  • Significant air temperature increases in urban areas are known as the heat island phenomenon in a global scale. Therefore, we propose numerical model in order to analyze quantitative effects of building environmental factors on the heat island phenomenon in urban area. In this paper, we propose a predicting model to analyze the heat island phenomenon quantitatively. Using this model, numerical simulation is performed in order to analyze quantitative effects of many factor on the heat island phenomenon.

  • This study aims to improve the thermal comfort level of detached housing area by reducing the impact of thermal environment. The study focused on reducing surface temperature that is generated in buildings and adjacent spaces as a result of sensible heat load and presented a proposal on implementing planting method considering its outdoor condition and structure and composed materials. To perform the study, we utilized 3D-CAD to examine the outdoor condition and structure and composed materials that impact on surface temperature and conducted space design after reflecting climatic elements in simulations. The result is as follows. In reviewing temperature distribution of Heat Island Potential (HIP) of buildings and adjacent spaces, in case where green coverage ratio is increased, there was a $6^{\circ}C$ temperature difference and in regard to changes in the thermal environment in detached housing area, in case where rooftop planting, surface improvement, planting, and overall green coverage ratio is increased, there was a $10^{\circ}C$ temperature difference. In addition, there was difference in temperature in detached housing area following the changes in wind.

  • The land use has changed rapidly since 1960s in accordance with urbanization in Seoul Metropolitan Region. As a result, the urban microclimate has undergone changes as well. This study aims to recognize trend of the urban heat island change which is caused by land use change during urbanization in large city. Thermal data of Landsat TM images in 1987 and 1999 were for land surface temperature change detection in the study.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the characteristic of urban heat island intensity in urban area formed at a basin. Thermal environments for basin-type cities are influenced by significant topographic relief winds. In this study, we analyzed the diurnal variations of the heat island intensity according to meteorological condition and season using AWS(Automatic Weather observation System) data in Daegu Metropolitan area for 1 year(3/April, 2003 $\sim$ 2/April, 2004). In this study, we defined the urban heat island intensity as the air temperature difference between two points, the downtown and the suburban area. The suburban area is located at valley mouth around the western tip of Daegu. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The maximum heat island intensity was recorded at early morning under the meteorological conditions, calm and clear 2. The heat island intensity was strong in the order of winter, fall, spring and summer. 3. The heat island intensity came out minus values in the afternoon. This phenomenon is known as a com mon for basin-type cities. 4. The heat island intensity was twice or more in clear and calm than not so.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of outdoor thermal environment of flat-type apartment houses and tower-type apartment houses in summer by numerical simulation. After inputting a building condition at CAD, we calculated the surface temperature for two apartments by using the numerical simulation of a clear sky day in summer in Seoul. The results indicated that the variation in Heat Island Potential(HIP) of tow apartments were not only in the day but also in the night. According to form of apartment the flat-type apartment houses appeared $1.3^{\circ}C$ more highly tower-type apartment houses.

  • The tree is regarded as an sustainable architectural outdoor design element which reduce urban heat island effect by its solar shading and evapotranspiration. This study carried out field observations of measuring thermal environment of selected tree and its ambience to determine passive cooling effects. Results from the field observations are as below; Tree-shading effect to the thermal environment can not be properly evaluated by merely measuring air temperature differences between tree-shaded space and unshaded space for the maximum temperature difference is less than $1.5^{\circ}C$. The differences of longwave radiation and shortwave radiation between tree-shaded space and unshaded space are measured. Shortwave radiation is considered as a main thermal comfort determining factor for the difference of the shortwave radiation is much bigger than that of longwave radiation. By thermal infrared image analysis, the surface temperature of the tree under strong solar radiation is measured same as ambient air temperature. By which the evapotranspiration is considered to retard tree surface temperature raising effectively.

  • The overall aim of this study is to mitigate urban environmental problems. In particular, to reduce the effects of urban heat island phenomenon which is one of the urban planning perspective. This study focused on the analysis of the relationship between the urban heat island effect and the thermal and wind properties. To do this analysis, water space was virtually made at Yeol_Mae village Apt. Because it is very difficult to set up water space for the existing apartment complexes due to realistic constraints. This study, therefore has a strong sort of guidelines to create water space for newly formed city. It was based on the concept of virtual city through an in-depth analysis on reduction of urban heat island effects for the existing apartment along with creation of water space. To analysis site, Envi-Met Model developed by Michael Bruse was used. The results are as follows. The temperature went from 298.9K to 297.82K and The wind speed went from 1.42m/s to 1.43m/s. The results are slight in this study because creation of water space is planned to a small area of an apartment complex. But if the water space would be applied to a whole city, the mitigation effect of urban heat island would be bigger.

  • We have numerically modeled thermal evolution of Ulleung Island after an emplacement of magma chamber. The disk-shape magma chamber is assumed to locate at 2.9 km beneath the island and has a diameter and a thickness of 10 km and 300 (or 600) m, respectively. The geothermal gradients evaluated from the numerical modeling coincide well with the range of the geotherms (${\sim}95^{\circ}C/km$) observed from the well logging. Although there are limitations in the application of the numerical results directly to the interpretation of the observed geotherms, we believe that an existence of a hot magma chamber in molten or in solidified state is the most plausible explanation for the observed geotherms.

  • In this paper, the three-dimensional stress effect of thermal oxide is simulated. We developed a three-dimensional finite element numerical simulator including three-dimensional adaptive mesh generator that is able to refine and eliminate nearby moving boundary of oxide, and oxidation solver with stress model. To investigate the behavior of thermal oxidation the simulations of thermal oxidation for island and hole structures are carried out assuming silicon wafer of <100> direction, temperature of $1000^{\circ}C$, oxidation time of 60min, wet ambient, initial oxide thickness of $300\AA$, and nitride thickness of $2, 000\AA$. The main effect of deformation at the corner area of oxide is due to distribution of oxidant, but the deformation of oxide is affected by the stressin theoxide. In the island structure which is the structure mostly covered with nitride and a coner is opended to oxidation, oxidation is reduced at the coner by compressive stress. In the hole structure which is the structure mostly opedned to oxide and a coner is convered with nitride, however, oxidation is increased at the coner by tensile stress.

  • As the environment and energy problems such as global climate change (global warming, urban heat island phenomenon) and energy depletion have come to the fore, the construction and waterproofing industry are responding more critically to the demands of global green technology and are employing more eco-friendly technologies as of recent. In this study, the application of the waterproofing material with thermal response performance in construction buildings was investigated to confirm whether the thermal performance is being properly secured by the change of the surface temperature. Experimental results showed that the surface temperature difference between before and after the application is at least 19.8℃ at the maximum 26.3℃. When the degradation rate is converted, the degradation effect of about 40% on average was confirmed.
