The effects of heat treatment and fiber orientation on tensile strength and fatigue behavior were studied in a continuously reinforced. magnesium-based composite Following an earlier TEM investigation, specimens were thermally aged to modified the interfacial zone between the alumina fibers and the magnesium alloy matrix. From the tensile experimental results, the ultimate tensile strength of the aged specimens were lower than that of the as-fabricated due to weak fiber-matrix interfacial strength with chemical reaction during the thermal processing. The fatigue crack growth experiments were conducted with specimens having the fiber orientation normal to the crack growth direction (longitudinal) and also specimens with the fibers oriented parallel to the crack growth direction(transverse). A comparison of the fatigue crack growth behavior indicates that aged longitudinal specimens are more resistant to fatigue crack growth the as-fabricated longitudinal specimens. Conversely, as-fabricated transverse specimens are more resistant to fatigue crack growth than aged transverse specimens.
Thermal fatigue test and stress analysis of Si3N4 and metal swirl chamber were carried out to investigate the reliability of the swirl chambers. Conditions of the thermal fatigue test were severer than those in real engine and FEM was used to analize the stress distribution in the swirl chambers. Fatigue cracks of the maximum length 2.4 mm and deformation were occurred at the corner of the jet in metal swirl chamber but not observed in Si3N4 swirl chamber. Maximum tensile stress in Si3N4 swirl chamber calculated by FEM was 300 MPa.

In this study, an assessment method on creep-fatigue crack initiation and crack growth for a Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel (ASME Grade 91) structure has been developed with an extension of the French RCC-MR A16 procedure. The current A16 guide provides defect assessment procedure for a creep-fatigue crack initiation and crack growth for an austenitic stainless steel, but no guideline is available yet for a Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel which is now widely being adopted for structural materials of future nuclear reactor system as well as ultra super critical (USC) thermal plant. In the present study an assessment method on creep-fatigue crack initiation and crack growth is provided for the FMS (Ferritic-Martensitic Steel) and assessment on the creep-fatigue crack behavior for a structure has been carried out. The assessment results were compared with the observed images from a structural test.

The effect of alpha phase on the fatigue properties of Fe-29%Ni-17%Co low thermal expansion alloy was investigated. Two kinds of alloys (Base alloy and Alpha alloy) were prepared by controlling the minimal alloy composition. Microstructure observation, tensile, high-cycle fatigue, and low-cycle fatigue results were measured in this study. The Base alloy microstructure showed typical austenite ${\gamma}$ phase. Alpha alloy represented the dispersed phase in the austenite ${\gamma}$ matrix. As a result of tensile testing, Alpha alloy was found to have higher strengths (Y.S. & T.S.) and lower elongation compared to those of the Base alloy. High cycle fatigue results showed that Alpha alloy had a higher fatigue limit (360MPa) than that (330MPa) of the Base alloy. The Alpha alloy exhibited the superior high cycle fatigue property in all of the fatigue stress conditions. SEM fractography results showed that the alpha phase could act to effectively retard both fatigue crack initiation and crack propagation. In the case of low-cycle fatigue, the Base alloy had longer fatigue life in the high plastic strain amplitude region and the Alpha alloy showed better fatigue property only in the low plastic strain amplitude region. The fatigue deformation behavior of the Fe-29%Ni-17%Co alloy was also discussed as related with its microstructure.
In a primary reactor cooling system(RCS), a dissimilar weld zone exists between cast stainless steel(CF8M) in a pipe and low-alloy steel(SA508 cl.3) in a nozzle. Thermal aging is observed in CF8M as the RCS is exposed for a long period of time to a reactor operating temperature between 290 and $330^{\circ}C$, while no effect is observed in SA508 cl.3. The specimens are prepared by an artificially accelerated aging technique maintained for 300, 1800 and 3600 hrs at $430^{\circ}C$, respectively. The specimens for elastic-plastic fracture toughness tests are prepared one type, which notch is created in the heat affected zone(HAZ) of CF8M. And, the specimens for fatigue crack growth tests are prepared in three classes, which notches are created at the center of deposited zone, the HAZ of CF8M, and the HAZ of SA508 cl.3. From the experiments, the J-integral values with the increase of aging time decrease, and the differences of the fatigue crack growth behaviors are relatively small in the three classes specimens.
A liquid metal reactor (LMR) operated at high temperatures is subjected to both cyclic mechanical loading and thermal loading; thus, creep-fatigue is a major concern to be addressed with regard to maintaining structural integrity. The Korea Advanced Liquid Metal Reactor (KALIMER), which has a normal operating temperature of $545^{\circ}C$ and a total service life time of 60 years, is composed of various cylindrical structures, such as the reactor vessel and the reactor baffle. This study focuses on the creepfatigue crack initiation for a cylindrical Y-junction structure made of 316 stainless steel (SS), which is subjected to cyclic axial tensile loading and thermal loading at a high-temperature hold time of $545^{\circ}C$. The evaluation of the considered creep-fatigue crack initiation was carried out utilizing the ${\sigma}_d$ approach of the RCC-MR A16 guide, which is the high-temperature defect assessment procedure. This procedure is based on the total accumulated strain during the service time. To confirm the evaluated result, a high-temperature creep-fatigue structural test was performed. The test model had a circumferential through wall defect at the center of the model. The defect front of the test model was investigated after the $100^{th}$ cycle of the testing by utilizing a metallurgical inspection technique with an optical microscope, after which the test result was compared with the evaluation result. This study shows how creep-fatigue crack initiation for a high-temperature structure can be predicted with conservatism per the RCC-MR A16 guide.

9-12% Cr steels have been used in thermal power plants which repeat start and stop operations. Major factors of fatigue life are temperature, frequency, stress ratio, holding time, microstructure, and environment. Normally, fatigue life decreases at high temperature, low frequency, high stress ratio, and long holding time conditions. A Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel, called G91, was developed at ORNL (Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA) and was adopted as a high-temperature structural material in the ASME Code in 2004. However, its low-cycle fatigue and fatigue crack growth characteristics have been rarely studied. In this work, we have investigated the low-cycle fatigue crack growth behaviors of G91 steel under various test conditions in terms of temperature and stress ratio. As temperature and stress ratio increase, the crack growth rate becomes faster and striation distance also increases. On the other hand, the number of branch cracks decreases.

In the nuclear power plant, early detection of fatigue crack by non-destructive test (NDT) equipment due to the thermal cyclic load is very important in terms of strict safety regulation. To this end, many efforts are exerted to the fabrication of artificial cracked specimen for practicing engineers in the NDT company. The crack of this kind, however, cannot be made by conventional machining, but should be made under thermal cyclic load that is close to the in-situ condition, which takes tremendous time due to the repetition. In this study, thermal loading condition is investigated to minimize the time for fabricating the cracked specimen using simulation technique which predicts the crack initiation and propagation behavior. Simulation and experiment are conducted under an initial assumed condition for validation purpose. A number of simulations are conducted next under a variety of heating and cooling conditions, from which the best solution to achieve minimum time for crack with wanted size is found. In the simulation, general purpose software ANSYS is used for the stress analysis, MATLAB is used to compute crack initiation life, and ZENCRACK, which is special purpose software for crack growth prediction, is used to compute crack propagation life. As a result of the study, the time for the crack to reach the size of 1mm is predicted from the 418 hours at the initial condition to the 319 hours at the optimum condition, which is about 24% reduction.
Thermal fatigue strength of the solder joints is the most critical issue for TSOP(Thin Small Outline Package) because the leads of this package are extremely short and thermal deformation cannot be absorbed by the deflection of the lead. And the TSOP body can be subject to early fatigue failures in thermal cycle environments. This paper was discussed distribution of thermal stresses at near the joint between silicon chip and die pad and investigated their reliability of solder joints of TSOP with 42 alloy clad lead frame on printed circuit board through FEM and 3 different thermal cycling tests. It has been found that the stress concentration around the encapsulated edge structure for internal crack between the silicon chip and Cu alloy die pad. And using 42 alloy clad, The reliability of TSOP body was improved. In case of using 42 alloy clad die pad(t=0.03mm). $$\sigma$_{VMmax}$ is 69Mpa. It is showed that 15% improvement of the strength in the TSOP body in comparison with using Cu alloy die pad $($\sigma$_{VMmax}$=81MPa). In solder joint of TSOP, the maximum equivalent plastic strain and Von Mises stress concentrate on the heel of solder fillet and crack was initiated in it's region and propagated through the interface between lead and solder. Finally, the modified Manson-Coffin equation and relationship of the ratio of $N_{f}$ to nest(η) and cumulative fracture probability(f) with respect to the deviations of the 50% fracture probability life $(N_{f 50%})$ were achieved.
The increase in high speed, multi-function and high I/O pin semiconductor devices highly demands high pin count, very thin, and high density packages. BGA is one of the solutions, but the package has demerits in package reliability, surface mounting problems due to the PCB warpage and solder joint crack related with TCE mismatch between the materials. On this study to verify the thermal fatigue lifetime of the solder joint FEM and experiments were performed after surface mounting BGA with different solder composition and reliability conditions. FEM showed optimum composition of Ag3.2-Sn96.5 and under the composition minimum creep deformation of the solder joint was calculated, and the thermal fatigue lifetime was improved. In view of temperature cycle condition, the conditions of $-65^{\circ}C$to $150^{\circ}C$ showed minimum lifetime and t was 1/3 of $0^{\circ}C$ to $125^{\circ}C$ condition. Test board was prepared and solder joint crack was verified. Until 1000cycle on soder joint crack was observed.
