  • Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency(JAXA) has been conducting research and development of the Scramjet engines and their derivative combined cycle engines as hypersonic propulsion system for space access. Its history will be introduced first, and its recent advances, focusing on the engine performance progress, will follow. Finally, future plans for a flight test of scramjet and ground test of combined cycle engine will be introduced. Two types of test facilities for testing those hypersonic engines. namely, the 'Ramjet Engine Test Facility (RJTF)' and the 'High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel (HIEST)' were designed and fabricated during 1988 through 1996. These facilities can test engines under simulated flight Mach numbers up to 8 for the former, whereas beyond 8 for the latter, respectively. Several types of hydrogen-fueled scramjet engines have been designed, fabricated and tested under flight conditions of Mach 4, 6 and 8 in the RJTF since 1996. Initial test results showed that the thrust was insufficient because of occurrence of flow separation caused by combustion in the engines. These difficulty was later eliminated by boundary-layer bleeding and staged fuel injection. Their results were compared with theory to quantify achieved engine performances. The performances with regards to combustion, net thrust are discussed. We have reached the stage where positive net thrust can be attained for all the test coditions. Results of these engine tests will be discussed. We are also intensively attempting the improvement of thrust performance at high speed condition of Mach 8 to 15 in High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel (HIEST). Critical issues for this purposemay be air/fuel mixing enhancement, and temperature control of combustion gas to avoid thermal dissociation. To overcome these issues we developed the Hypermixier engine which applies stream-wise vortices for mixing enhancement, and the M12-engines which optimizes combustor entrance temperature. Moreover, we are going to conduct the flight experiment of the Hypermixer engine by utilizing flight test infrastructure (HyShot) provided by the University of Queensland in fall of 2005 for comparison with the HIEST result. The plan of the flight experiment is also presented.

Dynamics of lockstitch sewing process

  • During high speed sewing, the needle thread is exposed to dynamic loading, short strike loading, inertia forces, friction, rubbing, force of check spring, bending, pressure, friction, impact, shock and thermal influence. The dynamic thread loading/tension alters throughout the stitch formation cycle and along its passage through the machine. The greatest tensile force occurs at the moment of stitch stretching, when the take up lever pulls for required thread length through the tension regulator. These stresses act on the thread repeatedly and the thread passes 50-80 times through the fabric, the needle eye and the bobbin case mechanism, before getting incorporated into the seam, which result in upto 40% loss in tensile strength of the sewing thread. This damage in the sewing thread adversely affects its processing and functional performance. In this paper, the contribution of dynamic loading, passage through needle and fabric, and bobbin thread interaction in the loss in tensile properties has been studied. It is observed that the loss in tensile properties occurs mainly due to the bobbin thread interaction. Dynamic loading due to the action of take up lever also causes substantial loss in tenacity and breaking elongation of cotton threads.

  • 현재 열간단조 금형을 제작함에 있어 육성용접을 실시하는 방법이 금형강 STD61, STD11 등으로 제작하는 방법에 비해 보수나 비용적인 측면에서 이점을 가지고 있기 때문에 점차적으로 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 열간단조 공정에서 금형은 $1000^{\circ}C$이상의 고온재료와 반복접촉하게 된다. 이때 이형제의 사용은 급속냉각 및 급속가열의 열피로를 가속시킨다. 또한, 금형은 반복충격에 의한 기계적 피로를 받게 된다. 이러한 금형의 사용환경을 고려한 FCW는 종래 고가의 $2.8{\sim}3.2{\Phi}$인 외국산 FCW를 사용하였으나 이를 대체한 $3.2{\Phi}$ 태경 FCW가 국내에서 개발되었다. 하지만 개발된 FCW를 사용하여 제작된 금형의 수명이 부족한 현상이 발생하였다. 이에 금형의 수명을 연장시킬 수 있는 내균열성 및 내열충격성을 확보한 태경 FCW의 개발과 개발된 FCW의 성능평가가 요구되었다. 특히 열간단조 금형에 있어서 중요한 내열충격성의 경우 가열과 냉각의 반복 Cycle에 의한 Thermal shock의 평가가 대부분이며 높은 Cycle로 인해 많은 시간이 걸리며, 또한 가열과 냉각을 오갈 수 있는 고가의 시험장치가 요구된다. 그러므로 개발된 FCW 육성용접부의 내균열성 및 내열충격성을 평가할 수 있는 방법에 대한 연구와 특히 내열충격성을 시간이 적게 걸리면서도 경제적으로 평가할 수 있는 방법에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구의 목적은 열간단조 금형 육성용접부의 내균열성 및 열충격특성을 평가할 수 있는 방법에 대한 검토와 특히 내열충격성에 대해 J.W.Kim등의 시험방법을 참고하여 시간이 적게 걸리면서 저 비용으로 열 충격특성을 평가할 수 있는 시험법을 고안하는 것이다. 이를 위한 방법으로 육성용접부의 내균열성을 평가하기 위한 상온 Bending을 실시하였고, 내열충격성을 평가하기 위한 염욕로를 이용하는 고온 Bending을 고안하여 실시하였다. 상온 Bending, 고온 Bending 모두 3점 굽힘시험을 적용하였다. 고온 Bending의 가열방법으로는 염욕로를 사용하여 시편이 대기중에서 약 $850^{\circ}C$의 온도가 될 수 있도록 하였다. 시편은 각각 열처리를 하여 요구 경도를 확보하였고, 이를 염욕로에서 5분간 가열 및 유지하여 취출 후 굽힘하중을 가하여 변위의 정도로 열충격을 평가하는 방법을 사용하였다. 상온 Bending은 극한변형량과 파단부 극한응력으로, 고온 Bending은 고온 극한변형량으로 평가를 하였고, 외국산 FCW를 사용한 육성용접부를 비교대상으로 하였다. 평가 결과 개발된 국산 $3.2{\Phi}$ 태경 FCW의 성능은 외국산 FCW와 유사하거나 우수한 것으로 평가되었고, 실제 금형을 제작하여 현장에 적용한 결과 금형의 수명이 연장된 것이 나타났다.

The Study on the Long-term Reliability Characteristics by Solar Cell Ribbon Thickness (태양전지 두께에 Ribbon 따른 장기 신뢰성 특성에 관한 연구)

  • 본 논문에서는 태양전지의 Ribbon 두께(A-type:0.2mm, B-type:0.25mm)에 따라 3가지 온도조건 ($-40{\sim}65^{\circ}C$, $-40{\sim}85^{\circ}C$, $-40{\sim}105^{\circ}C$)으로 열충격 시험을 수행하였다. 그 결과, A, B type 별 초기 평균효율은 15.2%로 같았다. 하지만, 열충격 시험(600 Cycle) 후 Condition 1에서 A-type 7.5%, B-type 7.7%, Condition 2에서는 8.6%, 13.2%를 나타내었다. Condition 3에서는 각각 11.6%, 19.9%의 감소율을 나타내었다. 열충격 시험 후 A-type보다 Ribbon두께가 두꺼운 B-type의 효율이 크게 감소하였다. 이는 A, B type 모두 이종재료 접합부의 금속간화합물(IMC)층이 형성되어 전기적 저항이 증대된 것으로 판단된다. 또한, B-type의 I-V 특성 곡선 및 EL을 분석한 결과, p-n층이 파괴되고, 병렬저항이 감소하여, 장기적 신뢰성에서 A-type 보다 더 취약한 것으로 나타났다. 향후 태양전지 Ribbon 형상에 따른 장기 신뢰성 특성에 대해 수치해석 및 시뮬레이션 분석이 수반되어야 할 것이다.

Mechanical Properties of Porous Reaction Bonded Silicon Carbide (반응소결 탄화규소 다공체의 기계적 특성)

  • Porous reaction bonded SiC with high fracture strength was developed using Si melt infiltration method for use of the support layer in high temperature gas filter that is essential to develop the next generation power system such as integrated gasification combined cycle system. The porosity and pore size of porous RBSC developed in this study were in the range of 32∼36% and 37∼90 ${\mu}m$ respectively and the maximum fracture strength of porous RBSC fabricated was 120 MPa. The fracture strength and thermal shock resistance of porous RBSC fabricated by Si melt infiltration were much improved compared to those of commercially available porous clay bonded SiC due to the formation of the strong SiC/Si interface between SiC particles. The characteristics of pore structure of porous RBSC was varied depending on the amounts of residual Si as Well as the size of SiC particle used in green body.

Ag Sintering Die Attach Technology for Wide-bandgap Power Semiconductor Packaging (Wide-bandgap 전력반도체 패키징을 위한 Ag 소결 다이접합 기술)

  • Recently, the shift to next-generation wide-bandgap (WBG) power semiconductor for electric vehicle is accelerated due to the need to improve power conversion efficiency and to overcome the limitation of conventional Si power semiconductor. With the adoption of WBG semiconductor, it is also required that the packaging materials for power modules have high temperature durability. As an alternative to conventional high-temperature Pb-based solder, Ag sintering die attach, which is one of the power module packaging process, is receiving attention. In this study, we will introduce the recent research trends on the Ag sintering die attach process. The effects of sintering parameters on the bonding properties and methodology on the exact physical properties of Ag sintered layer by the realization 3D image are discussed. In addition, trends in thermal shock and power cycle reliability test results for power module are discussed.

Study on Improvement of Mechanical Property, Oxidation and Erosion Resistance of SiC Matrix Ceramic Composites Reinforced by Hybrid Fabric Composed of SiC and Carbon Fiber (탄화규소섬유와 탄소섬유 하이브리드 직물을 강화재로 한 SiC 매트릭스 세라믹복합재의 기계적물성, 산화 및 삭마 저항성 개선 연구)

  • In this study, $C_f/SiC$, $SiC_f/SiC$ and $C_f-SiC_f/SiC$ ceramic composites reinforcing carbon fiber, SiC fiber and hybrid fiber were fabricated by hybrid TGCVI and PIP process. After the thermal shock cycle, 3-point bending and Oxy-Acetylene torch test, their mechanical behavior, oxidation and erosion resistance were evaluated. The $C_f/SiC$ composite showed a decrease in mechanical property along with increasing temperature, a pseudo-ductile fracture mode and a large quantity of erosion. The $SiC_f/SiC$ composite exhibited stronger mechanical property and lower erosion rate compared to the $C_f/SiC$, but brittle fracture mode. On the other hand, hybrid type of $C_f-SiC_f/SiC$ composite gave the best mechanical property, more ductile failure mode than the $SiC_f/SiC$, and lower erosion rate than the $C_f/SiC$. During the Oxy-Acetylene torch test, the $SiO_2$ formed by reaction of the SiC matrix with oxygen prevented further oxidation or erosion of the fibers for $C_f-SiC_f/SiC$ and $SiC_f/SiC$ composites particularly. In conclusion, if a hybrid composite with low porosity is prepared, this material is expected to have high applicability as a high temperature thermo-structural composite under high temperature oxidation atmosphere by improving low mechanical property due to the oxidation of $C_f/SiC$ and brittle fracture mode of $SiC_f/SiC$ composite.
