  • Phytoliths, silica microfossil that produced within and between cells and tissues of plants are especially yielded in Gramineae with many different forms and can attribute to the reconstruction of climatic and environmental changes and agriculture activity of the Quaternary. The phytoliths in soil can remain for long periods of time, because of strong resistance to physical and chemical weathering. The spatial range of study is too small due to deposition of phytoliths directly to the soil. There are difficulties of phytoliths identification because of multiplicity and redundancy, so far uniform and exact classification scheme has not been adopted. Therefore we attempted phytolith classification system applied to Korea. The paleoenvironmental reconstruction research using phytholith are applicated in many parts of studies. Also high-resolution paleoclimatic reconstruction expected to be possible using phytolith indices of Iph and Ic as well as climatic indicator of phytolith morphology.

  • Using industrial wastes and construction and demolition (C&D) wastes is potentially advantageous for concrete production in terms of sustainability improvement. In this paper, a sustainable Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) made with industrial wastes and C&D wastes was proposed by considerably replacing natural counterparts with recycled coarse aggregates (RCAs) and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) (i.e., Fly ash (FA), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and silica fume (SF)). A total of 12 SCC mixes with various RCAs and different combination SCMs were prepared, which comprise binary, ternary and quaternary mixes. The mechanical properties in terms of compressive strength and static elasticity modulus of recycled aggregates (RA-SCC) mixes were determined and analyzed. Microstructural study was implemented to analyze the reason of improvement on mechanical properties. By means of life cycle assessment (LCA) method, the environmental impacts of RA-SCC with various RCAs and SCMs were quantified, analyzed and compared in the system boundary of "cradle-to-gate". In addition, the comparison of LCA results with respect to mechanical properties was conducted. The results demonstrate that the addition of proposed combination SCMs leads to significant improvement in mechanical properties of quaternary RA-SCC mixes with FA, GGBS and SF. Furthermore, quaternary RA-SCC mixes emit lowest environmental burdens without compromising mechanical properties. Thus, using the combination of FA, GGBS and SF as cement substitution to manufacture RA-SCC significantly improves the sustainability of SCC by minimizing the depletion of cement and non-renewable natural resources.

  • When multiple reactions of quaternary mixtures take place in a reactive distillation column, the behavior of composition trajectory is analyzed by a visual-aided method. By adding additional vectors of multiple reactions and visualizing them in composition space, the composition of each component and extent of each reaction on an arbitrary stage can be easily estimated in terms of the composition trajectory and reaction cascade difference points. Moreover, for a given operating conditions, the number of total stages and position of optimum reaction zone can be determined by the visual-aided method. In this study, ethylene glycol synthesis with a side reaction is taken as an example and analyzed by the proposed graphical method. Through this method, the quaternary reactive distillation with multiple reactions can be analyzed without numerous experiments and simulations.

  • A bedrock river is a channel in which bedrock is exposed along the channel bed or walls for at least approximately half of its length. In some case, a continuous alluvial veneer may be present, but this is completely mobilized during floods. From the point of long term landscape evolution during the Quaternary, the bedrock channel determines local base level and the lowering rate of bedrock channels controls the rate of erosion and transport processes and forms on the adjacent hillslopes. In this review, various erosional processes in bedrock river channels are classified and discussed. Especially, theoretical and numerical models on channel bed abrasion with bed load sediment particles are introduced and discussed.

  • In Korean peninsula as well as in Western European Countries, we can find, reddish bands in sandy deposits of various origin. These bands (called "$B_t$ Band"), composed of fine material, are regularly intervalled and parallel to topography. This study is tring to elucidate their origin and associated milieux, with a group of methods and techniques (field survey, micromorphological analysis, granulometry, X-ray diffractometry of clay minerals...). $B_t$ Bands are not sedimentological origin. They were formed by superposition of two type accumulations in the sandy profile, triggered by different mechanisms: 1) accumulation in banded form, concerning silty heterometric material and micas, oweing to cryophoretic forces operating in course of deep freezing of sandy deposits: 2) illuviation of ferrugineous clays in the precedants bands, migrated in chelate state by soil water. The first processes are associated with very cold and humid climate in which freeze soil more than 3m in depth. The second, cold and humid climate in which podzolizattion is generalized. In case of South Korea and Western Europe, these two types of climates are not present circumstance, but Recent Quaternary (probably since the Wurm).the Wurm).

  • Silver-needle shaped crystals of $KLa_2Sb_3S_9$ from $K_2S_x$ flux and $KSm_2Sb_3Se_8$ from NaCl/KCl flux reactions were obtained and their crystal structures were determined by the single crystal X-ray diffraction method. $KLa_2Sb_3S_9$ crystallizes in the orthorhombic noncentrosymmetric space group $P2_12_12_1$ (No.19) with a unit cell of a = 4.220(3) ${\AA}$, b = 24.145(2) ${\AA}$, c = 14.757(5) ${\AA}$ and Z = 4. $KSm_2Sb_3Se_8$ crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma (No.62) with a unit cell of a = 16.719(3) ${\AA}$, b = 4.1236(8) ${\AA}$, c = 22.151(4) ${\AA}$ and Z = 4. Both structures have three-dimensional tunnel frameworks filled with $K^+$ ions. $KSm_2Sb_3Se_8$ is an ordered version of $ALn_{1{\pm}X}B_i{4{\pm}X}S_8$, and it is made up of NaCl-type and $Gd_2S_3$-type fragments. $KLa_2Sb_3S_9$ also contains building fragments similar to those of $KSm_2Sb_3Se_8$, however, there are chalcogen-chalcogen bonds in the $Gd_2S_3$-type fragment. The formula of $KLa_2Sb_3S_9$ can be described as $(K^+ )(La^{3+})_2(Sb^{3+})^3(S^{2-})_7(S_2^{2-})$.

  • Maleic anhydride (MA) modified ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (MEPDM) was pre-pared from solution polymerization. MEPDM-g-PST copolymer was prepared by melt polymerization of male ate d EPDM and quaternary ammonium silyl polydimethylsiloxane -7,7,8,8- tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) adduct (PST) in internal mixer and MEPDM-g-PST/HDPE/CB (MPEC) was prepared by com-pounding HDPE, MEPDM-g-PST copolymer and carbon black (CB, 5, 10, 15, and 20 phr), and HDPE/ CB (PEC) by compounding HDPE and CB (5, 10, 15, and 20 phr), respectively. The structure of MEPDM-g-PST copolymer was confirmed by measuring the FTIR. The maximum grafting ratio of MA onto EPDM was 2.35%. The thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were measured and dispersion characteristics of CB in matrix show that CB in MPEC was better dispersed than that in PEC composite.

  • XRF, XRD, EPMA have been used to investigate microstructures and mineralogical changes caused by the faulting and fluids associated with faulting in the Quaternary fault gouge zones at the Sangchon, Ipsil and Wangsan faults located at the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. The chemical compositions of faulted rocks and protoliths analyzed by XRF show that the fault gouges are relatively enriched in TiO$_2$, P$_2$O$_{5}$, MgO, and Fe$_2$O$_3$) compared with protoliths, indicating that the fluids associated with faulting were highly activated. XRD results show that the fault gouges predominantly consist of quartz, feldspar, calcite and clay minerals. Clay minerals formed in the gouge zones are mainly composed of smectite characterized by a dioctahedral sheet. Based on EPMA analyses various kinds of sulfide, carbonate, phosphate minerals were identified in the gouge zones and protoliths. Xenotime of grey fault gouge of the Sangchon fault and sulfide minerals of contact andesitic rock of Ipsil fault and contact grey andesitic rock of Wangsan fault were probably formed by inflow of hydrothermal solution associated with faulting prior to the Quaternary. Carbonate minerals of contact andesitic rock and gouge zone of the Ipsil fault were formed by inflow of fluid associated with faulting prior to the Quaternary. They are heavily fractured and have reaction rim on their edge, indicating that faultings and inflow of fluids were highly activated after carbonate minerals were formed. Calcites of Wangsan fault seemed to be formed in syntectonic or posttectonic Quaternary faulting.g.

  • In this study, a surface geological survey was first conducted to investigate aggregate resources in the Yeongam area of Jeollanam-do, and a drilling survey was conducted in the lower part of the surface, which was difficult to identify through a surface geological survey, to determine the spatial distribution of aggregates. Drilling sites were selected considering the topographical development and Quaternary alluvium characteristics of the study area, and river aggregate drilling surveys were conducted at a total of 5 points and land aggregate drilling surveys were conducted at a total of 28 points. Borehole core sediments were classified into seven sedimentary units to determine whether they could be used as aggregates, and optically stimulated luminescence dating was performed on representative boreholes to measure the depositional period for each sedimentary unit. As a result of the study, most of the Yeongam area had a very wide river basin, so it was estimated that there would be a large amount of aggregate, but the amount of aggregate was evaluated to be very small compared to other cities and counties. Most of the unconsolidated sedimentary layers in the Yeongam area are composed of blue-grey marine clay with a vertical thickness of more than 10 m. The sand-gravel layer corresponding to the aggregate section is distributed in the lower part of the marine clay, thinly covering the bedrock weathering zone. This is because the amount of aggregates themselves is small and most of the aggregates are distributed at a depth of 10 m below the surface, which is currently difficult to develop, so the possibility of developing aggregates is evaluated to be very low. As a result of dating, it can be seen that the blue-grey marine clay layer is an intertidal sedimentary layer formed as the sea level rose rapidly about 10,000 years ago. The deposition process continued from 10,000 years ago to the present, and as a result, a very thick clay layer was deposited. This clay layer was formed very dominantly for about 6,000 to 8,000 years, and the sand-gravel layer in the section where aggregates deposited in the Pleistocene period can exist was measured to have been deposited at about 13.0 to 19.0 ka, and about 50 ka, showing that it was deposited as paleo-fluvial deposits before the marine transgression process.
