  • From the flood of various informations and images, the producer and the consumer pursue a new method of images constantly. Especially the computer graphic field has affected the images greatly, and has changed the paradigm of images. The 3D animation which is a part of the computer graphics has two general trends(namely the photorealistic rendering and the non-photorealistic rendering) as to the final image. This study overviews the photorealistic rendering and the non-photorealistic rendering by analyzing the technical side and the artistic side. Also this study presents the applicable scope and the advanced directions of the NPR.

  • The rapid development of 3D computer graphics makes traditional cell-animations expressed by several digital techniques and makes traditional cell-animations expand their own area through several continuous tries. There are two types in rendering method. The one is Photorealistic rendering to realize accurate images like photos and the other is Non-photorealistic rendering to realize human's flair and artistry. This paper examines applications of cartoon rendering techniques among several Non-photorealistic rendering techniques. This paper analyzes production cases and examines features of cartoon rendering techniques in the latest movies, games and advertisements of image contents. And this paper will be able to help making more sensual, familiar and in-depth products, as understanding applications, merits and demerits of the latest cartoon rendering techniques through these investigations.

  • When rendering both three-dimensional objects and photo images together, the non-photorealistic rendering results are in visual discord since the two contents have their own independent color distributions. This paper proposes a non-photorealistic rendering technique which renders both three-dimensional objects and photo images such as cartoons and sketches. The proposed technique computes the color distribution property of the photo images and reduces the number of colors of both photo images and 3D objects. NPR is performed based on the reduced colormaps and edge features. To enhance the natural scene presentation, the image region segmentation process is preferred when extracting and applying colormaps. However, the image segmentation technique needs a lot of computational operations. It takes a long time for non-photorealistic rendering for large size frames. To speed up the time-consuming segmentation procedure, we use GPGPU for the parallel computing using the GPU. As a result, we significantly improve the execution speed of the algorithm.

  • Recently, development of mobile service and increased demand for mobile device make mobile environment noticeable in computer graphics. Especially demand for 3D graphic services in mobile devices is steadily increased. However up to the present non-photorealistic rendering is mainly studied in desktop platform. In the result, existing research were designed for desktop computers and are not well-suited for mobile devices. Thus, there is a growing needs for processing techniques that provide the ability to render 3D non-photorealistic graphics through mobile devices. In this paper, we discuss processing techniques for non-photorealistic rendering that are especially cartoon shading and rendering in mobile devices. Through the result of this research, it is expected that silhouette edge rendering for mobile display environment and preprocessing file technique for shading. The efficiency of 3D mobile graphic service like 3D model in cartoon style is increased by using proposed preprocessing file and rendering pipeline. Our work can provide mobile cartoon rendering results and various mobile contents to users.

  • Rapidly changing 3D rendering technology is expanding its fields of display fast towards Non-Photorealistic Rendering beyond Photorealistic Rendering. It is now attainable to realize conventional 2D visual animated cartoons with 3D animation technology. It is not complex to create two shades of color or more with the rendered outcomes, made by Toon-Shading, of 3D total packaging animation Maya with black outlines brought through the process of 2D animation. It the reality of 3D animation being one of the prevalent mechanisms of animated films, it is valuable for familiarized animated cartoons to be realized by the technology of 3D animation. Thus, I hope to help in many ways create more effective 3D cartoon animation production process by optimized Toon-Shading attributes method and technology in this research.

  • In this paper, we present a non-photorealistic rendering technique that automatically delivers a stylized abstraction of a photograph with DoF(Depth of field). Our approach is a new filtering method that efficiently classifies DoF regions using RGB channels and automatically adjusts the color abstraction and extracted line quality based on this classification. This DoF-based filtering is simple, fast, and easy to implement and significantly improves the abstraction performance in terms of feature enhancement and stylization.

  • Animation is completed in accordance with the original planning of visual direction in the process of post-production. Especially, a variety of visualization skills to meet the planning idea are directed in editing and compositing processes such as rendering and shading in the production of 3D animation. Therefore, the studies how to implement these visual effects have been conducted since the emergence of the animation. The rendering method which appears in the recent animations so often is the effect of 2D animation style although it is applied by 3D technique. 3D animation can be classified as two types including photo realistic and non-photo realistic renderings. The former is to render the images realistically while the latter is to highlight the formative effect with analogue style free from the realism of the photographs. Visual effect of 2D animation is non-realistic, that is, non-photo realistic rendering. The animations produced by this method have the depth of 3D animation expression in terms of space and animating, and can direct the viewer-friendly analogue style visuals, which are widely used as a post-production effect. Hence in this study, we selected a short animation, 'Paperman,' one of Disney's animations, produced by cartoon rendering method which belongs to the class of non-photo rendering technique in 3D graphics, as our subject. We analyzed their techniques and visual effects of the scenes expressed by cartoon rendering method so as to understand whether they meet the original direction idea with the composition work. In addition, we expect further developments of post-production methods, exceeding the limit of graphic expression in alignment with the trend that has become more various in the types and genres of non-photo rendering.

  • The research of computer graphics is divided into two parts of photorealistic rendering and non-photorealistic rendering. The purpose of non-photo realistic rendering is to make image like cartoon, water-color, hatching etc. In this paper, we study for real-time hatching rendering and shadow techniques and we combine two techniques to make real-time hatching shadow. In shadow techniques we apply projected texture shadow to hatching rendering. Eventually, we introduce natural real-time hatching shadow through comparison and analysis.

  • The production of hyper-realistic digital rendering images has been available due to radical improvements of recent digital rendering and CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) software technologies. The photorealism of digital architectural rendering images requires further studies and discussions in that architectural visualization becomes a foundation of other fields using digital rendering technology, such as movies, games, and VR industry. The principles for achieving photorealism on digital architectural rendering images were re-defined and detailed elements were analyzed through theoretical analysis of the former studies. Four principles were drawn from the architectural rendering images produced by newly-developed technologies: physically-accurate lighting calculations, accurate object geometry representation, realistic material and texture, and characteristics of photography. The sub-elements of those four principles are categorized into either essential or selective for photorealistic imagery and the randomness of the selective elements could explain the variety of photorealistic architectural rendering styles.

  • In this paper, an efficient method is proposed to produce photorealistic images of woven fabrics without empirical data such as the measured BRDFs(bidirectional reflectance distribution functions). The proposed method is applicable both to ray tracer based offline renderers and to realtime applications such as games. The proposed method models the reflectance properties of woven fabric with alternating anisotropy and deformed MDF(microfacet distribution function). The procedural modeling of the yarn structure effectively and efficiently reproduces plausible rendering of woven fabric. The experimental results show the proposed method can be successfully applied to photorealistic rendering of diverse woven fabric materials even in interactive applications.
