This study's purpose is to gain basic data for the factory automation of manufacturing custom-made girdles. For this study , obese women in their 30s and 40s was experimented through direct measuring and by the 3D scanner, by means of which the proportions of the subject's body was measured. Based upon the results of this experiment, individually designed girdles were made. In order to gain the basic data for the factory automation of manufacturing custom-made girdles, the patterns and the clothing pressure and the feeling of wearing such girdles were analyzed. This study can be summarized as follows: The material properties and the designs of existing functional girdles in the market were studied thoroughly, and the subject were required to wear those existing girdles. On the basis of this result, the experimental girdles were designed and produced which could serve well the subject's intension. The experimental girdles were of the basic long-type in order to apply to all sorts of girdles, and they were produced according to the style and pattern of the existing grading system. The second experiment was conducted by applying the subject's body measurements. Due to the elasticity of the material, in girdles the smaller measurements were to be used in this second experiment were: 80% of waist size, 84% of the hip and 85% of the thigh. To determine the length of the girdles, the same measurements were applied. The test results of the feeling of wearing the experimental girdles showed that the second, custom-made experimental girdles were better. According to the test results of the clothing pressure, the second experimental girdles(custom-made girdles) marked the higher pressure than the first on every part of the body, especially on the hips and thighs. Thus, it can be said that the second experimental girdles are better than the first in lifting up the hips. It is expected that the design methods developed in this study can be utilized as basic resources for the factory automation system of manufacturing custom-made girdles.
The experimental design methodology was applied in the drop tube furnace (DTF) to predict the various combustion properties according to the operating conditions and to assess the coal plant safety. Response surface method (RSM) was introduced as a design of experiment, and the database for RSM was set with the numerical simulation of DTF. The dependent variables such as burnout ratios (BOR) of coal and $CO/CO_2$ ratios were mathematically described as a function of three independent variables (coal particle size, carrier gas flow rate, wall temperature) being modeled by the use of the central composite design (CCD), and evaluated using a second-order polynomial multiple regression model. The prediction of BOR showed a high coefficient of determination (R2) value, thus ensuring a satisfactory adjustment of the second-order polynomial multiple regression model with the simulation data. However, $CO/CO_2$ ratio had a big difference between calculated values and predicted values using conventional RSM, which might be mainly due to the dependent variable increses or decrease very steeply, and hence the second order polynomial cannot follow the rates. To relax the increasing rate of dependent variable, $CO/CO_2$ ratio was taken as common logarithms and worked again with RSM. The application of logarithms in the transformation of dependent variables showed that the accuracy was highly enhanced and predicted the simulation data well.
This research was motivated by our encounter with the situation where an optimization was done based on statistically non-significant models having poor fits. Such a situation took place in a research to optimize manufacturing conditions for improving storage stability of coffee-supplemented milk beverage by using response surface methodology, where two responses are $Y_1$=particle size and $Y_2$=zeta-potential, two factors are $F_1$=speed of primary homogenization (rpm) and $F_2$=concentration of emulsifier (%), and the optimization objective is to simultaneously minimize $Y_1$ and maximize $Y_2$. For response surface analysis, practically, the second-order polynomial model is almost solely used. But, there exists the cases in which the second-order model fails to provide a good fit, to which remedies are seldom known to researchers. Thus, as an alternative to a failed second-order model, we present the heterogeneous third-order model, which can be used when the experimental plan is a two-factor central composite design having -1, 0, and 1 as the coded levels of factors. And, for multi-response optimization, we suggest a modified desirability function technique. Using these two methods, we have obtained statistical models with improved fits and multi-response optimization results with the predictions better than those in the previous research. Our predicted optimum combination of conditions is ($F_1$, $F_2$)=(5,000, 0.295), which is different from the previous combination. This research is expected to help improve the quality of response surface analysis in experimental sciences including food science of animal resources.
Fire incident in buildings is common, so the fire safety design of the framed structure is imperative, especially for the unprotected or partly protected bare steel frames. However, software for structural fire analysis is not widely available. As a result, the performance-based structural fire design is urged on the basis of using user-friendly and conventional nonlinear computer analysis programs so that engineers do not need to acquire new structural analysis software for structural fire analysis and design. The tool is desired to have the capacity of simulating the different fire scenarios and associated detrimental effects efficiently, which includes second-order P-D and P-d effects and material yielding. Also the nonlinear behaviour of large-scale structure becomes complicated when under fire, and thus its simulation relies on an efficient and effective numerical analysis to cope with intricate nonlinear effects due to fire. To this end, the present fire study utilizes a second-order elastic/plastic analysis software NIDA to predict structural behaviour of bare steel framed structures at elevated temperatures. This fire study considers thermal expansion and material degradation due to heating. Degradation of material strength with increasing temperature is included by a set of temperature-stress-strain curves according to BS5950 Part 8 mainly, which implicitly allows for creep deformation. This finite element stiffness formulation of beam-column elements is derived from the fifth-order PEP element which facilitates the computer modeling by one member per element. The Newton-Raphson method is used in the nonlinear solution procedure in order to trace the nonlinear equilibrium path at specified elevated temperatures. Several numerical and experimental verifications of framed structures are presented and compared against solutions in literature. The proposed method permits engineers to adopt the performance-based structural fire analysis and design using typical second-order nonlinear structural analysis software.
This paper describes the buckling phenomenon of a tubular truss with unsupported length through a full-scale test and presents a practical computational method for the design of the trusses allowing for the contribution of torsional stiffness against buckling, of which the effect has never been considered previously by others. The current practice for the design of a planar truss has largely been based on the linear elastic approach which cannot allow for the contribution of torsional stiffness and tension members in a structural system against buckling. The over-simplified analytical technique is unable to provide a realistic and an economical design to a structure. In this paper the stability theory is applied to the second-order analysis and design of the structural form, with detailed allowance for the instability and second-order effects in compliance with design code requirements. Finally, the paper demonstrates the application of the proposed method to the stability design of a commonly adopted truss system used in support of glass panels in which lateral bracing members are highly undesirable for economical and aesthetic reasons.
The determination of a regression model is important in using statistical designs of experiments. Generally, the exact regression model is not known, and experimenters suppose that a certain model form will be fit. Then an experimental design suitable for that predetermined model form is selected and the experiment is conducted. However, the initially chosen regression model may not be correct, and this can result in undesirable statistical properties. We develop model-robust experimental designs that have stable prediction variance for a family of candidate regression models over a cuboidal region by using genetic algorithms and the desirability function method. We then compare the stability of prediction variance of model-robust experimental designs with those of the 3-level face centered cube. These model-robust experimental designs have moderately high G-efficiencies for all candidate models that the experimenter may potentially wish to fit, and outperform the cuboidal design for the second-order model. The G-efficiencies are provided for the model-robust experimental designs and the face centered cube.
For effective response surface modeling during sequential approximate optimization (SAO), the normalized and the augmented D-optimality criteria are presented. The normalized D-optimality criterion uses the normalized Fisher information matrix by its diagonal terms in order to obtain a balance among the linear-order and higher-order terms. Then, it is augmented to directly include other experimental designs or the pre-sampled designs. This augmentation enables the trust region managed sequential approximate optimization to directly use the pre-sampled designs in the overlapped trust regions in constructing the new response surface models. In order to show the effectiveness of the normalized and the augmented D-optimality criteria, following two comparisons are performed. First, the information surface of the normalized D-optimal design is compared with those of the original D-optimal design. Second, a trust-region managed sequential approximate optimizer having three D-optimal designs is developed and three design problems are solved. These comparisons show that the normalized D-optimal design gives more rotatable designs than the original D-optimal design, and the augmented D-optimal design can reduce the number of analyses by 30% - 40% than the original D-optimal design.
This paper proposed a novel double closed control strategy for single-phase voltage source pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifier based on active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) and dq current decoupling control. First, the mathematical model of the single-phase PWM rectifier in the d-q axis synchronous rotating reference frame is established by constructing a virtual component using a second-order generalized integrator (SOGI). Then, the mathematical model is simplified according to the active power conservation, and the first-order equation of single-phase PWM rectifier voltage outer loop is acquired. A linear auto-disturbance rejection controller is used to design the voltage outer loop according to the first-order equation. Finally, the proposed control strategy and the traditional PI control are compared and verified by simulation and physical experiments. Both simulation and experimental results confirm that the proposed control strategy has excellent dynamic performance and strong rejection ability to disturbances.
Purpose: A noncentral composite design method is to be developed to explore farther region for the first factorial design. A general guideline for sequential experimentation is provided. Methods: (1) A non-overlapping noncentral composite design (NNCD) is developed, in which the second factorial design shares one design point that indicates the best response value in the first factorial design. (2) Four composite designs are compared in terms of the four design evaluation criteria, which are D-, A, G, and I-optimality. (3) A follow-up design strategy is suggested based on the interaction effect, direction of improvement, number of factors. Results: (1) NNCD and model building method are presented, which is useful for exploring farther region from first factorial design block. (2) The performances of the four composite designs are compared. (3) A follow-up design strategy is suggested. Conclusion: (1) NNCD will be useful to explore farther region for the first factorial design. (2) A follow-up design strategy can be beneficial to the experimental practitioners for product and process design and improvement.
The aim of our research was to apply experimental design methodology in the optimization of N, N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline (RNO, which is indictor of OH radical formation) degradation using gas mixing-circulation plasma process. The reaction was mathematically described as a function of four independent variables [voltage ($X_1$), gas flow rate ($X_2$), liquid flow rate ($X_3$) and time ($X_4$)] being modeled by the use of the central composite design (CCD). RNO removal efficiency was evaluated using a second-order polynomial multiple regression model. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed a high coefficient of determination ($R^2$) value of 0.9111, thus ensuring a satisfactory adjustment of the second-order polynomial multiple regression model with the experimental data. The application of response surface methodology (RSM) yielded the following regression equation, which is an empirical relationship between the RNO removal efficiency and independent variables in a coded unit: RNO removal efficiency (%) = $77.71+10.04X_1+10.72X_2+1.78X_3+17.66X_4+5.91X_1X_2+3.64X_2X_3-8.72X_2X_4-7.80X{_1}^2-6.49X{_2}^2-5.67X{_4}^2$. Maximum RNO removal efficiency was predicted and experimentally validated. The optimum voltage, air flow rate, liquid flow rate and time were obtained for the highest desirability at 117.99 V, 4.88 L/min, 6.27 L/min and 24.65 min, respectively. Under optimal value of process parameters, high removal(> 97 %) was obtained for RNO.
