Development of a coupled tendom driven robot hand

  • The POSTECH Hand adopting coupled tendon driven technique with planar two fingers is developed. The hand is designed to emulate principal motions of the human hand which has two and three joints respectively. Its kinematic parameters are determined through a parameter optimizing technique to aim at improving the isotropy of fingertip motions with new criterion functions of design. For the control of the hand, tension and torque control algorithms are developed. Based on the virtual stiffness concept, we develop the stiffness control method of a grasped object with redundant finger mechnism and investigate experimentally.

Test Results of the Mechanical Face Seal for a Turbopump

  • The mechanical face seal has been tested in Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARl) for turbopump applications. In the turbopump under current development, the mechanical face seal is installed between fuel pump and turbine to prevent a mixture of fuel and combustion gas. Generally the mechanical face seal in turbopump is exposed to severe environment because of great rotational speed, high temperature of combustion gas and high level of pressure difference. Thus a series of tests were performed to guarantee the reliability of mechanical face seal by means of simulating the practical operating conditions. The tests were conducted up to 20,000 rpm with pressure difference of 800 kPa and temperature of 620 K In addition several carbon materials for mechanical face seal were conducted to the tests to compare the life time. During the tests, the performance against leakage was monitored and the carbon wear was also measured to estimate the life of a mechanical face seal The results show that the leakage flow rates of mechanical face seal is ignorable compared to an overall flow rate of fuel pump. The carbon material which has the finest wear resistance was found during the tests. Lastly no critical failure of mechanical face seal was found during the tests and the reliability of mechanical face seal for turbopump was successfully proved.

  • This paper presents on capacity design of DC-fed-traction system. The system is introduced including a characteristics of train, feeding network configuration, and design method of substation arrangements. Optimal design procedures is described, and program for capacity computation of the system is presented using the nodal equation, K.C.L, K.V.L, Ohm's law and superposition theory. For the proof of the proposed algorithm, we accomplished the simulation of DC traction system for HA-Nam LRT. By considering whole component in DC traction system the conclusion will be much precise.

  • This paper deals with the numerical estimation of the bubble behavior and the partial discharge(PD) initiation voltage basis of electric field calculation with the coaxial coil layer-to-cylindrical electrode system for the simulation of high temperature superconducting coils. The theoretical results of bubble behavior and the PD initiation voltages showed fairly good agreements with the experimental results.

  • A problem of a circular elastic inhomogeneity interacting with a crack under uniform loadings (mechanical tension and heat flux at infinity) is solved. The singular. integral equations for edge and temperature dislocation distribution functions are constructed and solved numeric-ally, to obtain the stress intensity factors. The effects of the material property ratio on the stress intensity factor (SIF) are investigated. The computed SIFs are used to predict the kink angle of the crack when the crack grows.

  • In this paper, the RC filter for mitigating the output overvoltage of the 3-level 3300V 4MW inverter is described. The descriptions on power circuit and overvoltage phenomena are presented. The output transformer which may be used to obtain the higher output voltage, makes the filter design difficult because the parameter measurements are not easy and the accuracy may be poor. So, this paper presents several preliminary results on the output overvoltage with or without transformer to investigate the overall system characteristics. Some experimental results are also provided when the designed filter is applied.

  • The electric power, regenerated while railway vehicles braking or running downhill, makes U line voltage rise and the feeding system may not be secure. In order to keep away from these kind of insecurity, the regenerative energy should be consumed by loads or transmitted to the AC side via certain devices such as DC/AC converters. This paper introduces the developed regenerative inverter for electric railway.

  • In this study, BIEM(Boundary Integral Equation Method) using Green's function is applied in order to analyze 3D electric field precisely. The algorithm is developed with equivalent electric surface charge as a variable, which promises less unknown variables and higher accuracy of electric field analysis. The validity of the developed program is varified by applying it to a coaxial cylinder mode and 3-phase GIS model.

  • Tendon driven method to drive one joint using two actuators is developed and implemented. While the method has advantages over conventional transmissions, it also has several drawbacks like tendon slack, elongation and endurability. In this paper, a compensation method of the intrinsic non-linearities of tendon is proposed to improve the performance of antagonistic tendon driven method. In this method, tendon tension measurement is prerequisite which is measured with strain gauge type tension sensor. The developed method is implemented on one link test bed with colocated and non-colocated position sensor.
