Objectives This study aimed to develop a Korean medicine (KM) clinical practice guideline for myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) via the collaboration of clinical and methodological experts. Methods The study will include an initial survey to establish a common understanding of MPS. To develop the clinical guideline, a multidisciplinary development group was formed. The group will finalize the clinical questions based on a preliminary draft. The GRADE methodology is going to be applied to determine the level of evidence and grading of the recommendations. Finally, approval from the relevant medical societies will be obtained. Results A protocol for developing a KM clinical guideline for MPS was presented. Before finalizing the clinical key questions, a literature search was conducted according to the protocol, and a draft of 19 clinical key questions was established. Conclusions An evidence-based KM clinical guideline for MPS is expected to contribute to the management of MPS. This may also serve as a reference for the development of other KM clinical practice guidelines in the future.
Objectives : The aim of this study is to establish evidence-based guideline on infrared therapy on acupoints. Methods : We investigated all the articles in websites including Pubmed, China national knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI) and medical journals authorized by national research foundation of Korea. The key words are acupoints and infrared. For the first time, we withdrew some papers no relationship to key words by reading titles and abstracts. In the second, we only selected randomized clinical trials(RCT) published from 2000 to 2010. Results : Out of 62 papers, only 2 RCT were analyzed. One (RCT 1) was about depression patients with insomnia(jadad score: 1). The other(RCT 2) was about urimic pruritus patients(jadad score: 5). In RCT 1, experimental group was significantly better than control group. In RCT 2, there was not statistical signification between two groups. Conclusions : In reality, there were not many papers on infrared therapy applications. Further study just like RCTs may be needed to establish evidenced-based guideline on infrared.
This study aims to analyze the research trend of Korean medicine based on social network analysis. To do this, a dataset has been collected from KCI (Korea Citation Index) database. According to the results, we have identify the longitudinal trend of the number of papers, journals, organizations and key words in this field. Moreover, based on the nodes' centrality of co-author network, we have found a core journal (i.e. Korean Journal of Oriental Physiology and Pathology), a hub institution (i.e. Kyunghee university) and two main key words (i.e. anti-oxidation and acupuncture) in the research network. In conclusion, integrating field experts' tacit knowledge in Korean medicine studies with the results of the explicit social network analysis on the research trend, we put forward further policy implications with regard to R&D strategies in this field.
Literature has revealed that the delta opioid receptor (DOR) exhibited diverse pharmacological effects on neuron and skin. In the present study, we have investigated whether the activation of DOR has hair-growth promotion effects. Compared with other opioid receptor, DOR was highly expressed in epidermal component of hair follicle in human and rodents. The expression of DOR was high in the anagen phase, but it was low in the catagen and telogen phases during mouse hair cycle. Topical application of UFP-512, a specific DOR agonist, significantly accelerated the induction of the anagen in C3H mice. Topical application of UFP-512 also increased the hair length in hair organ cultures and promoted the proliferation and the migration of outer root sheath (ORS) cells. Similarly, pharmacological inhibition of DOR by naltrindole significantly inhibited the anagen transition process and decreased hair length in hair organ cultures. Thus, we further examined whether Wnt/β-catenin pathway was related to the effects of DOR on hair growth. We found that Wnt/β-catenin pathway was activated by UFP-512 and siRNA for β-catenin attenuated the UFP-512 induced proliferation and migration of ORS cells. Collectively, result established that DOR was involved in hair cycle regulation, and that DOR agonists such as UFP-512 should be developed for novel hair-loss treatment.
Objectives : This study is designed to improve the practical possibility using Blood-Letting therapy through reviewing the literature recorded in the Donguibogam. Methods : Records on Blood-Letting therapy have been extracted from Donguibogam. First all articles containing the key words 'Hyul (血)' and 'Rak (絡)' have been extracted. Of them, records associated with Blood-Letting therapy had been sited and classified in terms of searching patterns for the Blood-Letting area, instruments for Blooding-Letting, cautions and side effects for the practice, applicable symptoms, acupoints/extraordinary acupoints, and Blood-Letting areas. Results : The regions capable of Blood-Letting are generally engaged with abnormal skin color such as black, bluish red, dark purple, dark blue, etc, and localized collection of fibrous exudate. There are several instruments used for Blood-Letting therapy; Samreongchim (三陵鍼), Chogyong (草莖), Pichim (鈹鍼), Lodaeguan (蘆管尖), Sachim (砂鍼), Saechim (細鍼), Gichim (?鍼), Eunjam (銀簪), nail, etc. Several cautions and side effects of the Blood-Letting therapy are presented. The Blood-Letting therapy could be applied to broad spectrum of symptoms. Body parts being applied were not only several acupoints but also effective points of the body. Conclusions : This study shows that Donguibogam represents Blood-Letting therapy in clear fashion so as to enhance the convenience and its practicality.
Objectives : Definition of Life has led an identity and advancement in the knowledge system of science including biomedicine. The world welcomes the new paradigm about the integrative medicine throughout Western Medicine and Traditional Medicine co-exists so far. Methods : Thus this study has comprised how Life was interpreted in Korean Medical history. To reach the purpose, various data and documents about Life subjected to the medical field was collected from medical textbooks and chapters presented in ancient Korean Medicine. Results : Most of important issue is Life as the key even though there are many opinions and conflicts in the view of Life between Western and Korean medical culture. As a result it is not different in the concept of Life each other except for speaking differently same as using the different languages. Integrative Medicine has accepted that it emphasizes the therapeutic relationship between practitioner and patient, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapies. Integrative Medicine declares to be a kind of medicine if vary medical system can focus on human being. Conclusions : Since Korean Medicine was early therapeutic medical categories developed based on Dao, Korean Medicine have to focus on mind and body interactive relationship and attribute to the public health care system in the future.
Objectives: This study was performed to review the research trends in the treatment of panic disorder in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Methods: We searched articles in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) from 2004 to 2014. Search key words were '惊恐' and 'panic disorder', and we selected eight studies except for non-clinical, unrelated studies, tests on animals. Results: We finally selected eight articles, and the results were as follows. CCMD-3 was most frequently used as a diagnostic criterion and HAMA was mostly used for outcome measurement. In TCM there are various ways, such as herbal medicine, acupuncture and psychotherapy, to treat panic disorder. Most of the studies showed effective results. Most of the treatment group reported that they had less side effects than the control group. However, the quality of these clinical studies was low. Conclusions: In TCM, research on panic disorder was being conducted more actively than in Korean medicine. According to this study, it seems that in TCM, the treatment of panic disorder might be more effective and have some advantages. Therefore, with this study, we hope to activate more clinical research on the treatment of panic disorder in Korean medicine.

Precious Mirror of Korean Medicine constitutes the basis of Korean orthodox medicine. In Korea it is regarded as the most influential medical work in existence and therefore been accorded first place among the medical works. Many books and reference works referred to Six Viscera and Five Bowels were quoted in Precious Mirror of Korean Medicine. This dissertation is to study quoted passages and reference books related to Six Bowels and Five Viscera in Precious Mirror of Korean Medicine. Based upon the medical works-Introduction to Medicine, Elementary Questions and Spiritual Pivot of Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine, Difficult Classic, Compendium of Medicine, A-B Classic of acupuncture and Moxibustion Pulse Classic, Synopsis of Golden Chamber, Key to Therapeutics of Children's Diseases, A Complete Work of Ancient and Modern Medicine, and etc.-- all but few references the quotations are clearly traced to their origin. It is hoped that this preliminary study will serve as a starting point for further work on the text, with more specific attention to the method of quotations and its many linguistic problems.

The aim of this review is to investigate studies of Korean medical treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome published in Korea and the evidence of it's effects in order to suggest a better research method in the future. Four Korean web databases were searched by using key words such as 'carpal', and checked relevant Korean journals. The papers were classified into the field of study, publish date, diagnostic methods, evaluation methods and analysed the study tendency. There are 9 case studies, 4 controlled studies. The paper was published almost every year more than once. Acupucture, pharmacopuncture, acupotomy, warm needle acupuncture, taping, etc. were used as treatment tools. The two most commonly used diagnostic method for carpal tunnel syndrome are Phalen's test and Tinel's sign. The two most commonly used evaluation method are VAS(Visual Analog Scale) and subjective symptoms. Korean medical treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome was effective in all studies. Korean medical treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome was effective in all studies. So it is possible that Korean medical treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome is useful as therapeutic medicine, but there are not sufficient evidence based papers, so there should be further studies.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to review clinical studies of traditional Korean medicine treatment (herb medicine) on vaginal atrophy. Methods: Key words "Vaginal atrophy", "Vulvovaginal atrophy", "Vaginal dryness", "Atrophic vaginitis", "Herb medicine", "Acupuncture", "Moxibustion", "Catgut embedding" were searched on 11 database systems (PMC, CENTRAL, EMBASE, CNKI, KTKP, KISS, NDSL, OASIS, DBpia, KMBASE, RISS) on May 31th 2019. In all searches, limits were set for MeSH (human) and language (English, Chinese or Korean). Results: 18 controlled clinical trials were collected in accordance with the selection and exclusion criteria. The types of intervention were herbal medicine, and types of herbal medicine were decoction, cream, suppository, oil, ect. The study results and methods of intervention were analyzed. Conclusions: Among the 18 trials, 5 studies showed that herbal medicine with hormone or antiprotozoal therapy was more effective than hormone or antiprotozoal therapy alone. And 2 studies showed that herbal medicine treatment was more effective than oil treatment of topical use. There was no abnormal vaginal bleeding, breast swelling and pain in TCM group.
