the demanding environment of nuclear reactors. The threshold stress intensity factor, $K_{IH}$, and critical hydride length, $l_C$, are important parameters to evaluate DHC. Theoretical models of them are developed for Zircaloy tubes undergoing non-homogenous temperature loading, with new stress distributions ahead of the crack tip and thermal stresses involved. A new stress distribution in the plastic zone ahead of the crack tip is proposed according to the fracture mechanics theory of second-order estimate of plastic zone size. The developed models with fewer fitting parameters are validated with the experimental results for $K_{IH}$ and $l_C$. The research results for radial cracking cases indicate that a better agreement for $K_{IH}$ can be achieved; the negative axial thermal stresses can lessen $K_{IH}$ and enlarge the critical hydride length, so its effect should be considered in the safety evaluation and constraint design for fuel rods; the critical hydride length $l_C$ changes slightly in a certain range of stress intensity factors, which interprets the phenomenon that the DHC velocity varies slowly in the steady crack growth stage. Besides, the sensitivity analysis of model parameters demonstrates that an increase in yield strength of zircaloy will result in a decrease in the critical hydride length $l_C$, and $K_{IH}$ will firstly decrease and then have a trend to increase with the yield strength of Zircaloy; higher fracture strength of hydrided zircaloy will lead to very high values of threshold stress intensity factor and critical hydride length at higher temperatures, which might be the main mechanism of crack arrest for some Zircaloy materials.

  • Effects of temperature dependent material properties on mixed mode fracture parameters of functionally graded materials subjected to thermal loading are investigated. A domain form of the $J_k$-integral method including temperature-dependent material properties and its numerical implementation using finite element analysis is presented. Temperature and displacement fields are calculated using finite element analysis and are used to compute mixed mode stress intensity factors using the $J_k$-integral. Numerical results indicate that temperature-dependency of material properties has considerable effect on the mixed-mode stress intensity factors of cracked functionally graded structures.

  • SPATE(Stress Pattern Analysis by Thermal Emission) can be effectively used to analyze the stress distribution of the orthotropic structure under the repeated load by non-contact. In this research, the measuring conception and method of stress intensity factor of orthotropic material using SPATE are suggested. The relationships between the maximum values of SPATE signal and $1/\sqrt{X'}$ (or $1/\sqrt{y'}$) are theoretically established in the vicinity of crack tip of the orthotropic material. It is certified through SPATE experiment that their linear quality is very excellent.
