  • This is a convergence study to investigate the relationship between cereal intake level and food and nutrient intake in 218 Chinese middle aged women aged 40 to 65 years. Data were analyzed by ${\chi}^2$ test, ANOVA, correlation analysis and Jonckheere-Terpstra trend test using SPSS 22.0 program. The results of the study were as follows. The higher the level of cereal intake in the subjects, the lower were the rate of breakfast fasting (p for trend=0.000), overeating (p for trend=0.019), and eating out (p for trend=0.003). The intake of root and tuber crops(p for trend=0.008), meat(p for trend=0.043), pulses(p for trend=0.020), and light colored vegetables(p for trend=0.015) per 1,000 kcal of energy increased when the level of cereal intake was 6 to 9 units. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss and study for continuous education and improvement through the feedback so that the middle-aged women can take the cereal appropriately.

  • Purpose : The number of young patients with diabetes is on the rise, and they face challenges in managing their blood sugar levels. This study aimed to investigate the effect of physical activity on blood sugar control in young and middle-aged patients with diabetes aged 19-64 years using data from the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019-2021). Methods : Blood sugar control in patients with diabetes was determined based on FBG 110 mg/㎗, and physical activity was measured using physical activity categories that considered the sum of walking, moderate intensity, and high intensity. Statistical analysis was conducted using SAS 9.4, and the Rao-Scott chi-square test was conducted to determine differences in blood sugar control based on the sociodemographic characteristics and physical activity of patients with diabetes. Complex-sample multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the effect of physical activity on blood sugar control. Results : There were statistically significant differences in blood sugar control between young and middle-aged patients with diabetes, depending on sex, age, marital status, obesity, and amount of physical activity. As a result of the complex sample simple logistic regression analysis without adjusting for variables, the non-physical activity group was found to have a higher risk of blood sugar dysregulation than the health-promoting physical activity group (OR: 2.80). Complex-sample multiple logistic regression analysis with control variables showed that the non-physical activity group had a higher risk of blood sugar dysregulation than the health-promoting physical activity group (OR: 3.70). Conclusion : Multifaceted efforts are needed to develop health intervention programs that can increase physical activity, diabetes awareness, and treatment rates, including controlling blood sugar levels and preventing complications in young and middle-aged patients with diabetes.

  • This study was conducted to identify major dietary patterns of generally healthy Korean middle-aged women and to examine associations of the dietary patterns with socio-demographic, psychological, and physical characteristics. Data were drawn from the 2001 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), which is an ongoing national surveillance system. Healthy female subjects aged 40-64 years and provided the health interview examination and food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) data were included. We conducted factor analysis based on daily mean intake frequency of 26 food groups and identified 3 major dietary patterns, healthy, convenient, and alcohol-animal. The healthy pattern was characterized by higher intakes of fish, seafood, poultry, mushroom, seaweed, vegetable, tomato, potato, and fruit, the convenient pattern by processed meat and fish, ramen, noodle and rice cake, sweet snack, egg, bread, and fast food, and the alcohol-animal pattern by alcohol, poultry, meat, and fish. The healthy pattern was significantly related with higher socio-economic status, more stable family structure, healthier mentality, and sounder status of anthropometric and biochemical variables. Those with higher factor scores for the convenience pattern were found to be younger and having higher socio-economic status, higher subjective levels of health, and lower subjective levels of worry on health. Several physical characteristics significantly improved as the levels of the convenience pattern increased. The alcohol-animal pattern was significantly associated with several socio-demographic characteristics including a low education level, a young age, a small family size, and blue-collar jobs. Public health policy makers can utilize the study findings to select prior target populations with higher needs and to tailor dietary behavioral messages to lower chronic disease risks among Korean middle-aged women.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the prevalence of impaired fasting glucose among non-diabetic middle-aged men in Korea and to identify factors related to impaired fasting glucose. The research method is a descriptive research study using data of 545 men aged 40-64 who participated in the 8th Korean Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KHANES) in the second year(2020). For data analysis, frequency and percentage, mean and standard deviation, Rao-Scott 𝛘2, t-test, and logistic regression analysis were performed using the complex sample analysis method of SPSS/WIN 23.0 program. The results of this study showed that the prevalence of impaired fasting glucose was 44.77%, and the frequency of drinking(OR=1.531, 95% CI: 1.01-2.33) and triglycerides(OR=1.002, 95% CI: 1.00-1.01) were significantly related factors for impaired fasting glucose. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program for the prevention and management of impaired fasting glucose in middle-aged men, and this program should include drinking habits and triglycerides management strategies.

  • Considering that the number of middle-aged single-person households is increasing, this study investigates dietary behaviors, nutrient intake, and mental health according to household type. Data were procured from the 2015-2019 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Totally, 5,466 participants aged 50-64 years were classified into 2 groups: a household with one member was defined as a single-person household, and households with two or more members were described as multi-person households. Single-person households comprised 10.63% of the total, with a higher average age, and lower income and economic levels than multi-person households. Compared to multi-person households, single-person households had a higher frequency of skipping breakfast, eating alone, and dining out, the moderately and severely food insecure group was more than 5 times, and nutrient intake and dietary quality were poorer. In the fully adjusted model, the odds ratios (ORs) of depressive symptoms were 2.35 times (95% CI: 1.39-3.96), and suicide ideation was 1.95 times (95% CI: 1.35-2.82) in single-person compared to multi-person households. Our results lead us to conclude that poor dietary intake in middle-aged single-person households affects the mental health, and the above factors should be considered when framing the dietary policy.

  • Objectives: Mental health issues have become a growing concern worldwide. Research has shown that regular physical activity (PA) can positively affect mental health. This study investigated the associations between PA and mental health problems (MHPs) in middle-aged Indonesians. Methods: The study utilized data from the 2018 Indonesian Basic Health Research Survey and used a cross-sectional approach. The participants included individuals aged 40-60 years who completed the 20-question Self-Reporting Questionnaire. A logistic regression was performed to analyze a sample of 263 930 data points. Results: Nearly 10.4% of the participants suffered from mental health issues. Notably, among those who did not engage in moderate and vigorous PA, a sign of MHPs was found in 12.5% of participants. Those who met World Health Organization standards for PA were less likely to experience MHPs (10.1%). This study found a significant association between PA and mental health. After adjusting for smoking, alcohol consumption, non-communicable diseases, and socio-demographic variables like age, sex, education, occupation, marital status, and residence, the connection between PA and mental health became even stronger (adjusted odds ratio, 0.81; 95% confidence interval, 0.78 to 0.85; p<0.001). Conclusions: Regular PA has been shown to affect mental health positively. Therefore, it is important to improve health education and efforts to raise awareness among middle-aged Indonesians about the importance of PA in maintaining good mental health.
