  • This study presents experimental and numerical results of prestressed concrete composite beams with different casting and stressing sequence. The beams were tested under three-point bending and it was found that prestressed concrete composite beams could not achieve monolith behavior due to interface slippage between two layers. The initial stress distribution due to different construction sequence has little effect on the maximum load of composite beams. The multi-step FE analyses could simulate different casting and stressing sequence thus correctly capturing the initial stress distribution induced by staged construction. Three contact algorithms were considered for interaction between concrete layers in the FE models namely tie constraint, cohesive contact and surface-to-surface contact. It was found that both cohesive contact and surface-to-surface contact could simulate the interface slip even though each algorithm considers different shear transfer mechanism. The use of surface-to-surface contact for beams with more than 2 layers of concrete is not recommended as it underestimates the maximum load in this study.

  • In many practical lubricated contacts such as a rough concentrated contact on the sliding of nominally flat surfaces, the fluid may be of molecular (nanometer) scale owing to the asperity interactions on the surfaces. Under this condition, there is insufficient lubricant on the concentrated contact spot to maintain a realistic continuum. Rheological behavior for this kind of concentrated contact was studied to know whether the application of viscous fluid model is appropriate. The interaction of two rough surfaces is simplified as perfectly flat-rough surfaces contact under certain conditions by "composite topography" and for a nanometer scale fluid film, three kinds of rheological fluid behavior are analyzed in elastohydrodynamic asperity point contact.t contact.

  • The dynamic contact between a high-speed wheel and an elastic beam is numerically analyzed by solving the whole equations of motion of the wheel and the beam subjected to the contact condition. For the stability of the numerical solution, the velocity and acceleration constraints as well as the displacement constraint are imposed on the contact point. Through the numerical examples, it is shown that the acceleration contact constraint including the Coriolis and centripetal accelerations are crucial for the numerical stability.

  • This study has investigated the 3-D deflection characteristics of a flexible plate levitated by non-contact grippers using SPIV method. The measuring instrument consisted of a flexible plate located under four non-contact grippers and two cameras at the bottom of a transparent acrylic plate. Measurements were made on two materials (PVC and PC) for the plate with 50×50 cm2 area and 1 mm thickness. The deflection characteristics and flatness vary depending on the plate material, the gripper position and the air flow supplied to the gripper. For the material of PVC, the overall defection is convex. As the gripper position goes outward from the plate center, the upmost bending point also moves to the outside of the plate with the flatness increasing. However, the air flow rate does not affect the deflection pattern except for the small increase of flatness. For the material of PC, the shape of deflection changes from convex to concave as the gripper position goes out. The flatness is the highest at the point of transition from convex to concave, but the air flowrate has little effect on the flatness.

  • We have developed a highly responsible probing system for inspection of electrical properties of assemble PCB$_{s}$ (printed circuit boards). However, as the duration of the impact occurring between a probe and a solder joint on PCB is very short, it is very difficult to control the harmful peak impact force and the slip motion of the probe to sufficient level only by its vorce feedback control with high gains. To overcome these disadvantages of the prototype, it needs ot obtain some information of the solder joint in advance before the contact. In addition, to guarantee the reliability of the probing task, the probing system is required to measure several points around the probale target point at high speed. There fore, to meet such requirements, we propose a new noncontaet sensor capable of detecting simultaneously position and normal vectors of the multiple points around the probable target point in real time. By using this information, we can prepare a control strategy for stable contact motion on impact. In this paper, we described measuring priniciple, design, and development of the sensor. The effectiveness of the proposed sensor is verified through a series of experiments.s.

  • In this study, the ultrasonic motor which has hollowed cross type stator was designed, and the elastic body of ultrasonic motor was optimized by using a finite element analysis program(ANSYS 9.0). When the length of leg(L) of the elastic body was increased and the width of piezoceramics was decreased, the resonant frequency was increased and the displacement of contact point between the rotor and the stator was increased. However, when the length of the leg was over the 1/3 point of the width of ceramics, the displacement of the contact point was decreased, because the elastic buckle was generated in the leg.

  • In this paper error-compensating techniques in three-point weighing method to precisely measure unbalance properties such as center of gravity and unbalance moment. In the conventional static methods, 1) fixture-errors, 2) effects of the contact between the fixture and the load scales, and 3) side effect due to the lateral frictional forces acting on the contact points between the fixture and the load scales are the major factors that lead to measurement errors. The proposed error-compensating method perfectly eliminates both the fixture-error and the contact-error simultaneously by manipulating the three measured reaction forces at three different angular locations. Also the friction-error is calibrated by comparing the sum of three reactions with the actual mass of the specimen. A set of measurement is performed using the same measuring system as Lee's, and a comparison of the results from the convectional, Lee's, and the proposed method is provided. The results show that the proposed method effectively compensates the errors listed above.

  • Autoadhesion strength of PS/PS Interfaces in solvent welding was determined as a function of processing conditions by butt joint test. It was verified that the chain mobility and surface roughness at PS/PS interface were enhanced by the applied solvent having a similar solubility parameter as PS and resulted in the dramatic improvement of autoadhesion strength at PS/PS interface. It was found that the mechanism of solvent welding is dependent upon the chain mobility due to the diffusion of solvent to PS interface and the contact area at interface. When the welding temperature is lower than the boiling point of applied solvent, the effect of chain mobility on autoadhesion strength was dominated, while contact area took more important role when welding temperature is above the boiling point of solvent. Autoadhesion strength increased with increasing contact time and contact temperature but :he effect of solvent on autoadhesion strength became smaller.

  • Surface modification of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PEI) films by treatment with ethoxylated alkylaminoanthraquinoes which was synthesized by the reaction of 1-aminoanthraquinone with poly(ethylene glycol) via a series of methylene spacer were investigated. The synthesized ethoxylated alkylaminoanthraquinones showed definite cloud point as in nonionic surfactants, and the adsorption of the compounds on PET increased near the cloud point. At same temperature the adsorption increased with the length of methylene spacer; hexyl-octyl-, and decyl-. The adsorption was limited to the extreme surface of PET film, which made the surface of PET film hydrophillic by reducing water contact angle.
