  • The objective of this paper is to develop a powered wheelchair controller based on EMG for users with high-level spinal cord injury using a proportional control scheme. An advantage of EMG is relative convenience of acquisition by a surface electrode to users. Direction information can be easily extracted from two EMG channels and force information can be acquired by proportional relationship between the amplitude of EMG and user's power, respectively. Pattern classification algorithm is a threshold method with a supervised learning process. Furthermore, the emergency situation can be avoided using an interrupt function. We evaluated the performance of powered wheelchair controller by navigating a pre-defined path with three non-handicapped people. The results show the feasibility of EMG as an input interface for powered wheelchair and other devices for the seriously disabled.

  • This paper describes a mobile robot intended for being employed in a multi-agent system. We have already proposed a multi-agent system which realizes patient-aid by helping a lying patient take a distant object on the table. In this paper, a mobile robot agent is developed and is included in the system. An effective man-machine communication strategy is proposed by use of a vision agent settled on the ceiling. If a human (assumed to be a patient) wishes to take an object distant on the floor, he points to the object. The vision agent detects the direction of his arm by image processing and guesses which object he intends to take. The vision agent asks him if it is what he wants and, if yes, the mobile robot runs to take and bring it to him. The system is overviewed with the explanation of a mobile robot. Some experimental results are shown with discussion.

기혼여성 재택근무자와 직장근무자의 생활시간 사용에 관한 비교연구 (Comparison of the time use between married female home-based workers and on-site workers)

  • This study examined the time use of married female home-based workers in comparison with married female on-site workers. The data were collected from 165 home-based workers and 292 on-site workers in Busan and Kyungnam province, by a self-administered questionnaire. Frequency distributions, Pearson's correlations, and multiple regression analyses were conducted by SPSS/PC/sup +/. The major findings are summarized as follows: (1) both groups spent more time in physiological activities, household work, and leisure on weekends than on weekdays, while they spent more time in work on weekdays than on weekends; and (2) generally, the age of the youngest child and the home presence of an aged or handicapped relative had effects on the time use of home-based workers. These results imply that home-based workers need to develop some strategies for time management to harmonize their home-based work with household work.

  • This paper proposes a prototype of a safe and reliable wheelchair robot with Human Robot Interaction (HRI). Since the wheelchair users are usually the handicapped, the wheelchair robot must guarantee the safety and reliability for the motion while considering users intention, A single color CCD camera is mounted for input user´s command based on human-friendly gestures, and a ultra sonic sensor array is used for sensing external motion environment. We use face and hand directional gestures as the user´s command.   • High cost of crude oil imposes a heavy burden on vehicle users. Thus, much efforts are given to the development of alternative energies in advanced countries as well as our country. Among them, fuel cell is emerged as the most promising one for transportation. There is no harmful emission with hydrogen energy of which sources are abundant on the earth. The use of both fuel cell with self-generating system and electromanetic guidance system will be able to make urban track rapid transit operate even in the city areas of very limited infrastructure space with flexibility and on time accessibility. The high efficiency is also expected with clean environment and easy riding for both the old and the handicapped.

  • This paper describes the control of a health care robot (called Welfare Liferobot) with voice commands. The welfare liferobot is an intelligent autonomous mobile robot with its own control system on-board and the set of sensors to perceive an environment.   • The purpose of the present research is to provide a plan for an effective evacuation of residents and people who's in need of evacuation (such as children, the handicapped, and the old) and for the situation when staircase is not available for evacuation, by means of analyzing the evacuation behavioral characteristics of the residents or the evacuators and suggesting an evacuation plan using an emergency elevator in order to minimize casualties in case when fire broke out in a skyscraper.

  • This study attempted to develop a speech recognition module applied to a wheelchair for the physically handicapped. In the proposed speech recognition module, TMS320C32 was used as a main processor and Mel-Cepstrum 12 Order was applied to the pro-processor step to increase the recognition rate in a noisy environment. DTW (Dynamic Time Warping) was used and proven to be excellent output for the speaker-dependent recognition part. In order to utilize this algorithm more effectively, the reference data was compressed to 1/12 using vector quantization so as to decrease memory. In this paper, the necessary diverse technology (End-point detection, DMA processing, etc.) was managed so as to utilize the speech recognition system in real time

  • Recently, we can see worldwide the rapid increase in the population of the aged people, while that of young people is decreasing. Especially present Japan has a super-aged society, and it is a big social problem how to take effective measures to that in the future, Some items as well as researches have come out of various research them to the user. Such a change in population will be seen also in South Korea. Because South Korea has many social things in common with Japan, though they have different languages. Through this report, it is expected that it will be a good example for Japan PT to expand its activities and will connect to the future joint research of South Korea and Japan, by introducing it to South Korea.

  • A bi-modal tram has been developing to consist of articulated-two cars propelled by CNG hybrid (series type) in Korea since 2003. All wheels are driven by electrical motors independently, which can eliminate differential gears to reduce turning radius and make low floor to provide the old and the handicapped with easy access. In the bi-modal tram, therefore, reduction gear unit is key technology to make low floor and drive wheels independently. This study was aimed at performance evaluations of the reduction gear unit for the bi-modal tram. Oil leakage, oil temperature, vibration, acoustic noise in idle operations were measured for the reduction gear unit of the bimodal tram.
