  • Effects of liquefied calcium supplement on bone mineral density (BMD) and bone health index (osteocalcin, deoxypyridinoline) were investigated in 12 middle aged women. Middle aged women were arranged into 3 groups such as control, Ca500 and Ca750 by liquefied calcium supplement level. BMD was measured at the spine (vertebrae L2-L4). After 6 month, BMD of control group dropped but that of Ca750 were increased from 0.850 to 0.865. The increase in serum calcium and osteocalcin level, and the decrease in urine deoxypyridinoline level were observed in by calcium supplement groups. The bone health index of serum was changed as much as level of calcium supplement. The serum osteocalcin level of Ca750 significantly increased to 7.93 ng/mL after 6 months of calcium supplement. Although we didn't get any significant difference in BMD, we found that the liquefied calcium had no side effect and led effective change in bone health index. Hereafter, we suppose that the liquefied calcium will be available to develop healthy products for preventing osteoporosis.

  • The objective of this study was to compare nutrients intake, health indices, and prevalence of chronic diseases by occupation in middle-aged men, using results from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The subjects were divided into two groups by their occupation (Office worker (OW) and Agri-fishery worker (AFW)) and their percentages were 75.5% and 24.5% respectively. In health-related factors, drinking rate was higher in OW (p<0.001), while smoking rate was higher in AFW (p<0.001). Walking and strength exercise were both higher in OW group. In dietary behavior, the rate of skipping breakfast and eating out was higher in OW (p<0.001). Food supplement usage were consumed by OW more than AFW (p<0.001). Daily energy intake was higher in AFW (p<0.05). There were significant differences in nutrient density per 1,000 kcal of minerals and vitamins between the two groups (p<0.05~p<0.001), except calcium, potassium, vitamin A and thiamin. In body weight, BMI, waist circumference and blood pressures, OW was higher than AFW (p<0.05~p<0.001). Whereas, HDL and LDL-cholesterol were higher in AFW (p<0.001). The prevalence of diabetes was higher in AFW (p<0.001). The results of this study can be used as data to establish nutrition and health strategies for occupation in middle-aged men.

  • This study examined the relationships among fear of falling, ADL/IADL disability, and depressive symptoms among Korean community-dwelling middleaged and older adults based on the disablement process model. The panel data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging(KLoSa) were used to test whether fear of falling affects disablement process as a risk factor and an exacerbator. The results of path analysis showed that middle-aged and older adults who reported fear of falling were more likely to experience ADL/IADL disability and depressive symptoms, and fear of falling influenced depressive symptoms through increasing the risk of ADL/IADL disability. In addition, fear of falling exacerbate the risk of ADL/IADL disability among middle-aged and older adults who had chronic illnesses. The results indicated that fear of falling is not only risk factor but also excerbator in predicting ADL/IADL disability and depressive symptoms prospectively.

  • This research was conducted to examine successful aging and influencing factors in middle aged women. Data were collected from 189 middle-aged women in two cities. Data were collected from July to August 2017 using structured questionnaires. Data collected were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression analysis. The results indicate that the perception of successful aging mean was 128.49 points (range: 33-165). Depression (r=-.20, p=.005) had a significant negative association with perception of successful aging. Family resilience (r=.49, p<.001) and life satisfaction (r=.54, p<.001) were positively correlated with perception of successful aging. The significant predictors of successful aging were age (${\ss}=-.15$, p=.013), family resilience (${\ss}=.24$, p=.002), and life satisfaction (${\ss}=.37$, p<.001), explaining 33.9% of the variance. Based on the study results, we suggest that it is necessary to develop and apply educational strategy to improve perception of successful aging.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify effects of pelvic floor muscle exercise on sexual function and to present basic information on promoting sexual function for employed middle-aged women. Method: Data were collected from July to September, 2005 from a sample of 25 conveniently selected middle-aged working women from B city. For personal reasons, 10 dropped out, leaving 15 women who were treated with the exercise for 6 weeks. Outcome measures on sexual function were assessed by a self-report questionnaire based on the Female Sexual Function Index(Rosen et al, 2000 and translated by Kim, 2004). Cronbach ${\alpha}'s $ for the two studies were .82 and .96 respectively and for this study, .81. Descriptive statistics and Wilcoxon signed rank test were used to analyze the data. Results: The mean score for sexual function was 21.42(range 2-36). There were significant improvements in total sexual function, and 4 sub-scales of sexual function, sexual arousal, vaginal lubrication, orgasm, and coital pain. No significant improvements in sexual desire or sexual satisfaction were found. Conclusion: The small sample means findings must be interpreted with caution, but do suggest that pelvic floor muscle exercise could be an effective exercise for improvement of sexual function.

  • The purpose of this study were to assess iron status and obesity in 82 middle aged women living in Kangnung area. Anthropometric measurements were taken for body weight, height, percentage of body fat and circumferences of waist and hip. Venous blood samples were drawn from subjects for measurement of hemoglobin(Hb), hematocrit(Hct), serum iron(Fe), total iron binding capacity(TIBC), transferrin saturation(TS) and serum ferritin. Dietary intakes of iron(heme iron and nonheme iron), the amounts of MPF(meat, poultry and fish) and ascorbic acid were assessed by modified 24-hr recall method. The results obtained are summarized as follows : Postmenopausal women had more body fat than premenopausal women. That is, postmenopausal women tend to be obeser than premenopausal women. There was no difference in Hb, Hct, Fe, TIBC and TS between pre- and postmenopausal women. But the serum ferritin concentration of postmenopausal women(83.7$\pm$42.1ng/ml) was significantly (p<0.05) higher than premenopausal women(56.4$\pm$41.0ng/ml). Prevalences of iron deficiency (20%, 20.0% and 17.1% respectively) of postmenopausal women. The mean daily intakes of total iron in pre- and postmenopausal women were 17.5$\pm$9.3mg and 15.6$\pm$6.9mg, respectively. Bioavailabilities of dietary iron were 6.5% and 4.5% in pre- and post-groups. These results indicate that individual dietary guidelines should be used to educate middle-aged women different in status of menopause. For example, premenopausal women should increase nutritional iron status and postmenopausal women should try to prevent obesity.

  • Quality of life(QoL) of older cancer patients have not gained enough attention from researchers even when cancer is the number one cause of death of Korean elderly. Therefore, this study aims at understanding the QoL of older cancer patients and factors related to it, applying Taylor(2012)'s Stress-Coping Process model, and by comparing with older chronic disease patients and middle-aged cancer patients. Results indicated that physical health QoL of older cancer patients was the worst and their mental health QoL was similar with middle aged cancer patients. Multi-group analysis of Structural Equation Modeling indicated that the relation between QoL and the stress coping resources was not statistically different from older cancer patients and older chronic disease group, as well older cancer patients and middle-aged cancer patients. Implications of results to improve the QoL of older cancer patients are discussed.
