  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the actual pronunciation of the words of foreign origin on TV news programs, and to review the regulations related to it. To investigate the actual pronunciation of the foreign words, the frequency data of the National Korean Language Institute is used as the subject of investigation. There is a big gap between the actual pronunciation and the orthography of the words of foreign origin. And received pronunciation of foreign words is need to teach or learn Korean efficiently. I suggest the pronunciation of foreign words is marked on Korean dictionary instead of revising the related regulations.

  • The purpose of this study was to clarify the origin which have misused terms, analyze Its meanings and suggest the unified terms. The content of this study are as follows. The origin of the terms in western dress is different with the areas of cultural influence. Japanese occupied much more than other languages in the apparel industry after the civilization. and English has dominated in the educational filed since 1945 the Liberalization. French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch are added. These languages came to the clothing field via Japanese and English or directly from the countries. 망토(manteau프), 메리야스(medias스), 러닝셔츠(일) 라사(raxa네), 오트 쿠튀르(Haute Couture 프), 비로드(veludo 포), etc. However the words of foreign origin have misused or corrupted until now a days. 마이 (재킷, 상의), 노 슬립, 소데나시 (슬리브리스, 민소매) 넌라쟈(브래지어), 노타이, 노타이샤쓰(오픈칼라 셔츠, 넥타이를 매지 않은 셔츠) 와이샤쓰(드레스 ttu츠), etc. And also these terms are confused in using because of the word's diversity, the different nationality, change of the marking rules, and the difference between the education and production field terms. On the others hand, this study explained the differences between western costume and Korean costume as the clothing manufacture terms were translated to Korean. bodice-길, collar, neckline-깃, belt, sash-(허리)띠 And then the untied terms were suggested through the comparison production field and educational area (including schools and institutes). lapel, 라펠(학교용어) (학원용어), 가에리 (일) (의류산업 현장용어), 아랫깃(통일어) By the way, this study involved the origin of and misused teams in sewing and presented the unified terms. 미까시 (X)-미 카에시(일) - 안단($\bigcirc$), 이새(X)―홈줄임 ($\bigcirc$) As the above , the characteristics of clothing terms which have misused are Japans,;e, corrupt Japanese, false reports foreign words via Korean, Japanese, compound words of Korean and Japanese, compound words of English and Japanese. • The study of English words in terms of etymology has a long history, going back over 110 years since Murray et al. (1884). Scholars have therefore had lots of time to gather all kind of information on the origin of English words. In fact, Modern English is the product of a long and complex process of historical developments from a great diversity of sources. The origins and development of English words meaning ‘a vessel for washing, a bath or a toilet’ are traced from Old English to the twentieth century in this paper in terms of the semantic and/or conceptual categories of the words with their particular senses. We conclude this paper with a brief discussion of how the teaching of English words can give some feedback to both teachers and students under the circumstances of English education in Korea and/or how we come to a better understanding of this charming field of English etymology in its own right.

  • Functional MRI technique was used in this study for examining the language switching mechanisms between the first language (L1) and the second language (L2). Language switching mechanism is regarded as a complex task that involves an interaction between L1 and L2. The aim of study is to find out the brain activation patterns during the phonological process of reading real English words and English words written in Korean characters in a bilingual person. Korean-English bilingual subjects were examined while they covertly read four types of words native Korean words, Korean words of a foreign origin, English words written in Korean characters, and English words. The fMRI results reveal that the left hemispheric language-related regions at the brain, such as the left inferior frontal, superior temporal, and parietal cortices, have a greater response to the presentation of English words written in Korean characters than for the other types of words, in addition, a slight difference was observed in the occipital-temporal lobe. These results suggest that a change in the brain circuitry underlying the relational processes of language switching is mainly associated with general executive processing system in the left prefrontal cortex rather than with a similarity-based processing system in the occipital-temporal lobes.

Comparative linguistic analytical approaches were employed for this research. Conclusions and summary of finds and results of this study can be summarized as follows: It was found that the name, boshon had its origin in Aramaic, while the name, chung had its origin in Chinese. The word, boshon (보션) is a transliteration of Aramaic pattashehon, leggins. The name, boshon is a borrowed word from Aramaic. The word, bai shu(背戍) of Koryo period and the word, boshon(보션) of Chosun period were originated in one word, ai shu was taken from a singular form, while boshon was taken from a plural form. Because these two words in Koran have different phonetic values, ′they ar treated as tow different words. The name, chung(쳥) is a transliteration of Chinese cheuan, ch′"uan, Korean chung is a corrupted form of cheunan or ch′"uan.

  • In this study, 70 national brands among men's wear brands were selected to examine linguistic characteristics of domestic national men's wear brand names. Linguistic factors which were used in national men's wear brand names were analyzed to understand their characteristics. Formative and semantic characteristics of each brand name were analyzed on the basis of the results from previous studies. It was found that long words with over four syllables are preferred than short words and single words in the form of noun are frequently used for domestic national men's wear brand names in terms of linguistic formality. English is most widely used in brand names, and European languages such as French, Spanish, and Italian are also used frequently under the influence of the country of origin. Next, the analysis result on the semantic characteristics of domestic national men's wear brand names showed that descriptive brand names are used to convey brand information directly and easily, or freestanding brand names which are absolutely irrelevant and newly coined words are chosen to create a characteristic image. In other words, brand names represent detailed business and product category of men's wear by forming a brand image of men's wear (ex. Man, Homme, Zio), and provide the information about properties and benefits related to the product such as dignity, masterpiece, and luxurious lifestyle to consumers by presenting the concept of the brand.

  • In order to compare two hypotheses on the origin of semantic interference effect that has been offered in the psycholinguistic literature, we conducted two experiments using the picture-word interference paradigm. When participants named the pictures of the objects simultaneously presented with distractor words, they were required to use either native words (Experiment 1) or loanwords (Experiment 2). The pictures were paired with three kinds of distractor words that were identical, semantically related and neutral to the picture. Two observations were obtained from two experiments. Firstly, the naming times of the pictures were more fast in context of the identical distractors than in context of the neutral ones. Secondly, naming times were more slow in the presence of the semantically related distractors relative to the neutral ones. These findings support the claim that semantic interference is based on a lexical retrieval conflict.
