  • Numerical simulations are conducted for the analysis of a thermal mass air flow sensor with periodic heating pulses on silicon-nitride ($Si_3N_4$) thin membrane structure. This study aims to find the locations of temperature sensors on the thin membrane and the heating pulse conditions, that the higher sensitivity can be achieved, for the development of a MEMS fabricated mass air flow sensor which is driven in periodic heating pulse. The simulations, thus, focus on the membrane temperature profile according to variation of the flow velocity, heating duration time and imposed power. The flow velocity of the simulations is ranging from 3 m/s to 35 m/s, heating duration time from 1 ms to 3 ms and imposed power from 50 mW to 90 mW. The corresponding Reynolds numbers vary from 1000 to 10000.

  • In this paper, the concept of infrared thermography(IRT), the principle of measurement of IRT and how to set up the IR camera for the nondestructive testing are described in detail. Also, its utilization and non-destructive testing(NDT) diagnosis are reviewed. By performing the periodic non-touched WDT through the estimation of thermal patterns related with the temperature for the surface targeted, IRT can be applied to the early prevention of the device failure. For the diagnosis utilization, thermal imaging patterns obtained from IRT for heated blocks with internal defects were estimated through the lion-destructive method and discussed the way of IRT estimation from the analysis of characteristics between material defects and thermal imaging patterns.

  • In this paper, we investigated a feasibility of applying highest and lowest temperatures of the next day forecasted from a meteorological observatory to operation of an air-conditioning system with thermal storage. First we investigated specific characteristics of the time series of forecasted temperatures and errors in Osaka from 1994 to 1996. Since the forecast error is not always small, it might be difficult to use the forecasted data without correction for the sizing and the control of the thermal storage system. On the other hand, the autocorrelation functions of the forecast errors decrease relatively slowly during high summer season when cooling thermal storage is required. Since the values of the autocorrelation function; for one day are larger than 0.4, not small, the forecast errors can be predicted by proper statistical analysis. Thus, the forecasted values of the highest temperatures for the next day were improved by using the stochastic time series models.

  • The bending vibration and thermal flutter instability of spacecraft booms modeled as circular thin-walled beams of closed cross-section and subjected to thermal radiation loading is investigated in this paper. The thin-walled beam model incorporates a number of nonclassical effects of transverse shear, primary and secondary warping, rotary inertia and anisotropy of constituent materials. Thermally induced vibration response characteristics of a composite thin walled beam exhibiting the circumferantially uniform system(CUS) configuration are exploited in connection with the structural flapwise bending-lagwise bending coupling resulting from directional properties of fiber reinforced composite materials and from ply stacking sequence. The numerical simulations display deflection time-history as a function of the ply-angle of fibers of the composite materials, damping factor, incident angle of solar heat flux, as well as the boundary of the thermal flutter instability domain. The adaptive control are provided by a system of piezoelectric devices whose sensing and actuating functions are combined and that are bonded or embedded into the host structure.

  • The radiator of the data storage and handling units onboard the earth observation satellite is a groove-type radiator covered with a shield because of the periodic high heat dissipation and design characteristics of arrangement and mountability of the unit. The effect of the groove-type radiator and that of the shield versus plane radiator were verified through the thermal vacuum test. Through the test result, the temperatures of the radiator and the heat exchange due to the view factor were analyzed by using the analytical method. Conclusively the thermal performance of the shield dissipation plate was verified.

  • Recent analysis on the thermophysical property of asteroids revealed that their thermal inertia decrease with their sizes at least for main belt asteroids. However, little is known about that of comet-like bodies. In this work we utilized a simple thermophysical model (TPM) to calculate the thermal inertia of a bare nucleus of the comet P/2006 HR30 (Siding Spring) and an asteroid in comet-like orbit 107P/(4015) Wilson-Harrington from AKARI observation data. From five spectroscopic observations of the targets, we find out that the former has thermal inertia of around $2,000J\;m^{-2}K^{-1}s^{-1/2}$ (using pV = 0.055) and the latter has about $1,000-2000J\;m^{-2}K^{-1}s^{-1/2}$ (using pV = 0.055 and 0.043, respectively). These are high enough for both of them to deposit water ice at few centimeters depth, and hence it is difficult to say they are cometary based on the results of this study. These values, however, dependent significantly on the errors of observation and the uncertainties of the input parameters, as well as other conditions which are ignored in simple TPM approach, such as shape model and surface roughness. Further detailed analyses on these cometary bodies will shed light on our understanding of the detailed surfacial characteristics of them.

  • We analyse the beam characteristics of the thermal-birefringence compensated symmetric resonator which consists of two laser rods with rod-end curvatures. The numerical results show that the stability and the beam quality can be improved in high power operation region when the rod-ends are made in the form of a negative lens. The thermal birefringence of the symmetric two-rods resonator is shown to be well compensated when the two rods closely contact each other.

  • As a field of MEMS, micro-heater fabricated by Au is being introduced and developed in recent years. Previous studies about thermal properties of various forms of micro-heater were not sufficient. In this work, numerical and experimental analysis of the heat generation and the temperature distribution of micro-heater packages for 8 different geometric cases were studied. We fabricated a micro-heater package with silicon wafer, on which Cr/Au layer was laminated before 8 geometric forms of micro-heater were patterned. In each cases, temperature distribution was measured with IR thermal camera. According to the experimental results, which show a good agreement with the results analyzed by CFD, it was found that at 0.5W, the temperature of micro-heater chip which contained $20000{\mu}m$-long, serpentine shaped micro-heater was elevated to a relatively high temperature of $78^{\circ}C$ Consequently, we proposed a geometry of micro-heater which has effective thermal characteristics.

  • Continuous Water-Soluble Organic Carbons (WSOC) by the Particle Into Liquid Sampler - Total Organic Carbon (PILS-TOC) analyzer were measured at the Seoul intensive monitoring site from June 17 through July 5 in 2014. In addition, the 24 hour integrated PM2.5 collected by Teflon and Quartz filters were analyzed for water soluble ions by Ion chromatography (IC), WSOC by TOC from water extracts, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) by carbon analyzer using the thermal optical transmittance (TOT) method, and mass fragment ions (m/z) related to alkanes and PAHs (Poly Aromatic Hydrocarbons) by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer-Thermal Desorption (GC/MS-TD). Based on the statistical analysis, four different Carbonaceous Thermal Distributions (CTDs) from OCEC thermal-gram were identified. This study discusses the primary and secondary sources of WSOC based on the Classified CTD, organic mass fragments, and diurnal patterns of WSOC. The results provide knowledge regarding the origins of WSOC and their behaviors.

  • A numerical study was conducted to calculate the cooling capacity variation of a power plant ACC (air-cooled condenser) caused by changes in operating conditions. A numerical model was developed using the ${\varepsilon}-NTU$ and finite volume method, containing 100 elements for a single low fin tube. The model was validated through a comparison of cooling capacity between the simulated values and manufacturer's data. Even though simple assumptions and previously presented heat transfer correlations were applied to the model, the prediction error was 1.9%. The simulated variables of the operating conditions were air velocity, air temperature, and mass flux. The analysis on the variation of thermal resistance along the tube showed that the water side thermal resistance was higher than the air side thermal resistance at the downstream end of the tube, indicating that the ACC capacity could be increased by applying technology to enhance in-tube flow condensation heat transfer.
