  • Path-following control is considered as one of the most fundamental skills to realize autonomous navigation of marine vessels in the ocean. This study addresses with the path-following control for a ship in which there are environmental disturbances in the directions of the surge, sway, and yaw motions. The guiding principle and back-stepping method was utilized to solve the ship's tracking problem on the reference path generated by a virtual ship. For path-following control, error dynamics is one of the most important skills, and it extends to the research fields of automatic collision avoidance and automatic berthing control. The algorithms for the guiding principles and error variables have been verified by numerical simulation. As a result, most error variables converged to zero values with the controller except for the yaw angle error. One of the most interesting results is that the tracking errors of path-following control between two ships are smaller than the existing safe passing distances considering interaction forces from near passing ships. Moreover, a trade-off between tracking performance and the ship's safety should be considered for determining the proper control parameters to prevent the destructive failure of actuators such as propellers, fins, and rudders during the path-following of marine vessels.

  • The most widely used method for determining the blast effects of explosives is the Trauzl test. This test is used to measure the explosive power (strength) of a substance by determining volume increase, which is produced by the detonation of a tested explosive charge in the cavity of a lead block with defined quality and size. In this paper, Trauzl lead block test and High speed 3D-DIC (Digital Image Correlation) system were conducted to evaluate the stemming effect of the blast hole. The effects of stemming materials can be expressed as the expansion of the cavity in a standard lead block through explosion of the explosives. The blasting experiment was conducted with emulsion explosives. The stemming material in the blast hole of lead block, which was adopted in this study, were using sand and stone chips. Results of blasting experiment and numerical analysis showed that the expansion rates of lead block were most affected by stone chips followed by sand. Also, as result of dynamic strain measurement on the lead block surface of High speed 3D-DIC system, the displacement and surface strain on the block were the highest in the experiment case of stone chips stemming.

  • Speech articulators are coordinated for the purpose of segmental constriction in terms of a task. In particular, vertical jaw movements repeatedly contribute to consonantal as well as vocalic constriction. The current study explores vertical jaw movements in conjunction with bilabial constriction in bilabial stop /p/ in the context /a/-to-/a/. Revisiting kinematic data of /p/ collected using the electromagenetic midsagittal articulometer (EMMA) method from seven (four female and three male) speakers of Seoul Korean, we examined maximum vertical jaw position, its relative timing with respect to the upper and lower lips, and lip aperture minima. The results of those dependent variables are recapitulated in terms of linguistic (different word boundaries) and paralinguistic (different speech rates) factors as follows. Firstly, maximum jaw height was lower in the across-word boundary condition (across-word < within-word), but it did not differ as a function of different speech rates (comfortable = fast). Secondly, more reduction in the lip aperture (LA) gesture occurred in fast rate, while word-boundary effects were absent. Thirdly, jaw raising was still in progress after the lips' positional extrema were achieved in the within-word condition, while the former was completed before the latter in the across-word condition. Lastly, relative temporal lags between the jaw and the lips (UL and LL) were more synchronous in fast rate, compared to comfortable rate. When these results are considered together, it is possible to posit that speakers are not tolerant of lenition to the extent that it is potentially realized as a labial approximant in either word-boundary condition while jaw height still manifested lower jaw position in the across-word boundary condition. Early termination of vertical jaw maxima before vertical lower lip maxima across-word condition may be partly responsible for the spatial reduction of jaw raising movements. This may come about as a consequence of an excessive number of factors (e.g., upper lip height (UH), lower lip height (LH), jaw angle (JA)) for the representation of a vector with two degrees of freedom (x, y) engaged in a gesture-based task (e.g., lip aperture (LA)). In the task-dynamic application toolkit, the jaw angle parameter can be assigned numerical values for greater weight in the across-word boundary condition, which in turn gives rise to lower jaw position. Speech rate-dependent spatial reduction in lip aperture may be able to be resolved by means of manipulating activation time of an active tract variable in the gestural score level.

  • The increase in impermeable pavement from recent urbanization has resulted in an increase in surface runoff. The surface runoff has also increased the burden of the existing drainage system. This drainage system has structural limitations in that the catchment area is reduced by the waste particles transported with the surface runoff. In addition, the efficiency of the drainage system is decreased. To overcome these limitations, a new type of drainage system with a drainage layer was developed and applied. In this study, various volume porosity and permeability of the lower drainage layer were simulated using ANSYS CFX, which is a three dimensional computational fluid dynamics program. The results showed that the outlet velocity of the 35% volume porosity was faster than that of the 20% and 50% cases, and there was no relationship between the volume porosity and drainage performance. The permeability of the drainage layer can be determined from the particle size of the material, and a simulation of five conditions showed that 2 mm sand grains are most suitable for workability and usability. This study suggests appropriate values of the volume porosity and particle size of the drainage layer. This consideration can be advantageous for reducing and preventing flood damage.

  • The bond analysis model equation was proposed through the regression analysis of the experimental values of bond behavior for each rebar. In order to verify the appropriateness of the bond analysis model equation, the bond behaviors calculated by the proposed bond analysis model, BPE model and CMR model were compared with experimental values. The proposed bond model showed the closest behavior to the experimental values when compared to other analysis models. The former models can not consider the different properties of GFRP rebar according to composed materials, mixing and manufacturing method and the latter has limitation to express the relationships between bond behavior because of derived formula by numerical analysis. This study proposed the analytical model different considering bond mechanism according to surface type. In order to verity the appropriateness of the bond analytical model, the bond behaviors calculated by the proposed bond analytical model, BPE model and CMR model were compared with experimental values. The proposed bond model showed the closest behavior to the experimental values when compared to other analysis models.

  • Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation on the thermal boundary resistance(TBR) of an aluminum(Al)/silicon(Si) interface was performed in the present study. The constant heat flux across the Si/Al interface was simulated by adding the kinetic energy in hot Si region and removing the same amount of the energy from the cold Al region. The TBR estimated from the sharp temperature drop at the interface was independent of heat flux and equal to $5.13{\pm}0.17K{\cdot}m^2/GW$ at 300K. The simulation result was experimentally confirmed by the time-domain thermoreflectance technique. A 90nm thick Al film was deposited on a Si(100) wafer using an e-beam evaporator and the TBR on the film/substrate interface was measured using the time-domain thermoreflectance technique based on a femtosecond laser system. A numerical solution of the transient heat conduction equation was obtained using the finite difference method to estimate the TBR value. Experimental results were compared to the prediction and discussions on the nanoscale thermal transport phenomena were made.

  • It has been more than 30 years since the term climate change began to become popular, but recently, rapid accelerated phenomena are appearing in the form of extreme weather all over the world. It is showing a distinctly different phenomenon from previous years, with heavy rain falling in the Death Valley desert in the U.S., and temperatures rising more than 40 degrees in Europe. In the Korean Peninsula, super typhoons with very strong wind speeds have become a major disaster risk for many years, and the supply of more energy due to the rise in sea temperature increases the possibility of super typhoons, requiring a proactive response. Unlike the method using numerical analysis, this study analyzed past typhoon data to study changes in typhoon characteristics for coastal disaster prevention. Existing studies have targeted all typhoons that have occurred, but in this study, a specific area was set up in the southern ocean of the Korean Peninsula and then a study was conducted. The subjects of the study were typhoons that occurred over the past 40 years from 1980 to the present, and it was confirmed that the maximum wind speed of typhoons affecting the Korean Peninsula increased slightly. The wind speed of typhoons in the specific area is about 80% of the maximum wind speed in their lifetime, and a correlation with ENSO could not be confirmed.

  • Predicting the deformation behaviors of sheets in thermoforming processes has been a daunting challenge due to the strong nonlinearities arising from very large deformations, mold-polymer contact condition and hyperelasticity constitutive equations. Nonlinear numerical analysis is always required to face this challenge especially for realistic processing conditions. In this study a 3-D algorithm and the membrane approximation are developed for thermoforming processes. The constitutive equation is expressed in terms of the 2nd Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor and the Cauchy-Green deformation tensor. The 2-term Mooney-Rivlin model is used for the material model equation. The algorithm is established by the finite element formulation employing the total Lagrangian coordinate. The deformation behavior and the stress distribution results of 3-D algorithm with various point boundary conditions are compared to those of the membrane approximation algorithm. Also, the slip boundary condition and the no-slip boundary condition are applied for the systems that have molds. Finally, the effect of sheet temperatures on the final thickness distribution is investigated for the ABS material.

  • This study performed the progressive failure analysis of adhesive joints of a composite pressure vessel with a separated dome by using a cohesive zone model. In order to determine the input parameters of a cohesive element for numerical analysis, the interlaminar fracture toughness values in modes I and II and in the mixed mode for the adhesive joints of the composite pressure vessel were obtained by a material test. All specimens were manufactured by the filament winding method. A mechanical test was performed on adhesively bonded double-lap joints to determine the shear strength of the adhesive joints and verify the reliability of the cohesive zone model for progressive failure analysis. The test results showed that the shear strength of the adhesive joints was 32MPa; the experiment and analysis results had an error of about 4.4%, indicating their relatively good agreement. The progressive failure analysis of a composite pressure vessel with an adhesively bonded dome performed using the cohesive zone model showed that only 5.8% of the total adhesive length was debonded and this debonded length did not affect the structural integrity of the vessel.

  • In this paper, we study reactive congestion control with priority in ATM network. The priority schemes for buffer access, partial buffer sharing have been investigated in order to improve the utilization of ATM network resources the network and to satisfy the most demanding traffic class. We consider in this paper a discrete-time queueing model for partial buffer sharing with two Markov modulated Poisson inputs. This model can be used to analyze the the effects of the partial buffer sharing priority scheme on system performance for realistic cases of bursty services. Explicit formulae are derived for the number of cells in the system and the loss probabilities for the traffic. Congestion may still occur because of unpredictable statistical fluctuation of traffic sources even when preventive control is performed in the network. In this Paper, we study reactive congestion control, in which each source changes its cell emitting rate a daptively to the traffic load at the switching node. Our intention is that,by incorporating such a congcstion control method in ATM network, more efficient congsestion control is established. We develope an analytical model, and carry out an approximateanalysis of reactive congestion con-trol with priority.Numerical results show that several orders of magnitude improvement in the loss probability can be achieved for the high priority class with little impact on the low priority class performance. And the results show that the reactive congestion control with priority are very effective in avoiding congestion and in achieving the statistical gain.
