  • In this paper, two classes of functions, involving a parameter and the classical Euler gamma function, and two functions, involving the classical Euler gamma function, are verified to be logarithmically completely monotonic in $(-\frac{1}{2},\infty)$ or $(0,\infty)$; some inequalities involving the classical Euler gamma function are deduced and compared with those originating from certain problems of traffic flow, due to J. Wendel and A. Laforgia, and relating to the well known Stirling's formula.

  • The model of Poisson's ratio of the fruits was developed on the basis that the cylindrical fruits specimen became the barrel shape when it was being compressed. The model of the corrected creep compliance of the fruits was developed under considering the developed model of Poisson's ratio. Both of the Poisson's ratio and the corrected creep compliance of the samples showed the nonlinear viscoelastic behavior. Those models were a similar form, but their coefficients of the model were different, and these behaviors of the samples were well described by the nonlinear model as a function of the initial stress and time. Effects of storage condition and period on the Poisson's ratio of the samples were investigated, and comparisons between the corrected and the uncorrected creep compliance of the samples were made.

  • The effects of combustion parameters on the characteristics of a steam-methane reformer. The reformer system was numerically simulated using a simplified two-dimensional axisymmetric model domain with an appropriate user-defined function. The fuel ratio, defined as the ratio of methane flow rate in the combustor to that in the reactor, was varied from 20 to 80%. The equivalence ratio was changed from 0.5 to 1.0. The results indicated that as the fuel ratio increased, the production rates of hydrogen and carbon monoxide increased, although their rates of increase diminished. In fact, at the highest heat supply rates, hydrogen production was actually slightly decreased. Simulations showed that equivalence ratio of 0.7 yielded the highest steam-methane mixture temperature despite a 43% higher air flow rate than the stoichiometric flow rate. This means that the production of hydrogen and carbon monoxide can be increased by adjusting the equivalence ratio, especially when the heat supply is insufficient.

  • The prediction model is proposed to estimate the variation of compressive strength of fly ash concrete with aging. After analyzing the experimental result with the model, the regression results are presented according to fly ash replacement content and water/cement ratio. Based on the regression results, the influence of fly ash replacement content and water/cement ratio on apparent activation energy was investigated. According to the analysis, the model provides a good estimate of compressive strength development of fly ash concrete with aging. As the fly ash replacement content increases, the limiting relative compressive strength and initial apparent activation energy become greater. The concrete with water/cement ratio smaller than 0.40 shows that the limiting relative compressive strength and apparent activation energy are nearly constant according to water/cement ratio. But, the concrete with water/cement ratio greater than 0.40 has the increasing limiting relative compressive strength and apparent activation energy with increasing water/cement ratio.

  • The effects of the cation-to-anion resin ratio and bed depth on ion exchange performance of mixed-bed were studied at ultralow solution concentration. Breakthrough curves were experimentally obtained for NaCI solution as functions of resin ratio and bed depth. The bed depth affects the pattern of the sodium breakthrough curve but not the chloride breakthrough curve in beds because of the selectivity difference. Resin selectivity determines the shape of breakthrough curves, Some sodium and chloride breakthrough curves crossed at a point as a function of resin ratio. The lower cation-to-anion resin ratio showed the higher effluent concentration or treated volume of the crossover point regardless of the total resin weight.

  • In-situ soil remediation mechanism through the vertical drains (VDs) is analyzed with numerical model as the error and complementary error function. Results from in-situ test and analysis indicate that the contaminant concentration ratio as initial one ( C/$C_0$) increases as the radius ratio ( r/R) increases from the injection well, and also increases as the depth ratio ( z/ H) increases from the top of contaminated area. The elapse time needed to attain $50\%$ and $90\%$ clean up level ($ t_{50},\;t_{90}$) increases as the radius ratio ( r/R) and the depth ratio ( z/ H) increase. As above results, the procedure of soil flushing in contaminated area using vertical drains makes progress from the top of injection well to the bottom of extraction well.

  • The vowel/consonant ratio is a well-known cue for the voicing of postvocalic consonants. This study investigates how this ratio changes as a function of speaking rate. Seven speakers of North American English read sentences containing target monosyllabic words that contrasted in coda voicing at three different speaking rates. Duration measures were taken for the voice onset time (VOT) of the onset consonant, the vowel, and the coda. The results show that the durations of the onset VOT and vowel are longer before voiced codas, and that the durations of all segments increase monotonically as speaking rate decreases. Importantly, the vowel/consonant ratio, a primary acoustic cue for coda voicing, was found to pattern asymmetrically for voiced and voiceless codas; it increases for voiced codas but decreases for voiceless codas with the decrease in speaking rate. This finding suggests that there is no stable ratio in the duration of preconsonantal vowels that is maintained in different speaking styles.

  • Inscriptions are integral parts of the current science textbooks, and become medium that makes sense of scientific concepts effectively. This study analyzed the inscriptions from five science textbooks at the secondary level in terms of its type, function, and structures. Analyzing types of inscriptions resulted that the ratio of frequently used photographs and illustrations were much higher than that of graphs and tables used. In case of function analysis, illustrative and complementary functions were dominant in terms of frequency and ratio, whereas explanatory, decorative and inquisitive functions were relatively rare. Inscriptions of single structure was much more than multiple structure. Multiple structure of pair and series were mainly used for representing contrast and sequence, respectively. The proportion of inscriptions in type, function and structure across the textbooks was significantly different. Based on the results, it was suggested that semiotic study about the function and the structure of inscriptions need to be carried out in earth science area to better understand the pedagogical implications of inscriptions in school science.

  • In this paper the effect of stress ratio on the fatigue crack growth rate of aluminum alloy A5083-O was examined. The fatigue tests were carried out using CCT (center cracked tension) specimens and CT(compact tension) specimens which were subjected to 0.5 and -1.0 stress ratio respectively. The obtained results are as follows; 1) The $\DeltaK_{th}$ as the function of stress ratio R was introduced in evaluating the fatigue crack growth rate of A5083-O. 2) A new model evaluating the effect of stress ratio on the fatigue crack growth rate was developed over the region of low and high propagation rate.

  • The estimation of odds ratio and corresponding confidence intervals for case-control data have been done by traditional generalized linear models which assumed that the logarithm of odds ratio is linearly related to risk factors. We adapt a lower-dimensional approximation of Gu and Kim (2002) to provide a faster computation in nonparametric method for the estimation of odds ratio by allowing flexibility of the estimating function and its Bayesian confidence interval under the Bayes model for the lower-dimensional approximations. Simulation studies showed that taking larger samples with the lower-dimensional approximations help to improve the smoothing spline estimates of odds ratio in this settings. The proposed method can be used to analyze case-control data in medical studies.
