  • We measured lagrangian currents in the coastal regions off east coast of Korea. The experiment sites are the Ulijin region where Polar Front of the East Sea is formed and the Ulgi region where coastal upwelling occurs frequently in summer. Each drifters are equipped with GPS receiver, and their trajectories are montiored by receiving the data transmitted from drifters through radio signal. The experiment with 'transmitting' GPS is very useful in monitering flows in coastal regions. Trajectories of drifters in the Uljin Polar Front region in October 1994 showed counterclockwise flow pattern. The flow pattern agrees with the SST distributions obtained from NOAA-11 AVHRR image for the same period. The lagrangian trajectories of drifters at 5m and 15m depths in the Ulgi region for normal period of April 1995 showed that the currents at the top 15m layer are almost uniform and their magnitude is 29cm/s. However, the currents, measured by KORDI, during the upwelling period of June 1994 showed that the currents at 5m depth were 1.2 times stronger than those at 15m depth. The current pattern in the Ulgi upwelling region agrees with the horizontal and vertical distributions of seawater temperature measured by NFRDA at the same period.

  • Fluctuations in the ocean are closely related with the underwater acoustic propagation. Internal waves are generated by fluctuation of isopycnal layer in the upper part of the stratified ocean, which are propagated from offshore to coastal area. Physical characteristics of the internal waves existed in the East Sea were derived from the five field experimental data and the ocean monitoring buoy nearshore the mid-east coast of Korea. The dominant periods are appeared in the near-inertial period about $17{\sim}20hours$ and the short period about a few minutes. The wavelengths of them are $10{\sim}50km$ and $300{\sim}1000m$, and the phase speeds are $20{\sim}100cm/s$ and $30{\sim}70cm/s$, respectively The maximum amplitudes are about $20{\sim}25m$. Under the environment of short depression internal wave propagation, the variations of transmission loss field were investigated using an range-dependent acoustic transmission loss model(RAM). The result shows that the large irregular variations of transmission loss caused by progressing the internal wave from offshore toward coast.

  • Korea is surrounded by the West Sea, the South Sea, and the East Sea. There are various points at which large and small rivers flow into the sea, and areas where these rivers meet the coast are vulnerable to disasters. Thus, it is necessary to study disaster prevention techniques based on coastal characteristics and the pattern of disasters. In this study, we analyzed the risk factors of disaster districts analyzed in comprehensive plans for the reduction of damage to coastal cities from storms and floods. As a result of standardization, four factors (tide level, intensive rainfall & typhoon, wave, and tsunami) were identified. Intensive rainfall & typhoon occurred along the West Sea, the South Sea, and the East Sea coast. Factors that should be considered to influence disasters are tide level for the West Sea, tsunami and tide level for the South Sea, and wave in the East Sea. In addition, disaster prevention techniques to address these factors are presented, focusing on domestic and overseas cases.

  • Daily time series of longshore sea surface temperature (SST) data at 3 stations, sea surface SST data at 58 stations in the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsular from 2001 to 2005 were used in order to study the temporal and spatial variations of the upwelling coastal cold water occurred in summer season. When the cold water occurred, SST has been decreased more than $-5^{\circ}C$ in a day. The cold water occurred frequently in the eastern coastal areas of Korea such as Ulgi, Kampo, Jukbyun. Daily variations of cold water temperature were quantified using remote control buoy system at Kijang in the southeastern coastal water from July to August in 2004. Hourly variations of SST occurred around $\pm3^{\circ}C$ when cold water disappeared at Kijang. There were close relationship between the strength of East Korean Warm Current, North Korean Cold Water and the scale of spatio-temporal cold water variations in summer season.

  • Maturity and spawning of the giant Pacific octopus, Octopus dofleini was investigated based on the samples collected in the coast of Gangwondo, East Sea, from January to December in 2009. Individuals of mature stage had a higher occurrence rate from February to May, and gonadosomatic index (GSI) also showed a higher value from February to May than the other months. For that reason, the spawning period was estimated from February to May with the main spawning period from March to May. The total number of eggs in the fecundity (F) ranged from 9,045 in 11.0 kg (TW) to 148,682 in 16.5 kg (TW), which was proportional to total weight (TW), and the relationship between total weight and fecundity was $F=0.185{\times}TW^{2.238}$ ($R^2=0.389$). The total weight at 50% group maturity (TW0.5) of female was estimated to be 12.2 kg.

  • Microbial diversity in the 1500 m depth sea waters off the coast of Ulleung island of the East Sea, Korea, was investigated. Genomic DNAs were extracted directly from the marine microbes filtered through ultramembrane filters. Pyrosequencing of 16S rDNAs of these microbes resulted in 13,029 reads, of which uncultured bacteria consisted of 54.1%, alphaproteobacteria 23.4%, and gammaproteobacteria 22.3%. Other classes such as flavobacteria, actinobacteria, and epsilonproteobacteria were distributed within 0.2% of total reads. Among the cultivable bacteria, it was found that Rhodobacteraceae family of alphaproteobacteria, Alteromonadaceae, Halomonadaceae, and Piscirickettsiaceae families of gammaproteobacteria were mostly distributed in the deep-sea waters.

  • We investigated temporal and depth-related variation in species composition and abundance of the fish assemblage in the southern East Sea. Fish samples were collected seasonally between 2007 and 2008 using a demersal trawl off the southern coast of Korea. We identified 59 fish species belonging to 41 families. The most frequently occurring species was Coelorinchus multispinulosus, followed by Lophius litulon, Acropoma japonicum and Apogon lineatus. The five most abundant species were A. lineatus, A. japonicum, Myctophum nitidulum, Engraulis japonicus and C. multispinulosus, accounting for 87.04% of the total number of individuals collected. The number of species, abundance and diversity fluctuated with sampling location and time. Permutational multivariate analyses of variance revealed that the assemblage structure was influenced by year, season and water depth, with season being the main indicator. These changes were visually emphasized using non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination plots. Fluctuations in assemblage structure were due to differential contributions of the dominant species.
