It is generally known that high strength soil is indicative of well-graded particle size distribution. However, there are some special cases of firm ground despite poor grade distribution, especially a specific gap-graded soil. Based on these discoveries, this study investigated the development of an additive of gap-graded soils designed to increase soil strength. This theoretical concept was used to calculate the mixed ratio required for optimal soil strength of the ground sample. The gap-graded aggregate was added according to Plato's polyhedral theory and subsequently calculated ratio and soil strength characteristics were then compared to characteristics of the original soil sample through various test results. In addition, the underground stress transfer rate was measured according to the test conditions. The test results showed that the ground settlement and stress limit thickness were reduced with the incorporation of gap-graded soil. Further field tests would confirm the reproducibility and reliability of the technology by using gap-graded soil to reinforce soft ground of a new construction site. Gap-graded soil has the potential to reduce the construction cost and time of construction compared to other reinforcing methods.
From extensive measurements of the resistance and the dynamic resistance as functions of magnetic field and temperature, we find that the transport in the insulating state beyond the superconductor-insulator (S-I) transition is dominated by bosons(Cooper pairs and/or vortices) and cannot be described by the theory of the fermionic insulating phase. The maximum of the magnetoresistance at B = B$_m$ and the following negative slope in R(B) with increasing field can be explained by the crossover from the "Bose-glass" to the "Fermi-glass" phase as suggested by Paalanen, Hebard, and Ruel. The zero bias peak in dv/dl for biases below the characteristic voltage V$_c$ (or current $I_c$), gives a clue for the assumption of the "dirty boson" model which states that the insulating state above the critical magnetic field is the phase where Cooper pairs are localized due to the Coulomb blockade with a nonvanishing order parameter. The shift to a lower value of the critical magnetic field by overlaying thin Au layer, which is known as a strong spin-orbit scatterer, also supports the bosonic nature of the S-I transition.
Vertical reinforcement of soft ground using granular column is a very effective ground improvement technique which is being used fur increasing bearing capacity and decreasing settlement. In this study, the theories of elasticity and plasticity including the upper bound theorem of limit analysis were used to derive the equations for obtaining elastic properties and shear strength parameter of equivalent ground of composite foundation. The developed equations were verified using the finite element computer program, SAGE CRISP. For validation, finite element analyses were conducted f3r the various different cases including different type of soil and replacement ratios. The results of the analysis show that the proposed equation could determine the properties of equivalent ground material for practical application effectively.
The wind-blown sand effect on the high-speed train is investigated. Unsteady RANS equation and the SST k-ω turbulent model coupled with the discrete phase model (DPM) are utilized to simulate the two-phase of air-sand. Sand impact force is calculated based on the Hertzian impact theory. The different cases, including various wind velocity, train speed, sand particle diameter, were simulated. The train's flow field characteristics and the sand impact force were analyzed. The results show that the sand environment makes the pressure increase under different wind velocity and train speed situations. Sand impact force increases with the increasing train speed and sand particle diameter under the same particle mass flow rate. The train aerodynamic force connected with sand impact force when the train running in the wind-sand environment were compared with the aerodynamic force when the train running in the pure wind environment. The results show that the head car longitudinal force increase with wind speed increasing. When the crosswind speed is larger than 35m/s, the effect of the wind- sand environment on the train increases obviously. The longitudinal force of head car increases 23% and lateral force of tail increases 12% comparing to the pure wind environment. The sand concentration in air is the most important factor which influences the sand impact force on the train.

The removal of sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) by activated carbon was investigated by using granular activated carbon (GAC) tests and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. The GAC absorption tests show the removal efficiency of 68.4~90.7% and 99.0~99.9% in 1 and 24 hours, respectively. In both GAC tests, the removal efficiency of sulfamethazine (SMZ) was the highest followed by those of sulfathiazole (STZ) and sulfamethoxazole (SMTZ): SMZ > STZ > SMTZ. In DFT adsorption simulations, we found that the 4-aminobenzenesulfonamide parts of SMZ and STZ and the 3-methyl-1,2-oxazol-5-amine part of SMTZ are preferentially adsorbed on the edges of graphene model, provided that the adsorbates keep their structures without dissociation upon adsorption process. The adsorption energies of SMZ, STZ, and SMTZ are -4.91, -4.64, and -4.62 eV, respectively. This adsorption strength (SMZ > STZ > STMZ) agrees with the trend of the removal efficiency of SAs by GAC. In addition, dissociative adsorption configurations of SAs are discussed.
Surface damage due to subsidence is an inevitable consequence of underground mining, which may be immediate or delayed for many years. The surface damage due to abandoned underground mine is observed to be two subsidence types such as simple sinkhole or trough formation to a large scale sliding of the ground from with in the subsided area. An evaluation of the risk of a subsidence occurrence is vital in the areas affected by mining subsidence. For a subsidence prediction or a risk evaluation, there has been used various methods using empirical models, profile functions, influence functions and numerical models. In this study, a simple but efficient evaluation method of subsidence hazard is suggested, which is based on a diffusion theory and uses just information about geometry of caving and topography. The diffusion model has an analogous relationship with granular model which can explain a mechanism of subsidence. The diffusion model is applied for the evaluation of subsidence hazard in abandoned metal and coal mines. The model is found to be a simple but efficient tool because it needs information of geometry of caving and gangway and the topography.

In this study, wall to bed heat transfer and hydrodynamic characteristics in a conical fluidized bed combustor was investigated using computational fluid dynamics method. A two-fluid Eulerian-Eulerian model was used with applying the kinetic theory for granular flow(KTGF). The effects of the two drag models, Gidaspow and the Syamlal-O'Brien model, different inlet velocities($1.4U_{mf}{\sim}4U_{mf}$) and different particle sizes on the hydrodynamics and heat transfer were studied. The results showed that the hydrodynamic characteristics such as bed expansion ratio and pressure drop were not affected significantly by the drag models. But the heat transfer coefficient was different for the two drag models, especially at lower gas inlet velocities and small particle sizes.
With HTTP/1.0, a single request means a single HTTP connection so that the granular unit of dispatching is the same as real load. But with persistent HTTP connection, multiple requests may arrive on a single TCP connection. Therefore, a scheme that dispatches load at the granularity of individual requests constrains the feasible dispatching policies In this paper we propose a new connection dispatching polity for supporting HTTP/1.1 persistent connections in cluster-based Web servers. When the request of a base html file arrives, the dispatcher gets the subsequent load arriving on that connection using the embedded objects information. After the dispatcher stores the load information in Load Table, the dispatcher employs the connection aging strategy on live persistent connections on the passage of time. The results of simulation show about $1.7\%\~16.8\%$ improved average response time compared to existing WLC algorithm.

Hydraulic uplift which is caused by the action of pore water pressure can be occurred in clay underlain by granular soil during conducting narrow excavation. Estimation of hydraulic uplift is done by considering soil beam. In order to execute more precise estimation of hydraulic uplift, determination of stress distribution in soil beam is necessary. This study presents stress distribution and displacement distribution in the soil beam based on the theory of elasticity. Stress distribution developed in the soil beam by self weight was derived using stress function depicted by $5^{th}$ order of polynomial and it was seen that vertical stresses along the depth of the soil beam show parabolic distribution and those directions be downward. Regarding soil beam which has the weight of $16kN/m^3, thickness and depth are 1m respectively, maximum vertical stress was about 1.7kPa. Stress distribution by the aciton of pore water pressure was derived via superposition of the stresses corresponding to the self weight and it can be seen that vertical compressive stresses act along the depth of the soil beam when the magnitude of pore water pressure equal to 5 times of the self weight is considered. Equations for prediction of the displacements in the soil beam are also presented.

Crib wall system is one of segmental crib type wall. Crib walls are constructed from separate members with no bonds between them other than frictional. The wall units are divide into two main types termed headers and stretchers. The headers run from the front to the back of the wall, perpendicular to the wall face. The cells are created by forming a grid by stacking individual wall components known as headers and stretchers. The body of wall consists of a system of open cell which are filled with a granular material. The design of crib retaining wall is usually based on conventional design methods derived from Rankine and Coulomb theory so that is able to resist the thrust of soil behind it, because it may be assumed that the wall acts as a rigid body. However, deformation characteristics of crib walls cannot be assumed as monolithic. They consist of individual members which have been stacked to creat a three dimensional grid. Therefore, the segmental grid allows relative movement between the individual member within the wall. The three dimensional flexible grid leads to stress distribution by interaction behavior between soil and crib wall. Therefore, in this study, in order to analysis the trends of deflection of crib wall system, new numerical models based on the results of Brandl's full scale test are introduced for design concept.
