  • It was reported that BCF's (Bioconcentration Factor) on Carbaryl and BPMC in concentration of 1, 2, 5 and 10 ppm, previously. Carassius auratus(goldfish) was chosen as test organism. Carbamates in fish and in test water were extracted with n-hexane and acetonitrile. GC-ECD was used to detecting and quantitating of Carbamates. Also, partition coefficients were determined with Stir flask method. To evaluate environmental toxicological profiles of tested compounds, experimental concentration were 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 ppm in contrast to previous report. It was considered that higher BCFs of BPMC due to its higher partition coefficient compared to Carbaryl. The obtained results were as follows: 1. It was possible to determine short term BCF of Carbaryl and BPMC through relatively simple procedure in environmental concentrations. 2. BCF$_3$ of Carbaryl in concentration of 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 ppm were 4.666 $\pm$ 0.002, 3.622 $\pm$ 0.004, 1.200 $\pm$ 0.002 and BCF$_5$ were 3.897 $\pm$ 0.005, 4.219 $\pm$ 0.017 and 1.186 $\pm$ 0.054, respectively. In the case of BPMC in same condition, BCF$_3$ were 4.077 $\pm$ 0.014, 4.900 $\pm$ 0.005, 4.750 $\pm$ 0.009 and BCF$_5$ were 3.465 $\pm$ 0.010, 4.612 $\pm$ 0.011 and 4.075 $\pm$ 0.012, respectively. 3. Carbaryl concentration in fish extract was increased as increasing test concentration, but BCF were decreased as prolonging test period, especially dropped at 0.5 ppm. 4. In the case of BPMC, BCF were decreased as increasing test concentration, but the concentration in fish extract of 3-day test group was slightly higher than that of 5-day test group. 5. Higher BPMC concentration in fish extract was due to its higher partition coefficient to compared with Carbaryl. 6. Determined logP of Carbaryl and BPMC were 2.200 and 3.180. But the calculated BCF using suggested equation was so different that predict BCF. It is suggested that BCF's of Carbamates have to be determined by experiment.

  • This study was performed to determine the adsorption-desorption characteristics of polyhexame-thyleneguanidine phosphate in three different soil types of textural classification. Adsorption and desorption studies is impotent for prediction their fate and generating essential information on the mobility of chemicals and their distribution in the soil, water and air of our biosphere. The detection limit of the test substance quantified by a spectroscopic method using Eosin indicator was $0.25{\mu}g/mL$. The reproducibility of analytical method was confirmed by the preliminary test. The concentrations of polyhexamethylenequanidine phosphate in aqueous solution were $1.36{\pm}0.09,\;2.45{\pm}0.01,\;and\;$4.25{\pm}0.05{\mu}g/mL$ by a spectroscopic method using Eosin indicator. The adsorption percents of polyhexamethylenequanidine phosphate in soil were greater than 95.2% for all three test soils. The desorption percents from the adsorbed soil were less than 4.5, 4.7 and 4.7%. Therefore, the adsorption coefficient (K) were greater than 110, 111 and 116. The adsorption coefficient calculated as a function of the organic carbon content (Koc) of the test soils were greater than 9,181, 11,100, and 8,942, respectively. Therefore, the test substance, polyhexamethylenequanidine phosphate could be concluded as medium or high adsorption (>25%) and poorly desorption (<75%) in soil media. Therefore, this chemical is likely to be retained in soil media and may not pose a risk in the aquatic environment.

  • Hydrocarbons which are the main sources of VOCs from motor vehicles are emitted not only from the engine exhaust gas but also from evaporation of the fuel in storage and supplying systems. Evaporative emissions from gasoline fuel systems could be classified by diurnal, hotsoak and running loss. Diurnal loss test procedures are different as countries. Korea introduced new evaporative regulation in 2009 with 24hour VT-shed test procedure and relaxed emission standards. The estimations on different test procedures in this study show that the new Korean regulation get a little more severe than before and the 2 day diurnal loss test of U.S. is the most severe. So the test procedures as well as the stronger standards should be considered in the next evaporative emission regulation to reduce VOCs from motor vehicles. The important parameters to affect evaporative emissions are air and fuel temperature and fuel vapor pressure. Diurnal loss increases exponentially as rising air temperature and vapor pressure. The effects of vapor pressure on running loss are different as the capacities of canisters. Tests with simulating real temperature and driving conditions show that hydrocarbons in evaporative emissions could be more than those in exhaust gas in summer season because of the higher air temperature.

  • This paper aimed to evaluate the test results of acute toxicity on effluent samples which were exempted from applying of ecotoxicity criteria. Total 316 effluent samples which were free from controlling of ecotoxicity regulation, were tested. Ratio of effluent samples which were exceeded the ecotoxicity criteria (TU > 1) indicated 23.7%. This ratio was a little bit higher than previous study (22.7%) on effluent samples which were controlled under ecotoxicity criteria. These results mean that our ecotoxicity management system is not appropriate and applying of ecotoxicity criteria to all effluent samples (82 industry categories) were needed in order to improve our ecotoxicity system. In addition, the same numeric criteria (TU 1 or 2) for all industry categories were proposed in consideration of these results. Ratio of effluent samples which exceeded the ecotoxicity criteria (TU > 1) with D. magna indicated 23.7%. However V. fischeri showed 14.6%. As a acute toxicity test organism, D. magna seemed to be more sensitive than V. fischeri. Ratio of samples which were exceeded TU 1 with D. magna by 24 h exposure period test indicated 35 %, whereas 48 h showed 41%.

  • Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) interfere with endocrine system in organisms, and have different mode of actions compared to conventional chemicals. Therefore, EDCs specific ecotoxicity tests and assessments have been globally developed by some organizations such as OECD, ASTM, and USEPA. In Korea, researches on EDCs and monitoring of EDCs in domestic environments were also continued. However, Korean ecotoxicity test guidelines for EDCs are not suggested till date. The purpose of this study is to review and analyze international ecotoxicity test guidelines for EDCs and the compare ecotoxicity methods and toxicity endpoints among standard test guidelines. We found that there are very limited EDCs specific soil ecotoxicity test guidelines (only in ASTM) compared to aquatic ecotoxicity test guidelines. Currently, fish, amphibian, waterflea, copepoda, earthworm, white worm, springtail, nematode, mite, and midge are suggested as standard ecotoxicity test species for EDCs. Reproduction, hormones, growth, vitellogenin, sex retio and development were proposed as endpoints for EDCs ecotoxicity. This study provided the comparison of EDCs specific ecotoxicity methods and endpoints between standard test guidelines, and suggested the further research to develop the method for assesseing ecotoxicity of EDCs.

  • It is known that individual factors as cognitive, perception, emotion, and motivation may greatly influence on recovery from neurologic region. This study was to investigate the effects of environmental reinforcement through motivation to perform the tasks voluntarily on motor and cognition function in rats with focal ischemic brain injury. Focal ischemic brain injury was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats (15 rats, $250{\pm}50$ g) through middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo). And then, experiment groups were randomly divided into three groups; The control group: MCAo induction ($n_1$=5), the environmental reinforcement (ER) group: the application for ER after MCAo induction ($n_2$=5), the environmental reinforcement through motivation (ERM) group: the application for ERM after MCAo induction ($n_3$=5). The climbing test (CT) and the modified limb placing tests (MLPTs) to measure the motor function and the Morris water maze acquisition test (MWMAT) and the Morris water maze retention test (MWMRT) to measure the cognitive function were performed. For the CT, the ERM group was significantly larger than the ER group. For the MLPTs, the ERM group was significantly decreased compared to other groups. For the MWMAT, the time to find the circular platform in the ERM group significantly decreased compared to other groups. For the MWMRT, the time to dwell on the quadrant circular platform in the ERM group was significantly increased compared to other groups. These results suggested that the ERM could improve the motor and cognitive functions in the rats with focal ischemic brain injury.

  • When an anchor penetrates and is installed under a seabed, a portion of the mooring line connected to the anchor is also embedded under the seabed. This embedded mooring line affects the capacity of the anchor in two ways. First, the frictional resistance that occurs between the mooring line and the seabed reduces the pulling force acting on the anchor. Second, the embedded part of the mooring line forms a reverse catenary shape due to the bearing resistance of the soil, so that an inclined pulling force is applied to the anchor. To evaluate the mooring line's effect on the capacity of an anchor in sand, centrifuge model tests were performed using two relative sand densities of 76% and 51% while changing the anchor depths. The test results showed that the load is reduced much more in deep and dense sand, and the inclination angle of the load is lower in shallow and loose sand.

  • Concrete filled steel tubular columns (CFT) are widely used in civil engineering works, especially in large scale of works because of high strength, deformation, toughness and so on. On the other hand, as a kind of strengthening measure for seriously damaged reinforced concrete piers of viaduct in Hansin-Awaji earthquake of Japan in 1995, reinforced concrete piers were wrapped with steel plate. Then, a new kind of structure appeared, that is, reinforced concrete filled steel tubular column (RCFT). In this paper, compression test and bending-shearing test on RCFT are carried out. The main parameters of experiments are (1) strength of concrete, (2) steel tube with or without rib, (3) width-thickness ratio and (4) arrangement of reinforcing bars. According to the experimental results, the effect of parameters on mechanical characteristics of RCFT is analyzed clearly. At the same time, strength evaluation formula for RCFT column is proposed and tested by experimental results and existed recommendations (AIJ 1997). The strength calculated by the proposal formula is in good agreement with test result. As a result, the proposed evaluation formula can evaluate the strength of RCFT column properly.

  • Determination of geotechnical characteristics of soil is either to use the field samples to measure the characteristics of soil through laboratory test or measuring the characteristics directly in the field. Field test can be derived similar value by considering characteristics of site and laboratory test can be confirmed the characteristic of soil by testing with field samples. This article describes relative density as the measure of compaction for cohesionless soils and presents several simple and mathematical relationships to help engineers estimate needed parameters for relative density calculations. The main purpose of this research is to investigate possible correlations between coefficient of uniformity, coefficient of curvature, maximum and minimum void ratio, mean grain size. Results show a linear relationship between the minimum and maximum void ratios and a power function relationship between coefficient of uniformity and the limiting void ratios. Void ratio range, which is the difference between the maximum and minimum void ratios, appeared to be log normally distributed but showed no simple mathematical fit to the data. these results were shown to help engineers estimate needed parameters for relative density calculations.

  • In the recycling of industrial waste unlike household waste, the legislation and the governmental systematic support, etc. were not also established due to an anxiety of hazard or harmfulness, etc. and a preconception. So the legislation and the system should be urgently established for the recycling of industrial waste. In this study, the environmental analyzing method of industrial waste-mixed coal ash in ash pond to recycle as a construction material is suggested by considering and analyzing test process and results about environmental impact factors of mixed coal ash. It is certified that there are not environmental problems in the recycling of mixed coal ash in ash pond as a construction material, according as its classification is general waste and each corresponding item of the leaching test result are satisfied with the 'environmental safety criteria' suggested in this study. And to build database, it is necessary to survey the environmental impact on surrounding areas with time after its recycling as a construction material.
