  • Demand for essential resources including water, energy and food is rapidly increasing due to climate change, population growth and urbanization. To solve this problem, the concept of water-energy-food nexus has been introduced, and many countries have been trying to acquire the Nexus technology that can maximize the efficiency by analyzing the interconnection between resources. In this regard, this study attempted to estimate the probable maximum water thermal energy in the dam based on the water-energy nexus concept. The estimation of the probable maximum water thermal energy was implemented to monthly water storage of the largest dams in the four major river systems. As a result of analyzing the estimated monthly water thermal energy from 2000 to 2016, Soyang River dam has the largest probable maximum water thermal energy, and Sumjin River dam has the smallest. However, the probable maximum water thermal energy was small in common between March and April, between September and October due to the small temperature difference between the ambient air and the dam water. Also, according to the characteristics of the dam, Daecheong dam and Soyang River dam were beneficial for supplying water thermal energy for heating, and Sumjin River dam and Andong dam were advantageous for supplying water thermal energy for cooling. Our findings can be useful to realize the water-energy-food nexus by increasing the utilization and value of water resources as well as expanding the roles and functions of dams as a starting point to use dam water thermal energy.

  • Air-conditioning system by ocean thermal energy has been developed in the areas of Europe, North America and Japan because there are abundant amount of thermal energy potential in the ocean and permanent free use for the thermal energy using the air-conditioning system. In the case of domestic ocean thermal energy resource, ocean thermal energy potential exists about 27,155Tcal/year and totally 20,285Tcal/year of possible thermal energy use by heat pump, which are reported from the survey of the 7 domestic near shore cities. Present study is aimed to survey the current development status of domestic and overseas air-conditioning system by ocean thermal energy, especially, for the air-conditioning facility technologies using sea water.

  • Globally there is an increasing need to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and increase the use of renewable sources of energy. The storage of solar thermal energy is a crucial aspect for implementing the solar energy for space heating in high latitudes, where solar insolation is high in summer and almost negligible in winter when the domestic heating demand is high. To use the solar heating during winter thermal energy storage is required. In this paper, equations representing the single U-tube heat exchanger are implemented in weak form edge elements in COMSOL Multiphysics(R) to speed up the calculation process for modelling of a borehole storage layout. Multiple borehole seasonal solar thermal energy storage scenarios are successfully simulated. After 5 years of operation, the most efficient simulated borehole pattern containing 168 borehole heat exchangers recovers 69% of the stored seasonal thermal energy and provides 971 MWh of thermal energy for heating in winter.

  • PV/Thennal combined system is a solar energy device that uses photovoltaic module as thermal absorption plate, producing thermal energy as well as electricity which can be utilized in buildings. The system removes heat from PV module through air or liquid and its efficiency will vary dependant on the thermal medium. The heat as the forms of hot air or hot water can be utilized for building use, like space heating and hot water. A significant amount of research and development on hybrid PV/thermal(PVT) collectors has been carried out. This study reviews literature on the research of air-based hybrid PVT collectors in terms of their design and energy performance.

  • Usually, a window tends to have a lower thermal performance, than that of an ordinary wall. This study analyzes the enhancement of thermal performance of a window, when a Thermal Insulation Shutter is installed. The analyses were conducted at the laboratory, and with a full-scale mockup house, and the U-factor and heating load were examined. The laboratory results show that the U-factor increased by approximately 28%, when a Thermal Insulation Shutter was installed. The temperature difference was about $5^{\circ}C$, and this shows that the Thermal Insulation Shutter enhances the thermal performance of the window, when installed. The mockup house was used to calculate the heating load; the heating load was reduced by more than 41%, and shows that the installation of a Thermal Insulation Shutter is an effective way to reduce heating energy consumption.

  • This paper focuses on the heat gain of a lighting system, one of the most-used appliances in buildings, and its thermal effect within a low energy building. In this study, a dynamic thermal model of a lighting system is first established based on the first principle of thermodynamics. Then, thermal parameters of this model are estimated by experiments and an optimization process. Afterward, the obtained model of the system is validated by comparing simulation results to experimental one. Finally it is integrated into a low energy building model in order to quantify its thermal influence within a low energy building. As a result, heat flux of the lighting system, indoor temperature and heating energy demands of the building are obtained and compared with the results obtained by the conventional model of a lighting system. This paper helps to understand thermal dynamics of a lighting system and to further apply lighting systems for energy management of low energy buildings.

  • A novel steel-pipe energy pile is introduced, in which the deformed rebars for main reinforcing are replaced with steel pipes in a large diameter cast-in-place energy pile. Here, the steel pipes act as not only reinforcements but also heat exchangers by circulating the working fluid through the hollow hole in the steel pipes. Under this concept, the steel-pipe energy pile can serve a role of supporting main structures and exchanging heat with surrounding mediums without installing additional heat exchange pipes. In this study, the steel-pipe energy pile was constructed in a test bed considering the material properties of steel pipes and the subsoil investigation. Then, the thermal performance test (TPT) in cooling condition was conducted in the constructed energy pile to investigate thermal performance. In addition, the thermal performance of the steel-pipe energy pile was compared with that of the conventional large diameter cast-in-place energy pile to evaluate its applicability. As a result, the steel-pipe energy pile showed 11% higher thermal performance than the conventional energy pile along with much simpler construction processes.
