  • Automatic Train Stop (ATS) is a device that automatically stops or decelerates a train when the train exceeds the permitted speed limits or violates the signal regulations. The railway signaling system has been evolved to an automatic train control system (ATC), and is being developed into Distance-to-Go and Communication Based on Train Control (CBTC). In spite of that, the ATS system is currently being operated in Seoul Metro (line 1 and 2) and most of railway lines in Korea as well as overseas. In this study, we presents the technical methodology to prevent human errors in order to secure the safety in operation of the ATS system.

  • The automatic/driverless operation which are great important techniques in metro railway are required to increase higher safety, greater reliability, and transport capacity. To satisfy such demands, we must have the system design and testing technique for the railway system operation. These techniques are related to the onboard train control and communication systems which include TCMS(Train Control and Monitoring System), ATO(Automatic Train Operation), ATC(Automatic Train Control), and TWC(Train to Wayside Communication). These sub-systems must be interfacing with not only each others but also the signal system on the ground. We tested the train control system on Test line that has been developed on the basis of the standardized type EMU for korea railway systems. This test line which is located in Sangju, have been constructed for testing 7 & 8 line of Seoul Metro railway.

  • This research paper is to analyze the specific situation for the 157 failure cases of Seoul Metro power cable since 1990 and to consider the countermeasures. This is, also, to prevent accidents by analyzing the current state of each Line, the failure of causes, railroad tracks, installation year, opening year, and monthly failure conditions and by presenting the countermeasures. In addition, this research is to discuss the present installation situation of Seoul Metro power cable, the types of power cable, symptoms, causes and the countermeasures.

  • The study of this study is to suggest the advanced vision of LRT O&M through comparing the domestic and japanese. Currently local government attract a private capital to construct the LRT competitively. It was investigated the O&M field participation of Light Rail Transit by the Seoul metro which operates Seoul subway 1,2,3,4 lines at this time. But, according to the restricted operation experiences in domestic, Japanese companies which operates a Light Rail Transit in Japan were analysed using several statistics. It were compared with operation plan of domestic execution design phase of representative 4 lines. The analysis gives us some points in common and suggestions that are very important and prerequisite for advancing seoul metro into LRT O&M business.

Performance Analysis of Metro WDM Star Network based on An Arrayed Waveguide Grating

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of a reliable, scalable, and cost-effective switchless wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network based on an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG). The network efficiency is significantly increased by spatially reusing wavelengths and exploiting multiple free spectral ranges (FSRs) of the AWG employed in the architecture. We have analyzed the performance of this architecture by simulating in $Optsim^{TM}$ with a control channel which exploits the broadband light source, i.e., an LED. The data was successfully transmitted to a distance of 30 km without using any EDFA's in the network, with a reasonable BER of $4.0530{\times}10^{-14}$.   • This study finds out and suggests success factors for the application of RIMS project through the case study of Seoul Metro and literature survey. The successful application of RIMS needs expert knowledge and concept of BOM, standardization of maintenance planning, check lists of heavy maintenance inspection, organization structure of rolling stock maintenance offices, material management system of warehousing and the process of parts repairing between offices, connection of material ordering system, problem solving of circular spare parts administration among inspection, maintenance, and material organizational units, systemic serial number management of parts with RFID, daily closing diary connected with work process chart, and sufficient period of RIMS's test run. RIMS contributes to real time management of rolling stock maintenance, transparency of management, reliability of train operation, customer satisfaction, and management innovation.

  • The Seoul-Metro is the first city railroad corporation to operate RIMS(Rolling-stock Information Maintenance System). The development of "RIMS Project" and trial running task were started from Mar 29, 2001. Finally, this project was completed successfully on Dec 31, 2005, as integrated systems including light or heavy maintenance works in Ji-Chuk and Chang-Dong Rolling-stock Offices. After that, from 2006 to Dec 31, 2007, we promoted a this new program to other four rolling-stock offices (Su-Seo, Gun-Ja, Sin-Jeong) and the headquarter. For the duration of trial running, we developed and applied new complementary program having made up for the weak points or defects. The series of new program which were newly developed and applied are comprised of an operation management, trouble management, wheel management, heavy maintenance table automatic creation programs and ordering prediction programs to purchase goods smoothly. The Seoul-Metro have registered these programs(RIMS) to Computer Program Protection Committee. We'd like to introduce a composition of program for enhancement of a city railroad Information Systems.

Modeling and Implementation of Public Open Data in NoSQL Database

  • In order to utilize various data provided by Korea public open data portal, data should be systematically managed using a database. Since the range of open data is enormous, and the amount of data continues to increase, it is preferable to use a database capable of processing big data in order to analyze and utilize the data. This paper proposes data modeling and implementation method suitable for public data. The target data is subway related data provided by the public open data portal. Schema of the public data related to Seoul metro stations are analyzed and problems of the schema are presented. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a method to normalize and structure the subway data and model it in NoSQL database. In addition, the implementation result is shown by using MongDB which is a document-based database capable of processing big data.

Renovation plans of operation field of Seoul Metro Line 9 (서울 도시철도 9호선의 운영분야 혁신방안)

  • Seoul Metro Line 9 (SML9) is the first subway line that private capital invests in Korea. SML9 will cross Seoul, linking the Gimpo Airport to the Gangnam district (25.5km) opening in the first half of 2009. SML9 has a new model in Korea constructed by metropolitan government and private company and operated by specialized public transportation service provider. SML9 is confronted with tough environment of stagnated public transportation and strong competitor, Olympic city expressway. And SML9 is under pressure for showing high efficiency as non-governmental organization from both customers and government. Consequently SML9 must lead the maximum efficiency by using its material and human resource. It is necessary that SML9 raise a competitive power and display its ability in active collaboration with relative organization and company. Hereupon, I propose renovation plans from viewpoint of operation field of SML9, (1) efficient train scheduling regime focusing on the combination of express and local train (2) close connection of other mean of transportation and (3) effective connection convention with Airport Railroad (AREX) as the line connected directly.

  • Risk-based railway safety management has been mandatory in Korea as by relevant laws and regulations enacted since the Railway Safety Act 2004. In particular, the Railway Vehicle Safety Guidance came into effect on Jan 1, 2008 specifies the details of methodology for hazard analysis, risk assessment and safety verification and validation. Fundamentals for success of the risk-based safety management are systematic hazard identification and risk assessment by use of reasonable risk assessment criteria, but the principle of risk-based safety management has not been applied in an effective way to introduction and maintenance of railway vehicle systems because definite risk assessment criteria have not been set down for each railway system or railway network. The purpose of this study is to suggest a risk matrix development principle for risk assessment of domestic urban metro vehicles by analyses of relevant rules and railway operating environment of Korea.
