The rate of the rural population over the age of 65 was increased from 14.7% in 2000 to 20.6% in 2010. The rate of elderly living alone in rural areas was increased from 9.2% to 13.3% for 10 years. Two million households over 40% of the elderly living alone nationwide are concentrated in rural areas. This paper investigates cases used as living space by interview and remodeling senior centers (village community center) for the elders living alone in rural areas. In Gimje two the nation's first senior centers were remodeled in 2006 (for both the village community center) and were begun to use these as group homes. Evaluation was a success. Since then, these were increased by approximately 20 centers per year by year and are currently 108 centers at the end of 2011. In Chungcheongnam-do, a pilot project has been begun for communal living by remodeling the senior center (for both the village community center) and elderly housing. Municipalities are similar in their business (is mostly). However, the interview results for each municipality are different. The success of the project depends on rules proposed by local governments and the development of programs with users to continuous financially support.
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a customized health promotion program (CHPP) on depression, cognitive functioning, and physical health of elderly women living alone in the community. Methods: A randomized comparison of pre-and post-test design was used with 62 participants assigned to either an intervention (n=32 in seven clusters) or a control group (n=30 in seven clusters) in 14 areas of a town. The final sample included 30 intervention participants who completed the CHPP for 10 weeks, and 26 control participants. The intervention group participated in the CHPP weekly; they were provided with instructions about coping with their chronic illnesses, lifestyle modification, risk management, providing emotional support to each other, and floor-seated exercise, which they were encouraged to do three times a week in their homes. Results: Significant group differences were found in depression (U=48.50, p<.001), cognitive functioning (U=2.50, p<.001), left arm flexibility (U=251.50, p=.023), right arm flexibility (U=225.00, p=.007), static balance (U=237.00, p=.012), and gait ability (U=190.50, p=.004). However, there were no significant differences in bothgrip strength and muscle mass between the two groups. Conclusion: The findings indicate that CHPP was overall effective at improving depression, cognitive functioning, and physical functioning of elderly women living alone, and could therefore be considered a positive program for community-dwelling elderly women living alone.
Research outcome shows the following: 1. Estimation by the year 2015 on the number of the aged people and on the number of the household of living alone and living with spouse only, per age-cohort by 5 years, per basic self-govern-ins local groups and the city of Daegu. The result is supposed to serve as meaningful basic material in building up future policies in many areas for the aged people living in their homes. 2. Estimation varies according to the areas and the age-cohorts. In urban areas, increase of the numbers of the households of the aged people living alone and living with spouse only is estimated in every age-cohort. In rural areas, variance between two age-groups, old-old and young-old, is observed. Both of the numbers of the households for the aged living alone and the aged living with spouse only have increased continuously by the year 2005. But the hither-to increase tendency is estimated to reverse itself to a decrease starting from the younger within the young-old age group, and the ratio of the old-old age-group in rural population will sharply increase starting from the year 2005. Such increase in the number of the aged people in need of the housing and the social support requires the increasing policy consideration for the issue of housing for the aged living in their homes. In spite of the decreasing tendency in the number of the aged people living alone and living with spouse only in rural areas, still there will continue to be more number of such households than in urban area for the time being. The government of Gyeongsangbuk-Do should pay more consideration to the old-old aged living alone and living with spouse only in rural areas, while being prepared for the sharply increasing households for the aged living alone and living with spouse only in urban areas.
Purpose: Ageing in place may improve the quality of life of frail elderly and decrease their costs of services. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that influence the institutionalization of elderly using home care services in a Korean long-term care insurance system. Methods: This study used the data of '2009 Satisfaction survey of Korean long-term care system'. The survey proceeded to use a sampling data based on region, level of long-term care need, and insurance type among the beneficiaries between August and September 2009. The onset dates of institutionalization of 1,095 participants were ascertained from long-term care insurance claim data. This study calculated the hazard ratio through the Cox Proportional Hazard Model. Results: A total of 176 subjects who were institutionalized in nursing homes were included. There were higher risks in the group that included those who were 85 years and over, had dementia or fracture, used home-visit nursing service, and were not supported by direct family. Conclusion: The results of this study have policy implications to supplement the home care service system and postpone nursing home institutionalization of elderly.
The purposes of this study were to identify the changes of postprandial blood pressure and pulse rates of elderly living in nursing homes by time and position after a meal. Blood pressure and pulse rates of 141 elderly aged over 65 years were measured at before the meal to 90 minutes after the meal by 15 min. interval. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, repeated measures of ANOVA, ANCOVA, and t-test using the SPSS program. There were no significant differences in change of systolic blood pressure and pulse rates by time between sitting group and lying group after meal. The biggest drops in systolic pressure in sitting and lying position were occurred at 30 min and 45min respectively after the meal. There were no significant change in pulse rates except for the immediately after meal in lying position. To prevent complications of postprandial blood pressure reduction, nurses should carefully monitor blood pressure of elderly in lying position at least from 30 min. till to 90 min. after the meal.
The nutritional and health status of low-income alone-living elderly(ALE) was assessed in relation to the activity of daily living (ADL) and nutritional risk factors. One hundred and eighty five ALE over 65 years old, living in the Sungnam area, were interviewed in their homes through questionnaires. The results were as follows : 63.6% of the subjects considered themselves in poor the health and only 4.3% of them considered thermselves healthy. 89.7% of the subjects answered that they were suffering from illness and 29.7% were taking medication. The ADL was assessed through 10 checklist items and the average score of the ADL was $84.78{\pm}11.11$(maximum :100) The nutritional risk index(NRI) was evaluated by 12 risk factors and the average score of the NRI was $4.43{\pm}1.38$ (maximumː12) The scores of the ADL were positively correlated with the scored of the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL)(r=0.7523, p<0.001) and negatively correlated with NRI(r= -0.2694, p<0.001) When subjects were divided into nutritionally high risk group(HNARI: TEX>$NRI{\geq}5$) and nutritionally low risk group(LNRI : NRI<5) according to the USA screening basis, 48.9% of the subjects belonged to the HNRI, But 16.9% of the HNRI and 34.4% of the LNRI belonged to the fourth quartile($Q_{0.75}$) of the ADL, the distribution of which showed significant differences(p<0.05) We suggest that the application of the ADL as a screening tool for nutrition intervention programs for the elderly. Oncemore, further research is needed to develop appropriate checklist items for the ADL and NRI along with the screening basis for the NRI 새 diagnose the adverse nutritional status of the Korean elderly.

This study is a descriptive research that provides basic data to develop customized emergency education programs for strengthening the emergency coping ability of facility and group home caregivers. Data were collected from 7.10~8.15 in 2020 in the S and G areas. A total of 236 questionnaires were included for the analysis. Data were analyzed using χ2, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficients. Approximately 68.9% facilities and 50.7% group homes experienced emergencies, and there was a significant difference (χ2=8.42, p=0.004). First aid personnel were nurses (nurse aides) 55.3% facility and 42.7% of facility directors group home, showing differences (χ2=27.84, p<.001). 56.5% and 68.0% in the facility and group home, first aid care : ice pack, medication, Heimrich in the facility and 119 and guardian call, ice pack, Heimrich for the group home. First aid knowledge was determined to be significantly different between the facilities (11.60±2.09) and group homes (9.08±2.28) (t=8.39, p<0.001). Similarly, the emergency coping abilities showed a significant difference (t=8.00, p<0.001) between facilities (52.94±5.27) and group homes (47.33±4.39). In addition, a positive correlation was established between the experience of emergency situations and the emergency coping ability in the facilities. Overall, our data indicates that the emergency experience, emergency knowledge, and emergency coping abilities of the facility and group home caregivers are significantly different. We propose that emergency education tailored to the characteristics of each institution is needed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the factors affecting the life satisfaction during the communal life of the elderly in rural areas. Methods: A total of 143 subjects were selected through convenient sampling. Data were collected in self-reporting questionnaires from 1 August to 30 August 2019. The data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 23.0. Results: The Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) was significantly different according to age, education, and cohabitation. Depression was significantly different according to gender, age, education, and cohabitation. Life satisfaction was significantly different according to age, education, religion, and cohabitation. There was a positive correlation between Instrumental Activities of Daily Living and depression, except for life satisfaction. 41.0% of life satisfaction was explained by depression, religion, and IADL. Conclusion: The results of this study may be useful in understanding the life satisfaction level of elderly communal life and developing more specific programs for mental activity programs, and depression management strategies are required.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of family caregivers who care for the elderly under Long-term Care Insurance. Methods: Data were collected using focus group interviews and analyzed using a phenomenological approach. The four focus groups consisted of eight caregivers, two social workers and three nurses in B city, Korea. Results: Five themes were identified: 'Obtaining a care-helper certification for employment', 'Taking care of the elderly in their homes', 'Difficulties due to life changes', 'Difficulties due to reduced wages' and 'Dissatisfaction with the Long-term Care Insurance operating system'. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate that the long-term care system for family caregivers faces many systematic challenges in providing care for the elderly harmoniously in their home. To help them succeed in their tasks, Long-term Care Insurance system must offer respite and support programs to family caregivers.
