  • Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been used as a tool, not only for imaging surfaces, but also for measuring surface forces and mechanical properties at the nano-scale. Force calibration is crucial for quantitatively measuring the forces that act between the AFM probe of a force sensing cantilever and a sample. In this work, the lateral force calibrations of a V-shaped cantilever were performed using the finite element method, multiple pivot loading, and thermal noise methods. As a result, it was shown that the multiple pivot loading method was appropriate for the lateral force calibration of a V-shaped cantilever. Further, through crosschecking of the abovementioned methods, it was concluded that the thermal noise method could be used for determining the lateral spring constants as long as the lateral deflection sensitivity was accurately determined. To obtain the lateral deflection sensitivity from the sticking portion of the friction loop, the contact stiffness should be taken into account.

  • Using an efficient adjoint variable method, we develop a unified design sensitivity analysis (DSA) method considering both steady state nonlinear heat conduction and geometrical nonlinear elasticity problems. Design sensitivity expressions with respect to thermal conductivity and Young's modulus are derived. Beside the temperature and displacement adjoint equations, another coupled one is defined regarding the obtained adjoint displacement field as the adjoint load in temperature field. The developed DSA method is shown to be very efficient and further extended to a topology design optimization method for the nonlinear weakly coupled thermo-elasticity problems using a density approach.

  • The actual buckling of the railroad track structure is suspected to be a complex interaction between the vertical, lateral and torsional modes. To make the analysis tractable, however, most studies restrict themselves to either the vertical or the horizontal plane. Based on a comprehensive and realistic three-dimensional track model developed in the previous study, three dimensional buckling analysis of CWR track subjected to temperature load was performed. Using the study on buckling temperature and mode, sensitivity of track components such as tie spacing, ballast resistance, stiffness of pad-fastening system and rail size were investigated.

  • A numerical study of premixed combustion within a porous ceramic burner (PCB) is performed to understand flame behavior with respect to various model parameters. Basic flame structure within the porous ceramic burner and species profiles such as NO and CO are examined. Sensitivity analysis of flame speed, gas and solid temperature, NO and CO emission from the burner with respect to reaction steps and various physical properties of the ceramic material is applied to find the most significant parameters in selection of porous materials for the porous ceramic burner. Effects of thermal conductivity, extinction coefficient and scattering albedo on the burner characteristics are studied through the sensitivity analysis. The results of sensitivity study reveal the order of importance in ceramic material properties to get suitable burner performance. Scattering albedo, which governs the ratio of absorbed energy by the ceramic material to total radiative energy transferred, is one of the most important parameters in the material properties since it affects the actual absorbed radiation rate and thus it largely affects the flame structure. Through the study, it is found that the sensitivity study can be used to estimate the flame behavior within the porous ceramic burner more effectively.

  • A thermal-optical transmittance carbon analyzer has been developed to determine particulate organic (OC) and elemental (EC) carbon. Several analysis factors affecting the sensitivity of OC and EC determination were investigated for the carbon analyzer. Although total carbon (TC) is usually consistent in the determination, OC and EC split is sensitive to adopted analysis protocol. In this study the maximum temperature in oxygen-free He in the analysis was examined as a main cause of the uncertainty. Prior to the sensitivity analysis consistency in OC-EC determination of the carbon analyzer and the uniformity of carbonaceous aerosol loading on a sampled filter were checked to be in acceptable range. EC/TC ratios were slightly decreased with increasing the maximum temperature between $550-800^{\circ}C$. For the increase of maximum temperature from $500^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$, the EC/TC ratio was lowered by 4.65-5.61% for TC loading of 13-44 ${\mu}g/cm^2$ with more decrease at higher loading. OC and EC determination was not influenced by trace amount of oxygen in pure He (>99.999%), which is typically used in OC and EC analysis. The facing of sample loaded surface to incident laser beam showed negligible influence in the OC-EC split, but it caused elevated PC fraction in OC for forward facing relative to backward facing.

  • In this study thermal characteristics of heat-responsive element considering conduction, convection and rate of change of element using Response Time Index (RTI) applied to sensitivity test of sprinkler head at home and aborad are theoretically investigated. Analytic solution of temperature distributions with radial direction and time is obtained form energy transport equations, non-homogeneous 2th order partial differential equation, applying to constant wall temperature and symmetric condition in order to analyze thermal characteristics of heat-responsive element for circular cylindrical geometry. Base on the results, the analytic method of this study is fundamental data to practical use for sensitivity test of sprinkler head and design of heat-responsive element.

  • Presence of eyelid on anterior ocular surface and its thermal effects play significant role in maintaining eye temperature. In most of the literatures of thermal modeling in human eye, the eyelid is not considered as an eye component. In this paper, finite element model is developed to investigate the thermal effects of eyelid closure and opening in human eye. Based on different properties and parameter values reported in literatures, the bio-heat transfer process is simulated and compared with experimental results in steady and transient state cases. The sensitivity analysis using various ambient temperatures, evaporation rates, blood temperatures and lens thermal conductivities is carried out. The temperature values so obtained in open eye show a good agreement with past results. The closure of eyelid is found to increase/decrease the eye temperature significantly than its opening, when the parameter values are considered to be at extreme.

  • The north panel of a geostationary satellite is used as one of the main radiators, on which communication equipment or bus equipment are installed. The thermal control of panel is designed by using embedded heat pipes and surface heat pipes (or external heat pipes) to spread out heat dissipated from equipment all over the radiator evenly and finally to reject the heat to the space through the radiator efficiently. This panel is also divided by several areas based on the operating temperature and dissipation of equipment in order to increase heat rejection capability of radiator. The thermal analysis is carried out for the hot case, Winter Solsitce EOL (End Of Life), in order to validate thermal design of the panel utilized 6 surface heat pipes and 8 embedded heat pipes. The sensitivity studies for the heat pipe failure case and no heat pipe case are performed and compared to its normal state. The heat transport capability of heat pipe is also obtained from these calculations.
