Coumarin Glycosides from the Roots of Angelica dahurica

  • From the roots of Angelica dahurica Bentham et Hooker (Umbelliferae), five coumarin glucosides together with adenosine have been isolated and identified as nodakenin, 3'-hydroxymarmesinin, tert-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranosyl-byakangelicin, sec-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranosyl-byakangelicin and scopolin. This is the first report of the occurrence of these compounds in this plant.

  • A cytotoxic coumarin against L1210 cell was isolated from the unripe fruit of Poncirus trifoliata ($ED_{5}$) = 10.2 $\mu$ g/ml. Its structure was identified as aurapten, 7-geranyloxycoumarin. Hydrolysis of the substance gave umbelliferone and geraniol. Only geraniol showed the cytotoxic activity ($ED_{53}$ = 6.5 $\mu$g/ml) while umbelliferone and its methyl or allyl derivatives were not active.

  • The effects of diterpene acids (i. e. pimaradienoic acid, kaurenoic acid, hydroxy cembratrienoic acid and dihydroxycembratetraenoic acid) on malondialdehyde generation by rat platelets in response to thrombin were studied. All the compounds inhibited the generation of MDA.

  • The anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory activities of the constituents from Atractylodes rhizomes were evaluated. Atracylone showed anti-microbial activity. Atractylone and attractylenolide I possessed considerable anti-inflammatory activity utilizing rat cotton pellet granuloma bioassay.

  • Carvomethone, (+) pulegone, (-)isopulegol and (-) menthone, which are natural and widely distributed in the plantkingdom, were examined for their Lens Aldose Reductase inhibitory effects. All monoterpenes tested showed that the mild inhibitory effects. Inhibition percents of four monoterpenes were in the range of 23-42% at $10^{-3}M$ and 5-21% at $10^{-4}M$.

  • The oxidative dimerization of ferulic acid has been carried out using horse-radish peroxidase as catalyst to give a dihydrobenzofuran neolignan (1), the structure of which was elucidated as (2SR, 3RS)-2,3-dihydro-2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-3n-butoxycarbonyl-5-(2E-carboxyethenyl)-7methoxybenzofuran by spectroscopic analyses. This compound showed more potent cytotoxicity against several tumor cell lines than the starting material.

  • A conservation corrugated box for storing document archives was developed. The specifications of the double-walled E-flute corrugated conservation box were modified from those of the Library of Congress, USA. The Photographic activity test (PAT) of ISO 18916 was used to ensure protection of the archival contents from adverse effects of the container itself. Accelerated aging was conducted to evaluate the conservative properties of the box components. Atomic force microscopy was also used to evaluate changes in the cellulose surface due to accelerated aging.

  • Effects of total ginseng saponin, 20-S-protopanaxadiol saponin, 20-S-protopanaxatriol saponin and playcodon saponin on the osmotic behavior of liposomes were investigated by optical measurement. These saponins showed different activities on liposomal membrane, and cholesterol in liposomes was an important factor to this variation of saponin activities.
