Al film(135.5 nm thick) with Pd film(39.6 nm thick) on the top of it was made by thermal evaporation method. Electrical resistance change due to hydrogen absorption and desorption was measured by four point measurement method. The sample was activated by hydrogen absorption and desorption cycling at room temp. Hydrogen was introduced into the film by increasing hydrogen gas pressure step by step up to 640 torr at room temp. The resistance change ratio was decreased to 12 % with increasing hydrogen pressure in contrast to normal metal behavior. This strange tendency was not understood yet. Further study is needed to find out the mechanism of hydrogen absorption in Al in Al/Pd film.
Although the reversibility of 10,12-pentacosadiynoic amino meta-acid(PCDA-mBzA) against temperature and pH was reported, the modulation of reversibility by ion adsorption at terminal functional group has not been investigated. In this work, we developed a simple method for modulating the reversibility of PCDA-mBzA films upon a thermal stimulus by cadmium ion adsorption inducing the breakage of the outer hydrogen bonding of two hydrogen bonds, which are responsible for the reversible properties of PCDA-mBzA. External reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ER-FTIR) analyses revealed that the hydrogen bonding between the carboxylic acid groups was broken through ion adsorption and only a single hydrogen bond between the amide groups remained in the PCDA-mBzA polymer. In addition, PCDA-mBzA films could recover their original property through cadmium ion desorption. These results present that the transition between reversibility and irreversibility can be modulated artificially simply through the adsorption and desorption of metal ions.
A thermal vapor deposition method for crystallization of insoluble analytes with matrix is established as a new sample preparation method for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). A mixture of mono, bis and tris(p-ethyl benzylidene) sorbitols was incorporated into microcrystals of ferulic acid, which was confirmed by confocal micrographs. Molecular masses of sorbitol derivatives were determined in this way by MALDI-MS without thermal decomposition.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate a method for the measurement of N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) and to apply the method to the ambient air samples. For the determination of DMF together with other general VOCs (e.g., benzene, toluene, and xylenes), adsorption sampling and thermal desorption with GC/MS was used in this study. The sampling and analytical approaches tested in this study showed a good repeatability and linearity with lower detection limits of less than 0.35 ppb. Field measurements were carried out at three industrial sites (Daegu-Seongseo, Siwha and Banwall industrial complexes) and one residential site in Daegu city during a period from October 2006 to November 2008. DMF was detected in 71.8% of the total samples from the Seongseo industrial complex, well known for textile industry. In contrast, DMF was detected in only 20.4% and 12.9% of all the samples from the other two sites in Banwall and Siwha industrial complexes, respectively. This implies that sources of DMF should be strongly associated with textile industry. The mean concentration of DMF also appeared to be the highest in Seongseo site (5.95 ppb), followed by a residential site in Daegu (3.28 ppb), Banwall (0.88 ppb) and Siwha (0.55 ppb). In this study, we demonstrated the environmental significance of DMF in urban ambient air. To our knowledge, the DMF measurement introduced in this paper is the first case of an official report in Korea.
The Soil Health Index (SHI) developed by Park et al. (2021) is used to evaluate soil health on remediated soils collected from several remediation project sites and monitored the changes of SHI during the remediation process of land farming, soil washing, and thermal desorption. In the case of land farming, the soils remediated below a legal standard didn't show any significant changes in indices of SHI except the downgrade of available phosphate from medium to a low level. The SHI scores were ranged from 52 to 56 in the contaminated soil and 54 to 57 in the remediated soil. With soil washing, bulk density changed from high to a low level, and available phosphate was lowered from medium to low level. As the SHI scores were evaluated as 58 to 63 for contaminated soil and 38 to 42 for remediated soils. For thermal desorption, soil respiration rate was reduced from high to low level and SHI was scored as 50 to 51 for contaminated soils and 43 to 47 for remediated soils. Even though any abrupt changes of the SHI in remediated soils were not identified in the soils used in this study, it is expected that soil in different conditions such as types and concentrations of contaminant and soil characteristics would result in distinguished changes of the SHI. There is a room for more studies collect diverse information on SHI across the country.
This study examined the possibility of reutilization of soil reclaimed from contaminated sites after completing remediation. The current status of soil remediation methods in Korea was reviewed and physicochemical properties of soil before and after remediation processes were examined to access the recycling possibility of reclaimed soils based on Recycling Aggregate Quality Standard. The most commonly practiced soil remediation techniques are soil washing, land farming, and thermal desorption. These techniques tend to deteriorate various soil properties including electrical conductivity(EC), organic matter content(OM), available P2O5, and cation exchange capacity(CEC). Evaluation of the properties of soil retrieved after each remediation process indicated soil washing may yield the most suitable soil for use as a filling, covering, back-filling, road pavement, and blocking materials, In addition, the soils reclaimed from land farming and thermal desorption have potential utility as a filling, covering and road pavement materials.
Activated carbon fiber (ACF) was surface modified by nitric acid to improve the adsorption efficiency of the propylamine. The adsorption amount of propylamine of the modified ACF increased $17\%$ more than that of as-received ACF. Desorption of propylamine from the propylamine saturated ACF was occurred in two steps, the first step started arround $50^{\circ}C$ showing the desorption of physically adsorbed propylamine and the second step started at $200^{\circ}C$ showing the decomposition of chemically adsorbed propylamine. Total desorption amount of propylamine from the modified ACF was larger than that of the as-received ACF because of increased functional groups. The oxygen and nitrogen contents on the modified ACF increased by 1.5 and 3 times compared with the as-received ACF. A part of propylamine adsorbed on ACF formed pyridine-like or pyrrolic structures with 2 carbons exposed on the surface of the ACF. It was found that propylamine reacted with strong or weak acidic functional groups such as -COOH or -OH existed on ACF surface.
Thermal hydrogenation of phenylacetylene (PA, $C_8H_6$) to styrene ($C_8H_8$) on pre-$C_xH_y$- and C-covered Cu(111) single crystal substrates has been studied using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) mass spectrometry. Chemisorbed PA with an acetylene group has been proved to be associated with hydrogen of pre-adsorbed $C_xH_y$ to form styrene (104 amu) on Cu surface. For the parent (PA) mass (102 amu) TPD profile, the TPD peaks at 360 K and 410 K are assigned to chemisorbed vertically aligned PA and flat-lying cross-bridged PA, respectively (J. Phys. Chem. C 2007, 111, 5101). The relative $I_{360K}/I_{410K}$ TPD ratio dramatically increases with increasing pre-adsorbed $C_xH_y$ before dosing PA, while the ratio does not increase for pre-C-covered surface. For PA on pre-$C_xH_y$-covered Cu(111) surface, styrene desorption is enhanced relative to the parent PA desorption, while styrene formation is dramatically quenched on pre-C-covered (lack of adsorbed hydrogen nearby) surface. It appears that only cross-bridged PA associates with adsorbed hydrogen to form styrene that promptly desorbs at 410 K, while vertically aligned PA is less likely to participate in forming styrene.
