Many concrete bridge decks develop transverse cracking shortly after construction. These cracks accelerate corrosion of reinforcing steel and lead to concrete deterioration, damage to components beneath the deck, unsightly appearance. These cracks shorten the service life and increase maintenance costs of bridge structures. In this study, VES-LMC overlay, which provides the same benefits as a conventional overlay, is designed to cure very quickly. Although the materials for VES overlays are more expensive, the cost is more than offset by the savings on traffic control and work zone safety measures. Otherwise, reaction of hydration occurs very rapidly in beginning step(concrete placing). As a results, thermal cracking can be occur by thermal stress in accordance with hydration-heat The purpose of this study was to estimate diagnosis of crack occurrence of VES-LMC through field tests at early-age.

Thermal stress induced by hydration heat may produce cracks in mass concrete structure, which can result in structural problems as well as bad appearance. To minimize crack occurrence in massive structural, thus, the study put an emphasis on the determination of optimized lift height and block size. In the parametric study different sizes and lift heights were used to measure the magnitudes of hydration heat and thermal stresses for 3 different types of concrete fabricated with 1 pure cement and 2 blended Portland cements. As a result of analysis. it was found that magnitude of hydration heat and the occurrence of thermal cracks depend on the restriction conditions and material characteristics, especially adiabatic material parameters. It was also found that optimized lift height and block size can be determined from an appropriate combination of the degree of inner and outer structural restrictions.

The heat of hydration of cement the causes the internal temperature rise at early age, particulary in massive concrete structures such as a mat-slab of nuclear reactor building or a dam or a large footing. As the result of the temperature rise and restraint of foundation, the thermal stress enough to induce concrete cracks can occur. Therefore, the prediction of the thermal stress is very important in the design and construction stages in order to control the cracks developed in massive concrete structures. And, more creep and shrinkage take place at elevated temperatures in young concrete, Thus the effect of creep and shrinkage must be considered for checking the safety and servicebility(crack, durability and leakage).

This paper reports the performance results of hydration heat control of mass concrete walls with pipe cooling system. The thickness of walls ranged from 0.9 to 2.2m. In order to investigate the effect of pipe cooling on the thermal and thermal crack characteristics, the pipe cooling was conducted for 42 walls, and the investigation of thermal cracks was conducted for 14 walls. Based on the investigation, the pipe cooling method decreased the peak temperature of about 13-2$0^{\circ}C$ and the thermal crack width of about 30% for mass concrete walls.

Thermal cracks are occurred when thermal stress due to the hydration of cement exceeds the tensile strength of concrete. In this study, the thermal stresses are investigated at the massive concrete like an anchorage of suspension bridge. The thermal crack can be controlled by considering the placing height, concrete type, pre-cooling and pipe cooling in the design stage.
The air gap between the metal and mold, formed by shrinkage during solidification, causes surface and subsurface cracks in the continuous casting process. Molten crack on the surface might also occur due to improper heat transfer between them. In order to compensate the air gap in mold design, the thermal contraction is an essential factor. In this study, the thermal contraction and expansion behaviors were examined from the ($\alpha$ and pearlite)/${\gamma}$ to ${\gamma}$/$\delta$ transformations in continuous casting steels by the commercial dilatometer and the self- assembled dilatometer with laser distance measurement. It was found that the thermal contraction and expansion behaviors were very dependant on the phase transformation of the ${\gamma}$/$\delta$ as well as ($\alpha$ and pearlite)/${\gamma}$. The sudden volume change from $\delta$ to ${\gamma}$ which might cause cracks in the continuous casting process, was observed on cooling just below the melting temperature by the self-assembled dilatometer.

While analyzing the specimens before and after the thermal shock test, we found that the power drop rate of the bare cell was 5.08%, while the power drop rate of the ribboned cell was 16.49%. In comparative terms, the efficiency was lower at the ribboned cell than at the bare cell. While analyzing through EL (Electroluminescence) shots and cross sections, we tried to decipher the exact cause of the power drop. Although mere color change of the cell was observed at the surface of the bare cell, no abnormality could be found inside the cell. On the surface of the ribboned cell, the short circuit of gridfinger extended from the front part of the front electrode of the ribboned cells. Therefore, cracks occurred on the surface of the cell. Cracks also appeared inside the cell. While analyzing the I-V curve, we determined an increase in the leakage current and an increase of resistances in series in the bare cell. In the ribboned cell, the resistances in parallel reduced remarkably. An increase of resistances in series could also be verified. Conclusively, we deduced that the power drop rate in the bare cell is a life span of the cell itself; aging is the cause of power drop rate in cells. In case of ribboned cell, the power drop rate was directly influenced by internal cracks and an intermetallic compound layer joining the ribbon at the front electrode.

There exist many types of pipe and component fatigue through vibrations, thermal fatigues or shifting. In some cases of thermal stratification/thermal fatigue, pipes & components are receiving thermal stress by means of material expansion and shrinkage by continuous thermal repetitive variation. Small cracks initially occur on the inside surface by thermal stress. These cracks grow in depth the pipe wall and finally come to a rupture. Pipe parts of susceptibility to thermal stratification and thermal fatigue are now being examined by conventional UT(ultrasonic test) as volumetric examination. It is difficult to fully satisfy the code & standards requirements because 3" weldolet weldments of RCS 16" pipe to 3" branch connection lines have complex structural shape. To solve the problems of conventional UT examination, we made a realistic mock-up and UT calibration block. We performed a simulation of phased array UT utilizing CIVA as NDE(Non-Destructive Examination) simulation software. Also we designed phased array UT transducer and wedge, optimal frequency by using simulation data. We performed phased array UT experiment through mock-up including artificial flaws(notch). The phased array UT technique is finally developed to improve the reliability of ultrasonic test at RCS 16" pipe to 3" branch connection weld.
When the low pressure injection molded parts are debinded by wicking and subsequent thermal pyrolysis the optimum transition point from wicking to thermal pyrolysis is just after the completion of the constant wicking rate period. Even when the partially debinded parts were heated at 5$^{\circ}C$/min after reaching the 1st falling rate period the debinding defects such as distortion and cracks were not found.
