Synthesis, Cure Behavior, and Rheological Properties of Fluorine-Containing Epoxy Resins (불소함유 에폭시 수지의 합성, 경화 거동 및 유변학적 특성)

  • The fluorine-containing epoxy resin, 2-trifluorotoluene diglycidylether (FER) was prepared by reaction of 2-chloro-${\alpha}$,${\alpha}$,${\alpha}$-trifluorotoluene with glycerol diglycidylether in the presence of pyridine catalyst. Curing behavior of FER/DDM system was investigated using dynamic and isothermal DSC. Cure activation energy (Ea) was determined by Flynn-Wall-Ozawa's equation. The rheological properties of FER/DDM system were studied under isothermal condition using a rheometer. Cross-linking activation energy (Ec) was determined from the Arrhenius equation based on gel time and curing temperature. As a result, the chemical structure of FER was confirmed by FT-IR, $\^$13/C NMR, and $\^$19/F NMR spectroscopy. The cure activation energy of FER/DDM system was 55.4 kJ/mol and conversion and conversion rate were increased with the curing temperature. The cross-linking activation energy of FER/DDM system was 41.6 kJ/mol and gel time was decreased with the curing temperature.

  • The research of science and engineering needs the latest information from internet resources. But it is a complex and repeated procedure to search and filter web documents from the huge Internet resources. In this paper, we propose the PREA system, which can organize the research paper databases and search World Wide Web documents that the user is interested in. It observes the usage of the local Paper databases and presented web documents and then constructs a profile intelligently. However, to make a profile, we used the modified spreading activation network(MSAN) so that the PREA can search and filter web documents by semantic meaning of user's interest in realtime. The system constructed in multi-agents manner that can cooperate together effectively. The results show the effectiveness of our system to search web documents compared with a commercial search engine.

  • Railroad is the environment-friendly green growth transportation system and it needs connection and transfer system. Connection system can be a national core project centered in main railroad stations. If there is no transfer system for customers, it's very difficult to achieve green growth and the activation service for public transportation. This study will introduce the establishment of connection & transfer system and the activation methods between main stations in South Gyeongsang area (Changwon, North-Changwon, and Masan) and other transportation modes. These methods will be the model for connection & transfer system of main stations, and will be applied to adopt methods for customers' convenience of railroad public transportation.

  • Nowadays, evaluation of amounts and distributions of radioactive waste is an important preparatory step in the process of nuclear reactor decommissioning. For tentative estimation of radioactive waste, a cell-based rigorous 2 step (R2S) method usually is used; however, a poor resolution caused by the averaged flux and spectrum in a cell is still a great challenge because of leading to underestimated or overestimated results. To overcome the poor resolution, several systems were introduced. Neither system, however, provides any function for evaluation of radioactive waste amount and distribution. Thus, it is additionally required to classify radioactive waste based on the results of activation calculation. In this study, the advanced R2S (AR2S) system was developed. To verify the performance of the system, its results for a verification problem were compared with those of the cell-based R2S method. The results showed good agreement, which is to say, within 2.0% relative error. Also, several characteristics of fine/coarse mesh were analyzed. To demonstrate the performance of the AR2S system, the radioactive waste from the Japan Power Demonstration Reactor (JPDR) was estimated, and the result indicated a high-resolution distribution. Therefore, it is expected that the AR2S system will prove useful for precise evaluation of radioactive waste.

A Study on Effect to Complement Activation and Pulmonary Leukostasis During Cardiopulmonary bypass: Comparison of Bubble Oxygenator and Membrane Oxygenator (체외순환이 보체활성화화 백혈구의 폐내 정체에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • From December 1993 to April 1994, to investigate complement activation and pulmonary leukostasis, thirty adult patients were studied during cardiopulmonary bypass[CPB for cardiac surgery in Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery, Pusan Paik Hospital, Inje University. Total patients were divided into group I and II according to the purpose of study ; Group I was 15 patients undergoing CPB with bubble oxygenator, Group II was 15 patients undergoing CPB with membrane oxygenator. The results of study were summarized as follows.1. The decrease of C3 and C4 levels were observed within few minutes of beginning of CPB in all patients[P<0.05 , and this decrease was proved to be due to complement activation, not by the influence of hemodilution.2. In the correlation between the change of C3 and C4, group I showed linear correlation each other suggesting complement activation occurred through the classical pathway, group II showed a correlation at only partial sampling times suggesting complement activation via both classical and alternative pathway, however there was no significant statistical difference at the change of C3 and C4 concentrations in two groups[P>0.05 .3. After switching to partial CPB, a few difference between right atrial and left atrial WBC count was observed, but statistically not significant and median cell count difference between group I and II was not significant, too [P>0.05 . With the above result, we concluded that CPB itself contributes to the activation of complement system, but bubble oxygenator does not activate always complement system more than membrane oxygenator.

Oxidation Kinetics of Carbon Fibers

  • Isotropic pitch based carbon fibers were exposed to isothermal oxidation in carbon dioxide gas to study the activation kinetics under the temperature of 800~$1100^{\circ}C$. The kinetic equation $f=1-{\exp}(-at^b)$ was introduced and the constant b was obtained in the range of 0.92~1.25. It was shown that the activated carbon fiber shows the highly specific surface area (SSA) when the constant b comes close to 1. The activation kinetics were evaluated by the reaction-controlling regime (RCR) according to changes of the apparent activation energy with changes of the conversion. It was observed that the activation energies increase from 47.6 to 51.2 kcal/mole with the conversion increasing from 0.2 to 0.8. It was found that the pores of the activated carbon fiber under the chemical reaction were developed well through the fiber.

Predictors of massive transfusion protocols activation in patients with trauma in Korea: a systematic review

  • Purpose: Massive transfusion protocols (MTPs) implementation improves clinical outcomes of the patient's resuscitation with hemorrhagic trauma. Various predictive scoring system have been used and studied worldwide to improve clinical decision. However, such research has not yet been studied in Korea. This systematic review aimed to assess the predictors of MTPs activation in patients with trauma in Korea. Methods: The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Research Information Sharing Service databases, KoreaMed, and KMbase were searched from November 2022. All studies conducted in Korea that utilized predictors of MTPs activation in adult patients with trauma were included. Results: Ten articles were eligible for analysis, and the predictors were assessed. Clinical assessments such as systolic and diastolic blood pressure, shock index (SI), prehospital modified SI, modified early warning system (MEWS) and reverse SI multiplied by the Glasgow Coma Scale (rSIG) were used. Laboratory values such as lactate level, fibrinogen degradation product/fibrinogen ratio, and rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) were used. Imaging examinations such as pelvic bleeding score were used as predictors of MTPs activation. Conclusions: Our systematic review identified predictors of MTPs activation in patients with trauma in Korea; predictions were performed using tools that requires clinical assessments, laboratory values or imaging examinations only. Among them, ROTEM, rSIG, MEWS, SI, and lactate level showed good effects for predictions of MTPs activation. The application of predictors for MTP's activation should be individualized based on hospital resource and skill set, also should be performed as a clinical decision supporting tools.

The Effect of Arm·Leg Flexion Patterns of PNF on Muscle Activation of Contralateral Lower Extremity (고유수용성신경근촉진법 팔·다리 굽힘패턴이 반대측 다리의 근활성도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of arm leg flexion patterns of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation on the muscle activation of the contralateral lower extremity. Methods: In this study, Electromyogram MP150(Biopac system, USA) was applied to 20 healthy male subjects. Unilateral arm flexion- abduction- external rotation pattern and Unilateral leg flexion- adduction- external rotation with knee flexion pattern were applied within mid range of the supine position for measurement. The muscle activation of vastus lateralis, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius(medialis) muscle of the contralateral lower extremity were compared and analyzed during the applications. Results: The results of this study were summarized as follows: There was a statistically significant difference in the muscle activation of vastus lateralis and biceps femoris between the arm and leg patterns(P<0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in the muscle activation of gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior between the arm and leg patterns(P<0.05). Conclusion: contralateral vastus lateralis, biceps femoris, gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior muscles show the higher muscle activation in the leg pattern than one in the arm pattern.

Pore Structure Characterization of Poly(vinylidene chloride)-Derived Nanoporous Carbons

  • Poly(vinylidene chloride) (PVDC)-derived nanoporous carbons were prepared by various activation methods: heat-treatment under an inert atmosphere, steam activation, and potassium hydroxide (KOH) activation at 873, 1073, and 1273 K. The pore structures of PVDC-derived nanoporous carbons were characterized by the $N_2$ adsorption technique at 77 K. Heat treatment in an inert atmosphere increased the specific surface area and micropore volume with elevating temperature, while the average micropore width near 0.65 nm was not significantly changed, reflecting the characteristic pore structure of ultramicroporous carbon. Steam activation for PVDC at 873 and 1073 K also yielded ultramicroporosity. On the other hand, the steam activated sample at 1273 K had a wider average micropore width of 1.48 nm, correlating with a supermicropore. The KOH activation increased the micropore volume with elevating temperature, which is accompanied by enlargement of the average micropore width from 0.67 to 1.12 nm. The average pore widths of KOH-activated samples were strongly governed by the activation temperature. We expect that these approaches can be utilized to simply control the porosity of PVDC-derived nanoporous carbons.

Activation of Fibrinolytic System during Open Heart Surgery (개심술중 섬유소융해계의 활성화에 관한 연구)

  • Hemorrhagic tendency observed in open heart surgery patients has been attributed, among other causes, to increased fibrinolytic activity during extracorporeal circulation. But the exact mechanism of enhanced fibrinolytic activity which occurs during extracorporeal circulation is still unknown. So, we studied and compared the changes of parameters of fibrinolytic and protein C system according to time obtained from the plasma of 31 adult open heart surgery patients[EGG group] and 10 adult general thoracic surgery patients[control group], in order to confirm the hypothesis that the activated protein C system might affect the fibrinolytic system during extracorporeal circulation. In ECC group, the nature of the enhanced fibrinolytic activity that evolved during extracorporeal circulation was characterized by significant increase in fibrin degradation products[P < 0.01] and significant decrease in plasminogen and alpha2-antiplasmin[P < 0.05, P < 0.01] in spite of adequate amount of heparin administration. These changes were most pronounced in the early phase of extracorporeal circulation and normalized after termination of extracorporeal circulation. The results of these observations were the same after volume correction with the value of hematocrit. The change of volume corrected protein C ratio during extracorporeal circulation revealed similar pattern to those of plasminogen and alpha2-antiplasmin [P < 0.01], but volume corrected ratio of free protein S showed significant increase after the commencement of extracorporeal circulation then decreased after extracorporeal circulation. Although the above mentioned changes occur similarly in both bubble type oxygenator-used and membrane oxygenator-used patients groups, but the degree of decrease was more severe in membrane oxygenator-used patients group [P < 0.01] and showed much slower recovery to reach to the preextracorporeal circulation level. These results confirm the hypothesis that the enhanced fibrinolysis during extracorporeal circulation might be caused by the activation of protein C system and the activation is possibly linked to the appearance of thrombin from contact activation of blood after wide exposure to the synthetic surfaces of extracorporeal circuit.
