Objectives: Elementary school national textbooks of 2013 were analyzed to examine the contents related to Korean medicine in the Korean elementary school curriculum. Methods: The contents related to Korean medicine were identified in the 118 elementary school national textbooks of 2013, and their proportion in the total textbooks was calculated. The Korean medicine-related contents were also analyzed. Results: There were twelve parts related to Korean medicine in seven chapters in six courses, and four directly related words and eight indirectly related words were found in twelve parts. The total number of lines for the contents related to Korean medicine were 205, which occupied 0.063% in the total elementary school national textbooks. The contents occupied 0.013% in the second grade, 0.265% in the third grade, 0.036% in the fourth grade, and 0.042% in the fifth grade. Conclusion: The results show that the coverage of Korean medicine in the elementary school national textbooks in 2013 does not provide enough information on Korean medicine. To help people get to know about Korean medicine and use it in the right way, it would be necessary to include more information about Korean medicine in textbooks, and continuous interest as well as research will be needed.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to infer the prescription effectiveness that have not been recorded in the existing effectiveness and to find out how to classify. Conclusions : Each information of herbal effectiveness strength was extracted using the prescription textbooks' effectiveness information. These results were efficient to infer and classify bang-yaghabpyeon prescription effectiveness.
The medical text books used during the Joseon Dynasty can be seen to change over time by examining various records. These records show that the list of medical textbooks suddenly changed a lot between the era of King Sejong and Sejo in the Joseon Dynasty. However, since there are not many studies on this topic yet, this study was conducted and the following causes of these changes were identified: The first reason is the compilation project of Euibangyoochui (醫類聚聚) because the date of compilation of Euibangyoochui is clearly related to the period of change to the list of medical textbooks. The second reason is the difficulty of the medical examination during the Joseon Dynasty. Medical tests in the Joseon Dynasty were very difficult. Therefore, it was too unrealistic to keep 25 or 26 textbooks. Third, there was the problem of supply and demand of medical textbooks. Because the prices of these books were very high at that time, owning 25 or 26 medical books for an individual was a significant financial hardship. This study was able to confirm this through various forms of circumstantial evidence. However, more historical materials should be discovered in the future and research should be conducted to more accurately grasp the situation of the time.
On the basis of total page, the coverage rate of education of safety and health in textbooks of elementary school was approximately 10%. In middle school, the contents of safety education were addressed mainly in subject of chemistry below about 5% of coverage rate whereas the contents of health education appeared mainly in subject of athletics below about 15% of coverage rate. Similarly, the contents of safety education and health education in textbooks of high school were indicated mainly in the subjects of chemistry and athletics, showing below about 5% and 30% of coverage rate, respectively. In conclusion, the education level of safety and health in textbooks was generally lower compared to other contents. The coverage rate of safety education was relatively lower than health education, which implicates that extensive contents related to safety education are needed to be added to textbooks in order to establish preliminary attitude for preventing workplace accident.
There has been a need for an operational curriculum for teaching Chinese characters used by traditional Korean medicine (TKM), but the it was not thoroughly reviewed so far. We analysed the frequency of unicode Chinese characters with five textbooks of traditional Korean medicine used as a national standard. We found that 氣, 經, 陽, 陰, 不, 熱, 血, 脈, 病, 證, 寒, 中, 心, 痛, 虛, 大, 生, 治, 本, 之 are the 20 most frequently used Chinese characters, and also showed 100 frequently used characters for each textbook. We used a cumulative frequency analysis method to suggest a list of 1,000 prerequisite Chinese characters for the TKM education (TKM 1000). which represents the current usage of Chinese characters in TKM and covers 99% of all textbook use if combined with MEST 1800. This study showed prerequisite and essential Chinese characters for the implementation of evidence-based teaching in TKM. The TKM 1000, a prerequisite characters by this study based on the TKM textbooks can be used for the development of Korean Medicine Education Eligibility Test (KEET), entrance exam to the Colleges of Oriental Medicine or textbooks, and educational curriculum for premed students.
Objectives : This study aimed to investigate the medical contents of Korean medical textbooks and intervention usage in clinical practice. Method : We conducted an email survey of Doctors of Korean Medicine(DKMs) registered with the Association of Korean Medicine and analyzed the 259 responses that we received. Results : 1, The study showed that most DKMs used western medical knowledge concerning "history taking and diagnosis"(96.5%), "management and prevention"(95.8%), "causes and overview"(91.9%), and "prognosis"(90.3%). DKMs did not usually use western medical knowledge with regard to "diagnosis and treatment evaluation tools"(40.9%) or "western medical treatments"(25.1%) in their clinical practice. 2. Of the DKMs surveyed, 39.0% usually used traditional and western medical terms at similar levels of frequency in explaining their patients' conditions, while 35.9% used western medical terms more often and 20.8% used Korean traditional medical terms more often. 3. Most DKMs usually used acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping therapy, Moxibustion in their practice and used herbal prescriptions presented in Dongeuibogam(57.1%), Bangyakhappyeon(52.9%), and Sa-Sang Constitutional Medicine(36.7%), although 27.8% used their own herbal prescriptions in creating for patients. In practice, DKMs usually used meridian acupuncture(64.1%), needling myofascial trigger points(54.8%), sa-am acupuncture(42.1%), dong-shi acupuncture therapy(24.7%), and constitutional acupuncture therapy(8.5%). Conclusions : We found that most DKMs use western medical contents as well as Korean medical contents in clinical practice. New Korean medical contents should be establish based on these results.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze addiction prevention related content shown in middle school text books. Methods: Using a combination of the terms "addiction", "drug", "medicine", "personal preference", "smoking", "drinking", "sex", "misuse" or "abuse" as key words, the researchers screened the table of contents of 23 randomly selected middle school textbooks from the 2009 curriculum. Finally 13 textbooks (physical education=10, health=3) were selected for this study, and analyzed using Krippendorff's contents analysis. Results: Through indepth discussion and investigation of the relevant textbooks, content related to addiction prevention included material addiction (77.8%) and behavioral addiction (22.2%). The construction of addiction prevention in middle school textbooks included understanding addiction, rejection of peer temptation, and empowerment of self-control. Conclusion: When developing an intervention for addiction prevention that targets middle school students, education with accurate addiction information must be considered so that the students have the correct knowledge about addiction and addiction prevention. Additionally, the ability to reject peer temptation when invited to act upon related addiction behaviors should be treated seriously. The empowerment of self-control is also important, and can be promoted through strengthening self-regulation competence.
Objectives : This study aims to propose a processing method for dosage units of medicinal materials and the database schema to manage formula data in Korean medicine ontology. Methods : All dosage units of medicinal materials are collected from the seven textbooks that contain formula data of Korea medicine ontology. Dosages are converted to Arabic numerals and units that are frequently used are converted to representative units. Database schema is designed for processing and managing the formulas and medicinal materials with dosage units. Results : Seven representative units are selected out of 77 units. They will be used in the addition or subtraction of medicinal materials in a formula support system. The remaining units will be made available for references. Conclusions : EMR or chart programs used in clinical hospitals contain formula data that is already standardized. However, the formula data in Korean medicine literature and textbook is not refined, so it is necessary to process the dosages and units of medicinal materials to use in the formula support system. This result is a processing method to utilize the formula data of Korean medicine textbooks and it will be implemented this method in the established formula support system in the future.
This paper reviews the historic origin and traits of the classification system used in current Korean herbology textbooks. By reassessing its value, it proposes the most relevant path for future revisions and supplementations. Through an evaluation of the history of the modern style of classification in terms of its efficacy and statistic analysis of the distribution of individual herbs in each category, this paper shows how the classification systems of Korean herbology textbooks were influenced by contemporary Chinese herbology, particularly that of the Cheong [淸] Dynasty. An examination of the academic background, strengths and weaknesses of each classification system demonstrates the need for future research on classification systems to concentrate on resolving the following issues: how well the setting and composition of each classification system reflects reality, and how closely it is connected to related sciences such as etiology and pathogenesis, prescriptionology, and diagnosis.
There has been a need for establishing operational curriculum for chinese characters and chinese writing used by traditional korean medicine (TKM), but it was not carefully recognized so far. We analysed the frequency of unicode chinese characters from five medical textbooks and showed prerequisite chinese characters for TKM beginners. It was found that 之, 者, 不, 也, 而, 氣, 陽, 陰, 下, 其, 病, 爲, 人, 以, 中, 則, 於, 脈, 上, 故 are the most frequently used 20 chinese characters. We also showed that adequate prerequisite chinese character should be designated for the more efficient education of TKM. This study was the first systematic approach to get essential and prerequisite chinese characters for the education of TKM. The prerequisite characters by this study will be used for the development of KEET (Korean Medicine Education Eligibility Test), entrance exam to the Colleges of Oriental Medicine and textbooks, and educational curriculum of premed students.
