  • The numerical simulation of tsunami against the south coast of the Korean Peninsula has been performed by adopting the standard appropriate grid size and the numerical model has been constructed to include the characteristics of the tsunami propagation applied for the care of the East China Sea. The artificial tsunami has been modelled first and then, it has been used as the boundary condition for the detailed model which showed the south coast of the Korean Peninsula.

  • A genus, Eocanthecona Bergroth (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Asopinae), is reported from the Korean Peninsula for the first time based on the species of Eocanthecona japanicola (Esaki & Ishihara, 1950). The morphological information such as description and diagnosis, and biological information are provided.

  • The genus Entomognathus Dahlbom 1829 is recorded for the first time in the Korean Peninsula, represented by the species Entomognathus brevis (Vander Linden, 1829). This species is trans-Palearctic in distribution ranging from northern Africa, through Europe, eastward to the Far East, and sole representative of the genus in the Far East. Of which occurrence in the Russian Far East, northern China and Japan were well documented, but nothing has been known so far in the Korean Peninsula. In this study, distributional range of E. brevis is expanded to South Korea in the Far East. Taxonomic information of the species and a revised key to genera of the tribe Crabronini occurring in the Korean peninsula are given.

  • Extreme environments and freak wave characteristics in the coastal waters of Korean Peninsula are analyzed using the observed wave data. Freak wave has been intensely emphasized as an important environmental force parameter in several recent research works. However, the mechanism and occurrence probability of freak wave are not clarified. The aims of this study we: to summarize the distribution of extreme environment for wind waves, and to find occurrence probability of freak wave in the coastal waters of Korean Peninsula. These extreme sea conditions are discussed by applying extreme value analysis method, and the statistic characteristics are summarized which can be used to the design and analysis of coastal structures. The mechanism and the occurrence probability of freak wave are also discussed in detail using wave parameters in considered with wave deformation in the coastal waters. Key Words : extreme wave, freak wave, extreme analysis, design wave, probability density.

  • An attempt is made to present a method of prediction for typhoons apporaching the Korean-peninsula. The method is based upon the Bayesian theorem to improve the observed (prior) probabilities of typhoons approaching the Korean sea area incorporating conditional probability. A total of 248 typhoons is collected and analyzed to establish prior probability and conditional probability according to the defined procedure. The typhoons used are those which encompassed the western Pacific area to which the Korean-peninsula is subjected. The results of examplary computations suggest that the presented method is promising for predicting approaching typhoons.

  • The Chungnam basin is a crucial area for studying the Mesozoic crustal evolutionary history of the Korean Peninsula. This study reports the revised geology and new isotopic ages from the northeastern Chungnam Basin based on detailed geological mapping and LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb analysis. Our renewed geologic map defines intra-basin, basin-bounding, and basement fault systems closely related to hydrothermal gold-bearing quartz vein injections. Here, we propose the directions of (micro)structural and geochronological future work to address issues on the relationship between the tectonic process, basin evolution, and hydrothermal fluid migration in the southwestern Korean Peninsula.

  • In the family Hydroptilidae, Trichoptera, 11 species in 3 genera, Hydroptila Dalman, 1819, Oxyethira Eaton, 1873 and Stactobia McLachlan, 1880, have been recorded from the Korean Peninsula but, until now, no species in the genus Orthotrichia Eaton, 1873. In this paper, we describe a new Korean species, Orthotrichia coreana sp. nov., based on adult specimens from the middle reaches of rivers in the southern region of the peninsula. This species is similar to O. iriomotensis Ito, 2013 from the southernmost region of Japan, but is clearly discriminated from the latter by features of the male and female genitalia.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) has a plan to launch COMS for consistent monitoring of the Korean Peninsula. Korea Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) is one of the main payloads of COMS which will provide a monitoring of ocean-colour around the Korean Peninsula from geostationary platforms. Ocean color observation from geostationary platform is required to achieve the proper spatial and temporal resolution for coastal observation mission. In this paper the characteristics of GOCI and LEO sensors are discussed. GOCI will provide the measurement data of 6 visible channels and 2 near-infrared channels (400nm ~ 900nm). The integration time and aperture diameter required to achieve the SNR specification of KGOCI are analyzed.

  • The paper is the basic study on the investigation that MSAS system can be usable around Korean Peninsula. The general issues of DGNSS were mostly investigated referred to previous published materials. And it is verified that the sufficient GPS satellites, which are more than 4 satellites, for positioning using MSAS service are available around Korean Peninsula.

  • The modem kinematic behaviors of the rigid block motions are well developed using synthetic analyses of paleomagnetic, petrologic, paleontologic and geophysical data which have been established in the last a quater of a century. Phanerozoic geodynamic evolution and tectonic episodes of the Korean Peninsula and East Asia region are discussed and summarized here.
