The Effect of Factors such as Changes in the Degree of Difficulty of Concepts Presented in the Chemistry I Textbook, Changes in Class Types, etc. on Academic Achievement by Level

  • We analyzed and compared factors such as changes in the degree of difficulty of concepts presented in Chemistry I textbook, changes in class types (non-face-to-face, face-to-face), etc. on academic achievement by level (upper, middle, and lower). Students from A high school in Gyeongsangnam-do were selected for the subjects of the study. As a result of analyzing the change in the degree of difficulty of concepts, the total score of chemistry I combined by non-face-to-face and face-to-face classes during the second semester was lower than that of the first semester. As a result of analyzing the impact of factors such as changes in conceptual difficulty, changes in class types, etc. on academic achievement by level, students' grades at the 'lower level' by non-face-to-face classes were lower than those by face-to-face classes. In particular, at the lower level of the second semester, there was a large difference in grades between non-face-to-face and face-to-face classes. In the results of these studies, it was found that instructors' active feedback is important to identify difficulties in understanding learning contents for students with low levels of academic achievement and improve them at the same time.

Content Analysis of 'Preparing for Parenthood' Chapters in the 2015 Revised Curriculum High-School Technology and Home Economics Textbooks: Implications for Pre-Parent Education Aimed at Adolescents (2015 개정 교육과정 고등학교 기술·가정 교과서의 부모됨의 준비에 관한 내용분석: 청소년 대상 예비부모교육에 대한 함의)

  • This study aimed to identify ways to implement pre-parent education for adolescents in regular classes at school. This was achieved by investigating whether the contents of the 2015 revised curriculum high-school technology and home economics textbooks reflected the goals of pre-parent education. The main texts and activities of chapters with 'preparing for parenthood' in the title from 12 high-school technology and home economics education textbooks were analyzed with respect to the three pre-parent education goals of developing perceptions and attitudes toward parenthood, learning parenting knowledge and skills, and reinforcing parental capacity. The results were as follows. First, textbook contents and activities reflected the three goals of pre-parent education in a balanced manner. Second, both the contents and activities of textbooks tried to motivate students to perceive parenthood and parenting through reflection on their relationship with their own parents. Third, because the textbooks encouraged students to consider parenthood and parenting, they acknowledged the importance of undertaking pre-parent education to reinforce their parental capacities. Using such textbooks in regular technology and home economics classes is expected to provide students with an opportunity to consider parenthood and shape their perceptions and attitudes accordingly, thereby allowing adolescents to prepare themselves for parenthood and become good parents.

Exploring Opportunities for Mathematical Modeling in Korean High School Textbooks: An Analysis of Exponential and Logarithmic Function Tasks

  • This study aims to investigate the extent to which Korean high school textbooks incorporate opportunities for students to engage in the mathematical modeling process through tasks related to exponential and logarithmic functions. The tasks in three textbooks were analyzed based on the actions required for each stage in the mathematical modeling process, which includes identifying essential variables, formulating models, performing operations, interpreting results, and validating the outcomes. The study identified 324 units across the three textbooks, and the reliability coefficient was 0.869, indicating a high level of agreement in the coding process. The analysis revealed that the distribution of tasks requiring engagement in each of the five stages was similar in all three textbooks, reflecting the 2015 revised curriculum and national curriculum system. Among the 324 analyzed tasks, the highest proportion of the units required performing operations found in the mathematical modeling process. The findings suggest a need to include high-quality tasks that allow students to experience the entire process of mathematical modeling and to acknowledge the limitations of textbooks in providing appropriate opportunities for mathematical modeling with a heavy emphasis on performing operations. These results provide implications for the development of mathematical modeling activities and the reconstruction of textbook tasks in school mathematics, emphasizing the need to enhance opportunities for students to engage in mathematical modeling tasks and for teachers to provide support for students in the tasks.

Analysis of the definition and real life context of range of numbers and approximation (수의 범위와 어림하기의 정의와 실생활 맥락에 대한 분석)

  • In real life, the concepts of number range and approximation are frequently used. These concepts are closely related to various mathematical concepts, and the need for research on the defining and learning of these related terms is emphasized. The learning contents of seven mathematical terms related to the range of numbers and approximation were analyzed, focusing on the definition of terms and the context of real life. As a result of analyzing the contents of 10 currently used elementary school mathematics textbooks, the lessons were organized according to the achievement standards presented in the curriculum, but the composition and order, real-life context, examples used in definitions, and the highlighted parts and directions of the activities varied depending on the author's intent. Based on the analysis results, implications for textbook writing and classroom instruction were presented.

A Research on Analysis of Eating Habits and Textbook Contents for Efficient Nutrition Education of Elementary School Students in Gangneung City (초등학생의 효율적인 영양교육을 위한 교과서분석 및 식습관 조사연구 -강릉시내 초등학생 대상으로-)

  • This study empirically examined the actual level of elementary school children's knowledge of nutrition and the extent of current nutrition education for the children through the use of textbooks. Two or three classes were sampled from each of six schools, respectively, in Gangneung; of the 562 questionnaires that were distributed, 537 were returned and used for analysis. Respondents were all sixth-graders, on average boys and girls were 153.02$\pm$8.19㎝ and 152.79$\pm$7.15㎝ in height and 45.27$\pm$10.32㎏ and 43.33$\pm$7.46㎏ in weight, respectively, which was consistent with others' research. Most children had two siblings and a working mother, considered that they were well off, and their mother prepared meals. Children regularly had breakfast and dinner, although more children had dinner than breakfast. As a whole, their knowledge of the main nutrients contained in foods was lower than their general knowledge of nutrition. There were significant differences in knowledge of the main nutrients contained in foods, with girls showing more knowledge than boys (p<0.01). Most of them learned about nutrition at school, followed by home. At school, Practical Technology classes taught them the most about nutrition. Although Physical Education classes were expected to teach about nutrition in a quantitative way, they accounted for just 4.7% of the overall knowledge. As for the children's understanding of nutrition education through use of a textbook at school, just 19% of the students gained a very good understanding. As for interest in nutrition education at school, 22.2% of the students had no interest, while girls were more likely to have their interest in nutrition education at school affected by knowledge of nutrition than boys. For both boys and girls, the most desired method of education was cooking practice. More research across subjects is necessary so that nutrition education concentrated on the curriculum for fifth-graders can be provided by stages from the lower grades. Since cooking practice or games were preferred, it is necessary to develop nutrition education methods to incite active interest rather than passive education.

A Study on the Selection of Contents Fitting for Bio Medical-Engineering Experience Program - Forcus on High School Life Science Textbook - (의용생체공학 체험프로그램에 적합한 내용요소 선정 - 고등학교 생명과학 교과를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the criteria proposed by the research conducted to a group of life science teachers for the requirement of experience program in life science textbook of high school curriculum. A committee consisting of education experts has developed the research tool for the purpose described above. Research tool covered the degree to the necessity of experience program reflected in the subsection and in the context of the life sciences, and the section should be dealt with in the program. A total of 53 life science teachers responded to the survey conducted in 46 high schools of Dajeon city for a period of 1 month (April, 2012). Subsequent analysis of the investigation identified 15 demanding subsections to be reflected in the experience program including 'gene and life engineering'. Contents that need to be applied to the subsections are 32 items including 'the technology of life engineering and its utilization'.

A Comparative Analysis of the Draping Method in Basic Bodice (베이직 바디스 입체재단법 비교 분석)

  • This study aimed to develop a draping manual for the basic bodice to be available in colleges and industries. For this, draping methods mentioned in six different textbooks were comparatively analyzed. As for the research method, draping methods were compared by using training textbook, and basic bodices designed with muslin were assessed using the 5-point Likert scale. First, the draping methods of basic bodices were comparatively analyzed. The main baselines were set as the center front line, the center back line, the bust line, and the shoulder blade line. The position of dart was suggested based on the princess line, in both the front and the back. The value of dart was classified as a fixed size with any associated excess. The length of dart was set based on the bust point and shoulder blade point or a fixed size. The amount of ease was randomly set based on the fixed size, bust circumference, waist circumference, interscye length, armholes and shoulder lines, or the worker's intuition. Second, according to the appearance evaluation of the patterns, the following patterns obtained the highest scores: A pattern 2.5cm away from the B.P point of the waist dart and shoulder dart in the frontal appearance, a pattern of 0.6~0.7cm ease for the front armhole, a pattern with an ease of 1.2cm in the bust and 0.6cm in the waist. As for back appearance, the pattern in which the point of waist dart is 2~3cm from the bust line received the highest score.

The analyses of duplicated contents of 'Family life' unit of Home Economics and other subject textbooks for the middle school students - Focusing on the 2009 revised curriculum - (중학교 가정 교과 교과서와 타 교과 교과서 '가족생활' 영역의 중복성 분석 - 2009 개정 가정과 교육과정을 중심으로 -)

  • The purposes of this study were to analyze the duplicated contents of 'family life' unit of home economics and other subject textbooks for the middle school students. It focused on the 'family life' area in the home economics textbook compiled following the 2009 revised curriculum, and textbooks of other subjects compiled in the same period. To achieve the purpose of this study, "Home economics I II", "Ethics I II", "Social studies I II", "Science I II III", and "Physical education"were analyzed. The results were as follows. The contents in 'family life' area of "Home economics I II" were overlapped most in the textbook on Ethics, and then Science, Physical education, and social studies in order. In Ethics textbook the contents in family life area and those throughout the whole chapters of home economics textbook are overlapped most. The contents of home economics textbook are overlapped at the content of 'Juvenile's sexual development' of 'Human development process' in science and physical education, and at the content of 'Juvenile's emotional and social development' of 'Understanding of human development' in social studies. Seen from this study the 'family life' area of home economics is overlapped in science, physical education, and social studies, but, home economics has comprehensive contents with the goal of managing healthy individual and family life compared with other subjects, and it induces students' moral practices in their real life on the basis of scientific knowledge different from morality, social studies, and physical education. Hence, the instruction of 'family life' area might be done more effectively by focusing on home economics and integrating the connections of duplicated contents in Ethics, Science, Physical education, and Social studies.

Overview of respiratory diseases in terms of insurance medicine (주요 호흡기질환의 보험의학적 이해)

  • Lung diseases are common in general population and they are also important in insurance medicine. According to current textbook of insurance medicine, there are references of western research which performed at 1980s and early 2000. It's necessary to update the reference. In this article, several respiratory disorders such as Kartagener's syndrome, bronchial asthma, drug-resistant tuberculosis, etc are reviewed in terms of insurance medicine. Reference articles were used in Korean study, if possible. I hope this article being a role of helping many insurance doctors and underwriters in Korea.
