  • Thermal simulation of typical stack-type and newly proposed planar-type micro-gas sensors were studied by FEM method. the thermal analysis for the proposed planar structure including temperature distribution over the sensing layer and power consumption of the heater were carried using finite element method by computer simulation and well compared with those of typical stack-type micro-gas sensor. The thermal properties of the microsensor from thermal simulation were compared with those of an actual device to investigate the acceptability of the computer simulation.

  • A sensor array (3${\times}$5$\textrm{mm}^2$ in diaphragm dimension) of 12 sensing clements with different operating temperatures was optimized with respect to thermal operation. This sensor array with single heater on a glass diaphragm over back-etched silicon bulk realizes a novel concept of a sensor array: an array of sensor clements operated at different temperatures can yield more information than single measurement. The proposed micro sensor array could provide well-integrated array structure because it had only single heater at the center of the diaphragm and used the various sensing properties of two kinds of metal oxide layers with various operating temperatures.

  • Magnesia partially stabilized zirconia(Mg-PSZ) solid electrolytes for an improvement of thermal shock resistance, which is suitable for the measurement of oxygen activity in a molten steel, were prepared by post-thermal aging treatment. The steelmaking oxygen sensor elements were formed by an injection molding method, sintered at $1650^{\circ}C$, and then thermal aged ranged from 1250 to $1400^{\circ}C$. Sintered density and porosity were decreased as increasing the magnesia content in a zirconia-magnesia solid solution. Fractions of cubic phase to the synthesized Mg-PSZ solid electrolytes were ranged from 13.13 to 79.54.% after post-thermal aging treatment. Very dense microstructure without voids in the grains was obtained by the post-thermal aging process. Fine tetragonal phase crystallites precipitated on the cubic surface during post-thermal aging up to $1300^{\circ}C$ improve a thermal shock resistance and reappearance of electro motive force(EMF) curve.

  • Thermal imaging system is implemented for the measurement and the analysis of the thermal distribution of the target objects. The main Part of the system is thermal camera in which a focal plane array typed sensor is introduced The sensor detects mid-range infrared spectrum or target objects and then it output generic video signal which should be processed to form a thermal image frame. A digital signal processor(DSP) in the system inputs analog to digital converted data. performs algorithms to improve the thermal images and then outputs the corrected frame data to frame buffers for NTSC encoding and for digital outputs.. To enhance the quality of the thermal images, two point correction method is applied. Figures indicate that the corrected thermal images are much improved.

  • One of major errors in flow rate measurement for two-phase flow using an Electrical Capacitance Sensor (ECS) concerns sensor sensitivity under temperature raise. The thermal effect on electrical capacitance sensor (ECS) system for air-water two-phase flow monitoring include sensor sensitivity, capacitance measurements, capacitance change and node potential distribution is reported in this paper. The rules of 12-electrode sensor parameters such as capacitance, capacitance change, and change rate of capacitance and sensitivity map the basis of Air-water two-phase flow permittivity distribution and temperature raise are discussed by ANSYS and MATLAB, which are combined to simulate sensor characteristic. The cross-sectional void fraction as a function of temperature is determined from the scripting capabilities in ANSYS simulation. The results show that the temperature raise had a detrimental effect on the electrodes sensitivity and sensitive domain of electrodes. The FE results are in excellent agreement with an experimental result available in the literature, thus validating the accuracy and reliability of the proposed flow rate measurement system.

  • Space Imaging Sensor operated on LEO is affected from the Earth IR and Albedo as well as the Sun Radiation. The Imaging Sensor exposed to extreme environment needs thermal control subsystem to be maintained in operating/non-operating allowable temperature. Generally, units are periodically dissipated on spacecraft panel, which is designed as radiator. Because thermal design of the imaging sensor inside a spacecraft is isolated, heat pipes connected to radiators on the panel efficiently transfer dissipation of the units. First of all, preliminary thermal design of radiating area and heater power is performed through steady energy balance equation. Based on preliminary thermal design, on-orbit thermal analysis is calculated by SINDA, so calculation for thermal design could be easy and rapid. Radiators are designed to rib-type in order to maintain radiating performance and reduce mass. After on-orbit thermal analysis, thermal requirements for Space Imaging Sensor are verified.

  • A thermal mass air flow sensor, which consists of a micro-heater and thermal sensors on the silicon-nitride thin membrane structure, is micro-fabricated by MEMS processes. Three thermo-resistive sensors, one for the measurement of microheater temperature, the others for the measurement of membrane temperature upstream and downstream of the micro-heater respectively, are used. The micro-heater is operated under the constant temperature difference mode via a real time controller, based on inlet air temperature. Two design models for microfabricated flow sensor are compared with experimental results and confirmed their applicabilities and limitations. The thermal characteristics are measured to find the best flow indicator. It is found that two normalized temperature indicators can be adopted with some advantages in practice. The flow sensor with this control mode can be adopted for wide capability of high speed and sensitivity in the very low and medium velocity ranges.

  • For realizing artificial skin sensing as a final goal, a mono-material pressure-conductive rubber sensor which is also sensitive for temperature is described. Firstly, discimination of the hardness and the thermal property of material using a proposed sensor is presented. Furthermore, a tactile sensor constints of four pressure-conductive rubber sensor to discriminate surface model which imitaties the surface roughness of material is proposed.
