  • This paper presents the behavior of geopolymer concrete beams reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. In the study, ordinary Portland cement concrete and geopolymer concrete beams having GFRP bars were prepared and tested under four-point loading. The load-deflection diagrams and load capacities of the tested beams were obtained. It was observed that the tested beams exhibited good ductility and significant deflection capacity. The results showed that increasing the tension GFRP reinforcement ratio caused enhancement in the strength capacity of geopolymer concrete beams. In addition, the tested beams were analyzed to obtain the load capacity and the load-deflection responses. The theoretical load-deflection curves and load bearing capacities have been predicted well with the test results. Parametric study has been performed to determine the influences of concrete strength, shear span to depth ratio (a/d) and reinforcement ratio on the behavior of geopolymer concrete beams longitudinally reinforced with GFRP bars. It was concluded that increasing concrete strength led to an increase in load capacity. Besides, the ultimate load increased as the reinforcement ratio increased. On the other hand, increasing a/d ratio reduced the ultimate load value of GFRP reinforced geopolymer concrete beams.

  • In the analysis of the 3 dimensional plate structures by the finite element method, the triangular elements are generally used for the global stiffness matrix of the analyzed system. But the triangular elements of the plates have some problems in the process of formulation and in the precision of analysis. The formulation of the finite element method to analyze 3 dimensional plate structures using quadrilateral elements is presented in this paper. The degree of freedom off nodal point is 6, that is, the displacements in the direction off-y-z is and the rotations about x-y-z axis and then the degree of freedom off element is 24. For the comparison of the analysis using triangular elements and quadrilateral elements, the rectangular plates subjected to the uniform load and a concentrated load on the centroid of the plate, for which the theoretical solutions have been obtained, are analyzed. The calculated deflections of the rectangular plates using the finite element method by the triangular elements and the quadrilateral elements are also compared with the deflections of the plates calculated by theoretical solutions. The defections of the rectangular plates calculated by the finite element method using the quadrilateral elements are closer to the theoretical solutions than the defections calculated by the finite element method using the triangular elements. The deflection of the centroid of plate, calculated by the finite element method, converges to that of theoretical solution as the number of elements is increased. This convergence is much more rapid for the case of using the quakrilateral elements than fir the case of using triangular elements.

  • A typical gantry crane is generally used to lift and transport objects in various workplaces. Most of the supporting structures in a gantry crane are fixed on the ground while the moving hoist is running overhead along the girder. There are some disadvantages to its long installation time and high installation cost. Therefore, a hydraulic based gantry crane was studied to solve the issues of typical gantry cranes. The supporting structure of the proposed gantry crane consisted of a hydraulic cylinder and telescopic boom. The dimension of the proposed gantry crane can be decreased due to its simplified structure. The analytical and theoretical methods were used to verify the structural stability of the proposed crane. The most severe load condition was considered for the analysis, and the stress and deflection of the structure are analyzed. The simulation results were as expected from the theoretical analysis. Finally, the structural and dynamic safety of the proposed hydraulic based gantry crane was validated. The obtained results can be used as guidelines in the design process of the hydraulic based gantry crane.

  • An inverse self-iterative procedure is developed to determine layer moduli which are significant for the structural evaluation of pavements in developing rational and analytical rehabilitation technique. Falling weight deflectometer(FWD) is adopted as a non-destructive testing(NDT)device. The layer elastic theory is used to interpret NDT data. The theoretical deflection basins of pavement structures obtained by full factorial design are used for a parametric study on the characteristics of deflection basins and regression analyses. Regression equations to estimate layer moduli of flexible pavements are proposed through the regression analyses of theoretical deflection basins. The relationships between the rate of change of moduli and deflections are developed for the efficient iteration. An inverse self-iterative procedure to ensure the accuracy of the layer moduli is proposed. Validity and applicability of the developed procedure are verified through various numerical model tests.

  • In this paper, we have measured the effect of the optical spot size, incident upon the quadrant photodetector, on the optical displacement sensitivity of the optical beam deflection technique. We have built an optical displacement detection system based on the optical beam deflection method using 3 mW He-Ne laser and measured the displacement sensitivity with changing the optical spot size on the quadrant photodetector. We have also calculated the changes in the optical displacement sensitivity as a function of the incident laser spot size by modeling a circular optical spot with constant laser intensity. Our experimental and theoretical studies show that the optical displacement sensitivity increases with the decrease in the optical spot size. This suggests that in the design of the optical motion detection systems with sub-nanometer sensitivity, the displacement sensitivity can be optimized by reducing the size of the incident optical spot on the detector.

  • In bridge structures, damage may induce an additional deflection which may naturally contain essential information about the damage. However, inverse mapping from the damage-induced deflection to the actual damage location and severity is generally complex, particularly for statically indeterminate systems. In this paper, a new load concept, called the positive-bending-inspection-load (PBIL) is proposed to construct a simple inverse mapping from the damage-induced deflection to the actual damage location. A PBIL for an inspection region is defined as a load or a system of loads which guarantees the bending moment to be positive in the inspection region. From the theoretical investigations, it was proven that the damage-induced chord-wise deflection (DI-CD) has the maximum value with the abrupt change in its slope at the damage location under a PBIL. Hence, a novel damage localization method is proposed based on the DI-CD under a PBIL. The procedure may be summarized as: (1) identification of the modal flexibility matrices from acceleration measurements, (2) design for a PBIL for an inspection region of interest in a structure, (3) calculation of the chord-wise deflections for the PBIL using the modal flexibility matrices, and (4) damage localization by finding the location with the maximum DI-CD with the abrupt change in its slope within the inspection region. Procedures from (2)-(4) can be repeated for several inspection regions to cover the whole structure complementarily. Numerical verification studies were carried out on a simply supported beam and a three-span continuous beam model. Experimental verification study was also carried out on a two-span continuous beam structure with a steel box-girder. It was found that the proposed method can identify the damage existence and damage location for small damage cases with narrow cuts at the bottom flange.

  • The article presents a theoretical-experimental approach developed for modeling the coefficient of sliding friction in the dynamic system tool-workpiece in slide diamond burnishing of low-alloy unhardened steels. The experimental setup, implemented on conventional lathe, includes a specially designed device, with a straight cantilever beam as body. The beam is simultaneously loaded by bending (from transverse slide friction force) and compression (from longitudinal burnishing force), which is a reason for geometrical nonlinearity. A method, based on the idea of separation of the variables (time and metric) before establishing the differential equation of motion, has been applied for dynamic modeling of the beam elastic curve. Between the longitudinal (burnishing force) and transverse (slide friction force) forces exists a correlation defined by Coulomb's law of sliding friction. On this basis, an analytical relationship between the beam deflection and the sought friction coefficient has been obtained. In order to measure the deflection of the beam, strain gauges connected in a "full bridge" type of circuit are used. A flexible adhesive is selected, which provides an opportunity for dynamic measurements through the constructed measuring system. The signal is proportional to the beam deflection and is fed to the analog input of USB DAQ board, from where the signal enters in a purposely created virtual instrument which is developed by means of Labview. The basic characteristic of the virtual instrument is the ability to record and visualize in a real time the measured deflection. The signal sampling frequency is chosen in accordance with Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem. In order to obtain a regression model of the friction coefficient with the participation of the diamond burnishing process parameters, an experimental design with 55 experimental points is synthesized. A regression analysis and analysis of variance have been carried out. The influence of the factors on the friction coefficient is established using sections of the hyper-surface of the friction coefficient model with the hyper-planes.

  • The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites is significantly growing in construction and infrastructure applications where durability under harsh environmental conditions is of great concern. In order to examine the applicability of FRP rebar as a reinforcement in flexural member, flexural tests were conducted. 12 beams with different FRP materials such as CFRP, GFRP and Hybrid FRP and reinforcement ratio were tested and analyzed in terms of failure mode, moment-deflection, flexural capacity, ductility index and sectional strain distribution. The test results were also compared with the theoretical model represented in ACI 440.1R06. Test results indicate that the flexural capacity of the beams reinforced by FRP bars can be accurately predicted using the ultimate design theory. They also show that the current ACI model for computing the deflection overestimates the actual deflection of GFRP series and underestimates the deflection of CFRP series.

  • An experimental research was conducted to investigate the strength of biaxially loaded short and slender reinforced concrete columns with high strength concrete. In the study, square and L-shaped section reinforced concrete columns were constructed and tested to obtain the load-deformation behaviour and strength of columns. The test results of column specimens were analysed with a theoretical method based on the fiber element technique. The theoretical ultimate strength capacities and the test results of column specimens have been compared and discussed in the paper. Besides this, observed failure mode and experimental and theoretical load-lateral deflection behaviour of the column specimens are presented.
