  • Triblock copolymers from poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and D,L-lactide or $\varepsilon$-carprolactone were synthesized to prepare semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) with chitosan by U.V. irradiation method. Then, solute permeation through these semi-IPNs hydrogels were investigated. The structures of semi-IPNs were confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy and wide angle X-ray diffractometer (WAXD). Equilibrium water content (EWC) of these hydrogels was in the range of 67-75%. The crystallinity, thermal properties and mechanical properties of semi-IPNs hydrogels were studied. All the hydrogels revealed a remarkable decrease in crystallinity as compared with PEG macromer itself. The tensile strengths of semi-IPNs hydrogels in dry state were rather high, but those of hydrogels in wet state decreased drastically. The permeabilities of solutes of hydrogels followed the swelling behaviors and were regulated by solute size.

  • Ag- and Pd-loaded $SnO_2$ nanowire network sensors were prepared by the growth of $SnO_2$ nanowires via thermal evaporation, the coating of slurry containing $SnO_2$ nanowires, and dropping of a droplet containing Ag or Pd nanoparticles, and subsequent heat treatment. All the pristine, Pd-loaded and Ag-loaded $SnO_2$ nanowire networks showed the selective detection of $C_2H_5OH$ with low cross-responses to CO, $H_2$, $C_3H_8$, and $NH_3$. However, the relative gas responses and gas selectivity depended closely on the catalyst loading. The loading of Pd enhanced the responses($R_a/R_g$: $R_a$: resistance in air, $R_g$: resistance in gas) to CO and $H_2$ significantly, while it slightly deteriorated the response to $C_2H_5OH$. In contrast, a 3.1-fold enhancement was observed in the response to 100 ppm $C_2H_5OH$ by loading of Ag onto $SnO_2$ nanowire networks. The role of Ag catalysts in the highly sensitive and selective detection of $C_2H_5OH$ is discussed.

  • Three new transition metal complexes based on Ozagrel $[Cu(Ozagrel)]_n$ (1), $[Zn(Ozagrel)(Cl)]_n$ (2), ${[Mn_2-(Ozagrel)(1,4-ndc)_2]{\cdot}(H_2O)}_n$ (3), (Ozagrel = 3-(4-((1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl)phenyl)acrylic acid; 1,4-ndc = 1,4-Naphthalenedicarboxylic acid) have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by elemental analyse, IR, TG, PXRD, electrochemical analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. X-ray structure analysis reveals that 1 and 3 are 3D coordination polymers, while complex 2 is a two-dimensional network polymer, the 2D layers are further packed into 3D supramolecular architectures that are connected through hydrogen bonds. The electrochemistry of 1-3 was studied by cyclic voltammetry in methanol and water using a glassy carbon working electrode. Also, thermal decomposition process and powder X-ray diffraction of complexes were investigated.

  • A new 1D oxalato bridged compound Ni(en)(ox)-2$H_2$O, (ox = oxalate; en = ethylenediamine) has been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectrum, TG analysis, and magnetic measurements. In the structure the Ni atoms are coordinated with four oxygen atoms in two oxalate ions and two nitrogen atoms in one ethylenediamine molecule. The oxalate anion acts as a bis-bidentate ligand bridging Ni atoms in cis-configuration. This completes the infinite zigzag neutral chain, [Ni(en)(ox)]. The interchain space is filled by water molecules that link the chains through a network of hydrogen bonds. Thermal variance of the magnetic susceptibility shows a broad maximum around 50 K characteristic of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic coupling. The theoretical fit of the data for T > 20 K led to the nearest neighbor spin interaction J = -43 K and g = 2.25. The rapid decrease in susceptibility below 20 K indicate this compound to be a likely Haldane gap candidate material with S = 1.

  • Sulfonated poly(ether sulfone)s (PESs) with a network structure were prepared by heat-induced crosslinking of the allyl-terminated telechelic sulfone polymers using a bisazide and their structure was analyzed by $^1H$ NMR. Having both uniform distribution of the hydrophilic conductive sites and controlled hydrophobic nature by minimized crosslinking, the crosslinked polymer (PES-60) membrane offered excellent proton conductivity at high temperature with a good thermal stability. In addition, selectivity of the crosslinked membrane (PES-60) was more than three times than that of Nafion$^{(R)}$.

  • Calcium aluminate glasses transmit light at relatively long wavelengths up to 6 ㎛ and exhibit also low Rayleigh scattering values. However they have a tendency to get devitrified easily, which limits their use as routine optical materials. Here, the ternary system CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 glasses with low-silica (<30 mol%) were prepared to prevent the devitrification of CaO-Al2O3 glasses and the properties were investigated as functions of composition. The addition of SiO2 to calcium aluminate glasses promoted their stability, which was due to the decrease of non-bridging oxygens and the reconnection of network. As SiO2 was added, density, refractive index, molar volume of oxygens and thermal expansion coefficient decreased continuously. But the glass transition temperatures with increasing SiO2 contents were raised and then lowered. It was postulated that the anomaly was related to the changes of the middle range order as well as the short range order. As the amount of SiO2 in the glass was increased, the IR cut-off values moved to shorter wavelength owing to 'Si-O' antisymetric stretching vibration. The IR cut-off wavelength of the glasses with 5 and 30 mol% SiO2 was 4.90, 4.55 ㎛, respectively.

  • In recent years there has been considerable interest in the construction of super high-rise buildings. From the prior art, various procedures and devices for surveys during and after the phase of erection of a high-rise building are known. High-rise buildings are subject to strong external tilt effects caused, for instance, by wind pressures, unilateral thermal effects by exposure to sunlight, and unilateral loads. Such effects are a particular challenge in the phase of construction of a high-rise building, in as much as the high-rise building under construction is also subject to tilt effects, and will at least temporarily lose its - as a rule exactly vertical - alignment. Yet construction should progress in such a way that the building is aligned as planned, and particularly so in the vertical, when returning into an un-tilted basic state. It is essential that a straight element be constructed that theoretically, even when moving around its design centre point due to varying loads, would have an exactly vertical alignment when all biasing conditions are neutralised. Because of differential raft settlement, differential concrete shortening, and construction tolerances, this ideal situation will rarely be achieved. This paper describes a procedure developed by the authors using GPS observations combined with a network of precision inclination sensor to provide reliable coordinated points at the top of the worldwide highest-rise building under construction in Dubai.

  • This paper presents a current-balancing circuit for security lights that uses parallel-connected LEDs. The parallel connection of LEDs causes current differences between the LED strings because of characteristic deviations. These differences can reduce the lifespan of a particular point of LEDs by thermal spotting. They can also cause non-uniform luminance of the lighting device. Among the different methods for solving these problems, the method using current-balancing transformers makes it easy to compensate for current differences and it has a simple circuitry. However, while the balancing transformer has been applied to AC light sources, LEDs operate on a DC source, so the driving circuitry and the design method have to be changed and their performances must be verified. Thus in this paper, a design method of the balancing transformer network and the driving circuitry for LEDs is proposed. The proposed design method could have a smaller size than the conventional design method. The proposed circuitry is applied to three types of 100-watt LED security lights, which use different LEDs. Experimental results are presented to verify the performance of the designed driving circuits.

  • This thesis was investigated on ion-induced characteristics in a-$Se_{75}Ge_{25}$ positive and negative resists for focused-ion-beam microlithogaphy. The exposed a-$Se_{75}Ge_{25}$ inorganic thin film shows an increase in optical absorption after exposure to~$10_{16}$ dose of Ga+. The observed shift in the absorption edge toward longer wavelengths is consistent with that in films exposed to band-gap photons(~$10^{21}$photons/cm2). This result may be related with microstructural rearrangements with in the short range of SeGe network. Due to changes in the short range order, the chemical bonding may be affected, which results in increased chemical dissolution in ion-induced film. Also, this resist exhibits good thermal stability because of its high Tg(~$220^{\circ}C$). When focused ion beams are used for direct exposure of resist over a substrate, unwanted implantation of the substrate may be an issue. A possible way to avoid this is to match the thickness of the resist to the range of ions in the resist. Thin aspect is currently under investigation.
