  • Railroad track consists of relatively simple structures such as rail, sleeper, ballast. Roadbed shares vertical pressure by train load which passed through rail to ballast as base that supports the track. For evaluating stress and displacement of roadbed due to the railroad load is an important role on the track as a basic data for estimation of the durability and design of the roadbed thickness. GEOTRACK program applied multi-layered theory was developed for analyzing railroad track structure. GEOTRACK program is a sort of numerical analysis program which has advantage that can analysis component of track by simple method. In this study, this program was used to preform the numerical analysis by changing track conditions and roadbed conditions such as tie, reinforced roadbed, dynamic wheel load, Resilient modulus and so on.   • According to the construction plan of Samcheok electric power complex from year 2009 to year 2020, many people are interested in this area. This national project which invests about 8.6 trillion won will have great influence to rail transport considering current depression days. Samcheok electric power complex will be the largest plan in Korea, and it is necessary to have railroad construction plan as soon as possible considering the route change of domestic coal transport and the possibility of coal transport by rail from North Korea, Russia and China after reunification of Korean peninsula. Also, Samcheok electric power complex will be located in the east area railroad route and it is important to study about this area. This study will mention about the railroad route of east sea north line and Pohang $\sim$ Samcheok line, and review the prospect and strengthening method of coal transport by railroad according to the construction of Samcheok electric power complex.

  • Recently the role of a railroad is emphasized as the imprortant part for growth for the low carbon green growth and the social consensus about the railroad investment is actively progressed. The various social economic value in which the travel demand change over of the environment-friendly railroad system can bring becomes with public debate as much as a discussion is not any more necessary. In this research, the influence that it recognized that the travel time improvement by the high speed rail was the most important element among many method that it can increase the railroad use efficiency in which it connects the interregional major cities and the railway travel time improvement reaches to the rate of railway and road travel time, and the environment like the carbon emission quantity was comprehensively inquired.

  • Recently, the SCP(Steel Confined Prestressed concrete) composite girders are developed to improve the characteristic such as displacement, vibration, and heavy dead load due to influence of self weight, and inefficiency of steel section of exiting girder-type railroad bridges. It is needed to verify the economical effciency of newly developed SCP composite girder bridge compared with the conventional girder-type bridges. In this paper, LCC analysis for alternative railroad bridges Is performed and its technique based on level of risk(probability of failure) is suggested. From the results, it may be stated that SCP composite girder bridge is more economical than a conventional one.

  • The Korean high speed railroad is scheduled to open in 2004. For railroad-based integrated transfer system, it is essential to develop the intermodal information system for easy transfer to other travel modes. The understanding of mode choices by KTX passengers is crucial for the intermodal transportation planning. Recent development of Intelligent Transportation Systems(ITS) made it possible for railroad users to access the transportation information in a cabin or waiting areas at the station. Development of intermodal transportation information system will influence the relative demand for traveling by train from competing other transportation modes. The research is focused on a general overview of the ITS with an emphasis on intermodal transportation information system.

  • The objective of this study is to describe the influence of railway and railway station on the change of city structure in Korea in the early 20th century. In the 1900s, railway was constructed in Japanese concessions and in new pore cities such as Incheon, Busan, and Wonsan. In the 1920s, railroad construction became related with the cities, which could produce the corps. In the 1930s, railroad also became related to the colonial industrial cities. Traditional city structure was then completely changed because new city structure was focused on not Seoul but Japan or harbors towards Japan. So Korean cities, which were netted by railway, had become the subsystem of Japan in the early 20th century. Korean cities have developed on the basis of this system until 1945. For example, the twelve main cities were chosen through the relationship with Japanese life, and the provincial office governments moved near railroad stations. However nowadays, these cities have possibilities of being international cities, such as Incheon and Busan, because of the extroversion of these cities.

  • Railway wheels and axles are the most critical parts of the railway rolling stock. The wheel carry axle loads and guide the vehicles on the track. Therefore, the contact surface of wheel are subjected to wear and fatigue process. The wheel damage can be divided into three types; wear, contact fatigue failure and thermal crack due to braking. Therefore, in the contact surface between the wheel and the rail, the materials are heat treated to have a specific hardness. The manufacturing quality of the wheel have a considerable influence on the formation of tread wear and damage. Also, the residual stress on wheel is formed during the manufacturing process is one of the main sources of the damage. In this paper, the mechanical characteristic and the residual stress according to wheel material have been evaluated by applying finite element analysis and conducting mechanical tests.

  • This study examined the running dynamic characteristics of a hybrid type wheel-rail high speed train, in which the propulsion method of maglev is applied. A wheel-rail high speed train propelled by a superconducting linear synchronous motor (SC-LSM) is expected to be superior to a maglev train regarding economical and interoperable aspects, still having powerful thrust force as maglev. In this paper, regarding the two methods of applying the SC-LSM to an existing wheel-rail train, to investigate the influences of SC-LSM propulsion on the dynamic characteristics of wheel-rail high speed train, the dynamic model of train including interaction between the rotor and stator of SC-LSM is established. Through the simulation using the model, the influence of the interaction between the rotor and stator of SC-LSM on stability, ride comfort and the effect of guideway irregularity are investigated.
