  • Recently, a new $Y_2O_3$ coating deposited using the EB-PVD method has been developed for erosion resistant applications in fluorocarbon plasma environments. In this study, surface crack formation in the $Y_2O_3$ coating has been analyzed in terms of residual stress and elastic modulus. The coating, deposited on silicon substrate at temperatures higher than $600^{\circ}C$, showed itself to be sound, without surface cracks. When the residual stress of the coating was measured using the Stoney formula, it was found to be considerably lower than the value calculated using the elastic modulus and thermal expansion coefficient of bulk $Y_2O_3$. In addition, amorphous $SiO_2$ and crystalline $Al_2O_3$ coatings were similarly prepared and their residual stresses were compared to the calculated values. From nano-indentation measurement, the elastic modulus of the $Y_2O_3$ coating in the direction parallel to the coating surface was found to be lower than that in the normal direction. The lower modulus in the parallel direction was confirmed independently using the load-deflection curves of a micro-cantilever made of $Y_2O_3$ coating and from the average residual stress-temperature curve of the coated sample. The elastic modulus in these experiments was around 33 ~ 35 GPa, which is much lower than that of a sintered bulk sample. Thus, this low elastic modulus, which may come from the columnar feather-like structure of the coating, contributed to decreasing the average residual tensile stress. Finally, in terms of toughness and thermal cycling stability, the implications of the lowered elastic modulus are discussed.

  • In this study, a fire test was conducted to evaluate the fire performance of precast concrete (PC) slabs in an outdoor environment in response to the increase in fire incidents caused by the growth of warehouses. Prior to the field fire test, the tensile yield strength of the tendon at elevated temperatures was tested to analyze the mechanical properties. Also, by referring to previous studies, the thermal properties of tendon and the mechanical and thermal properties of concrete were investigated. A field fire test was conducted to analyze the structural and fire performance of two identical slabs with 50 and 150 mm bearing length. As the bearing length increased, deflection and horizontal displacement decreased. The fire test lasted for 200 minutes without the collapse of slabs, validating current codes. Based on the structural performance which maintained even with concrete spalling and rupture of some tendons, the bonded method is assumed to be practical in pre-tensioned PC slabs. The results of fire test are expected to be utilized in evaluating the fire performance of PC slabs in warehouses.

  • The LCD frame is an important part which supports the BLU of medium/large sized TFT-LCD. To produce it efficiently, it is necessary to achieve the molding process improvement from 1 cavity to 2 cavity system. Because 2 cavity mold is compact and its hot-runner zone is broadened, it is difficult to control the temperature on the mold. In this study, injection molding analysis on the frame in 2 cavity process with FEA(Finite Element Analysis) software is carried out to estimate its quality. The calculated injection molding pressures and maximum deflection in 1 and 2 cavity processes are 41.13 MPa and 1.62 mm, 40.49 MPa and 1.66 mm respectively. The measured maximum flexure load and surface roughness of the left and right frame of 2 cavities are 209 N and 0.08 ${\mu}m$, 193 N and 0.10 ${\mu}m$ while those in 1 cavity are 140 N and 0.13 ${\mu}m$. Thermal image shows that the maximum standard deviation of the temperature on left and right side of 2 cavity mold is $1.23^{\circ}C$. The simulation and measurement results show that the quality of the frame in 2 cavity injection molding process as a whole is not worse than that of 1 cavity system. But maximum flexure loads of the frame in 2 cavity process are far greater than that in 1 cavity process.

  • A large composite spar was manufactured using an automatic fiber placement (AFP) machine. To verify its structural performance, the weakest part of the structure, which is called 'corner radius', was tested under bending and examined by finite element analysis. Since the application of AFP machine to composite structure fabrication is still in early stage in Korea, this paper presents the summary of whole process for manufacturing composite spar using AFP machine from mandrel design and analysis to verification test. The deflection and stress by mandrel weight and AFP machine force, thermal deformation and natural frequency were all examined for mandrel design. The target structure was composite C-spar and cured in an autoclave. Test results were compared with nonlinear finite element analysis results to show that the structure has the strength close to the theoretical value. It was confirmed that the corner radius of the spar manufactured by AFP process showed deviation less than 20% compared with first ply failure strength. The results indicate that the AFP technology could be used for large scale composite structure production in the near future.

  • The effect of h-BN content on microstructure, mechanical properties, and machinability of AlN-BN based machinable ceramics were investigated. The relative density of sintered compact decreased with increasing h-BN content. The four-point flexural strength also decreased from 238 MPa of monolith up to 182 MPa by the addition of 30 vol% h-BN. Both low Young's modulus and residual tensile stress, formed by the thermal expansion coefficient difference between AIN and h-BN, might cause the strength drop in AlN-BN composite. The crack deflection, and pull-out phenomena increased by the plate-like h-BN. However, the fracture toughness decreased with h-BN content. The second phases, consisted of YAG and ${\gamma}$-Al$_2$O$_3$, were formed by the reaction between Al$_2$O$_3$ and Y$_2$O$_3$. During end-milling process, feed and thrust forces measured for AlN-(10~30) vol% BN composites decreased with increasing h-BN particles, showing excellent machinability. Also, irrespective of h-BN content, relatively good surfaces with roughness less than 0.5 m (Ra) could be achieved within short lapping time.

  • Phenolic resin has excellent heat resistance and good mechanical properties as a thermosetting resin. However, its thermosetting characteristics cause it to produce a non-recyclable waste in the form of sprue and runner which is discarded and represents up to 15~20% of the overall products. Forty thousand tons of phenolic resin sprue and runner are disposed of (annually). The (annual) cost of such domestic waste disposal is calculated to be 20 billion won. In this study, discarded phenol resin scraps were pulverized and treated by silanes to improve their interfacial adhesion with HDPE. The sizes of the pulverized pulverulent bodies and fine particles were (100um~1000um) and (1~100um), respectively. The pulverized phenol resin was treated with 3-(methacryloyloxy) propyltrimethoxysilane and vinyltrimethoxy silane and the changes in its characteristics were evaluated. The thermal properties were evaluated by DSC and HDT. The mechanical properties were assessed by a notched Izod impact strength tester. When the silane treated phenol resin was added, the heat distortion temperature of HDPE increased from $77^{\circ}C$ to $96^{\circ}C$ and its crystallinity and crystallization temperature also increased. Finally, its impact strength and tensile strength increased by 20% and 50%, respectively, in comparison with the non-treated phenol resin.

  • An end-line flame arrester allows free venting in combination with flame protection for vertical vent applications. End-line flame arresters are employed in various fields, especially in shipping. In flame arresters, springs are essential parts because the spring load and the spring's elasticity determine the hood opening moment. In addition, the spring has to work under a high-temperature condition because of the burning gas flame. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the mechanical load and elasticity of the spring when the flame starts to appear. Based on simulations of the working process of a specific end-line flame arrester, a thermal and structural analysis of the spring is performed. A three-dimensional model of a burned spring is built using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Results of the CFD analysis are input into a finite element method simulation to analyze the spring structure. The research team focused on three cases of spring loads: 43, 93, and 56 kg, correspondingly, at 150 mm of spring deflection. Consequently, the spring load was reduced by 10 kg after 5 min under a $1,000^{\circ}C$ heat condition. The simulation results can be used to predict and estimate the spring's load and elasticity at the burning time variation. Moreover, the obtained outcome can provide the industry with references to optimize the design of the spring as well as that of the flame arrester.
