  • We investigated the generation of pretilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in a cell with slanted non-polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on mixtured polyimide (PI) surfaces. It was found that the monodomain alignment of NLC is obtained in a cell with an angle of incidence of 75∼85 degrees on PI surface. We consider that the monodomain alignment of NLC is attributed to anisotropic dispersion force effect due to photo-depolymerization of polymer on Pl surfaces. We successfully observed that the pretilt angle of NLC is generated above 5 degree with an angle of incidence of 75∼85 degree. It is considered that the pretilt angle generation in NLC is attributed to interaction between the LC molecules and the Polymer surfaces.

  • This study attempted to compare usability of auditory interfaces, which is a comprehensive concept that includes safety, utility, effectiveness, and efficiency, in personal computing environments: verbal messages (speech sounds), earcons (musical sounds), and auditory icons (natural sounds). This study hypothesized that verbal messages would offer higher usability than earcons and auditory icons, since the verbal messages are easy to interpret and understand based on semiotic process. In this study, usability was measured by a set of seven items: ability to inform what the program is doing, relevance to visual interfaces, degree of stimulation, degree of understandability, perceived time pressure, clearness of sound outputs, and degrees of satisfaction. Through the experimental research, the results showed that verbal messages provided the highest level of usability. On the contrary, auditory icons showed the lowest level of usability, as they require users to establish new coding schemes, and thus demand more mental effort from users.

  • The interactions between monocytes and extracellular matrix proteins have been implicated in atherosclerosis pathophysiology. In the present study we evaluated monocyte attachment and migration through oxidized and non-oxidized collagen IV. Monocyte attachment was tested on microwells coated with either native or oxidized collagen IV. Monocyte migration through collagen IV was examined on transwells. Monocytes derived from patients with diabetes mellitus showed an increased ability to attach and migrate through collagen IV as compared to those derived from healthy volunteers. Moreover, control monocytes attached to oxidized collagen at a higher degree, while they migrated through oxidized collagen at a lower degree, as compared to the native protein. Our results also showed the involvement of the alpha2 integrin subunit in the above phenomena suggesting a modified interaction between monocytes and collagen IV in diabetes mellitus.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate student nurses' knowledge and attitude related to the elderly. Method: The data were collected from 519 student nurses studying in university by means of a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis by SPSS version 10. Results: The average score of the respondents' knowledge of the elderly was 12.02(${\pm}2.77$) out of 25. The average score of the respondents' attitude toward the elderly was 80.09(${\pm}11.69$) out of 140. There was a statistically significant difference in the respondents knowledge of the elderly depending on their degree of preference for giving nursing care to the elderly (F=7.534, p=.001). There was a statistically significant difference in the respondents attitude toward the elderly depending on their degree of preference for giving nursing care to the elderly (F=23.167, p=.000), possession of living grandparents (F=6.174, p=.002), and degree of interaction with elderly (t=5.661, p=.000). Student nurses' knowledge and attitude related to the elderly were significantly correlated. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop a program for continuous teaching and education that will help increase student nurses' knowledge of the elderly and thereby positively change their attitude toward the elderly.

  • In this paper, a new interaction technique with the virtual single or dual acoustic reflection tablet is proposed to support the perception of depth cue and implement the effective spatial input systems of reducing the depth errors in general spatial sketching tasks. And several experiments show that the virtual wall with acoustic reflections can be thought of as a meaningful feedback for the plausible virtual conceptual design. By using the proposed idea, the degree of agreement to the target model is increased by 35% due to the single acoustic reflection tablet in the constant depth plane. In the slanted plane, the degree of agreement is increased by 8% due to the dual acoustic reflection compared to the single acoustic reflection and the degree of agreement is increased by 15% on the curved vase.

  • To generate workspace analytically using the robot kinematics, data on range of human joints motion, especially range of two degrees of freedom motion, are needed. However, these data have not been investigated up to now. Therefore, in this research, we are to investigate an interaction effect of motions with two degrees of freedom occurred simultaneously at the shoulder, virtual hip(L5/S1) and hip joints, respectively, for 47 young male students. When motion with two degrees of freedom occurred at a joint such as shoulder, virtual hip and hip joints, it was found from the results of ANOVA that the action of a degree of freedom motion may either decrease or increase the effective functioning of the other degree of freedom motion. In other words, the shoulder flexion was decreased as the shoulder was adducted or abducted to $60^{\circ}C$TEX>or abducted from $60^{\circ}C$TEX>to maximum degree of abduction, while the shoulder flexion increased as the joint was abducted from $60^{\circ}C$TEX> to $60^{\circ}C$TEX> The flexion was decreased as the virtual hip was bent laterally at the virtual hip joint, and also did as the hip was adducted or abducted from the neutral position. It is expected that workspace can be generated more precisely based the data on the range of two degrees of joint motion measured in this study.

  • The purpose of this study focuses on finding the influences of social capital on personal happiness by studying service industry employees. This current study utilized a questionnaire survey method which was used to collect the analysis data, from July 20 to August 10 in 2019. 281 questionnaires were gathered in Korea and the statistical analysis was conducted. This study recognized social capital as 3 independent variables and personal happiness as a dependent variable. Social capital is composed of the social network, social trust and social norms. First, the social network consisted of the satisfaction degree in one's social relations and the social interaction degree. Second, social trust is composed of the trust degree with ones neighbors in the same local area. Last, social norms are consisted of reciprocity, participation and a sense of belonging one feels in the same society. The findings of this study were as follows: first, it was found that social network, social trust, and social norms made affirmative influences on personal happiness of the employees. Second, the social network and social norms made statistically significant influences with personal happiness, but social trust was shown to not have similar influence.

  • Multi-frequency polarization observations of Abell 695 are reported here. The brightest radio source 0838+325, which was previously classified as a wide angled head-tail radio source, is, in the present observations, resolved into two separable sources, a head-tail source 0838+325 AB and a diffuse one 0838+325C. The radio-tail shows high degree of linear polarization(${\sim}50$-25%) along the radio-tail, suggesting that the interaction with its surrounding intracluster medium (ICM) is not highly turbulent. With the present data, thermal particle densities at the locations of these sources are estimated to be n > $10^{-5}\;cm^{-3}$.

  • This paper investigates the phatic function of intonation in Russian by recording and analysing 11 female native speakers of standard Moscow Russian. This paper shows that differences in intonation pattern of a sentence are associated with differences in degree of listener's involvement in the speech. Intonation pattern of an utterance having phatic function appears to be determined by 1) the speaker's readiness to talk to evoke the listener's attention ; 2) the speaker's intention to continue the communication. Some emphasis is placed on the relationship between intonation pattern of an utterance and speaker-listener interaction.
