Three species of pufferfishes (family Tetraodontidae) were examined to determine their morphological characteristics based on meristics, morphometrics, olfactory organs, and lateral line systems of specimens collected from the Chennai Fish Market in Tamil Nadu, India, in December 2016. The three species, which are all previously unreported in Korea, are Chelonodon patoca (Hamilton, 1822), Lagocephalus spadiceus (Richardson, 1845), and Arothron immaculatus (Bloch and Schneider, 1801). For nostril shape, fishes of the genus Lagocephalus have two nostrils, while Arothron and Chelonodon have none. Fishes of the genera Lagocephalus and Arothron have a single well-developed lateral line on the body, while Chelonodon fishes have two lateral lines that merge on the caudal peduncle.
Twenty seven species of pufferfishes (family Tetraodontidae) have been examined to find their generic characters based on olfactory organ, lateral line system, prickles, body form and color characters of specimens collected in 20 places along the coast of Korea from September, 1989 to July, 1994. Based on nostril shape, the genera of Takifugu, Lagocephalus, Plurancanthus, Spheoides and Feroxodon have two nostrils, and those of Ephippion and Canthigaster have a single nostril or nasal tentacle, while Boesernanichthys, Arothron and Chelonodon have no nostril. In the genera of Lagocephalus, Spheoides, Boesemanichthys, Arothron and Feroxodon have only a single well-developed lateral line on the body, in those of Takifugu and Plurancanthus usually have two lateral lines, and those of Chelonodon and Ephippion have two lateral lines merged on the caudal peduncle. Based on the lateral line system and olfactory organ, genus Canthigaster has different characters from the other genera of the family Tetraodontidae. In Ephippion guttifer, the prickles on the dorsal and lateral of the body are enormously enlarged into plates forming a partial carapace. Of the 22 species which have prickly spines, the genera, Lagocephalus, Takifugu stictonotus and Arothron Stellatus have the larger ventral pricklyy spines than the dorsal ones. In genera Lagocephalus most of the species have prickly spines that coverd both the back and belly, while L. inermis has no prickly spines.
Six species of the family Tetraodontidae collected from coastal waters of Korea were described with photographs, all of which are unreported previously from Korea. They are Lagocephalus inermis (Temminck et Schlegel), Takifugu alboplumbeus (Richardson), T. pseudommus (Chu), T. reticularis (Tien, Cheng et Wang), Arothron hispidus (Linnaeus) and A. nigropunctatus (Bloch et Schneider).

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to explore the antitumor mechanism and effects of tetrodotoxin through a literature review of experimental and clinical studies. Methods : Medical databases, including The Cochrane Library, Pubmed, NDSL, RISS4u and National Assembly Library, were searched for relevant articles published from January 1, 2000 to October 31, 2014 using the keywords 'tetrodotoxin', 'cancer' and 'tumor'. The results were classified into experimental studies(in vitro and in vivo) and clinical studies. Analysis of the results was conducted on several research areas including the mechanism, antitumor effect and adverse effects of tetrodotoxin(TTX). Results : A total of 34 experimental studies(32 in vitro and 2 in vivo) and 3 clinical studies were found in the search. Most of the experimental studies suggested blocking of voltage-gated sodium channels in metastasis of tumor cells as the main antitumor mechanism of TTX. The most common type of cancers mentioned in the experimental studies were prostate and breast cancer. All of the clinical studies were on the application of TTX on moderate to severe cancer-related pain. No adverse effects of TTX were reported in in vivo studies but mild to moderate adverse events were reported in clinical studies. Conclusions : The results show that tetrodotoxin, which is the main component of Tetraodontidae(commonly known as pufferfish) poison, could be clinically used for antitumor therapy. However, further studies should be conducted on its safety.
Twenty seven species of pufferfishes (family Tetraoaontidae) have been examined to find their generic characters based on vertebrae and pterygiophore characters of specimens collected in 20 localities along the coast of Korea from March, 1991 to March, 1994. It was divided by 3 groups based on vertebrae number as follow : the genera Lagocephalus, Pleurancanthus, Spheoides, Arothron, Chelonoeon and Canthigaster have 17$\~$19 vertebrae, genera Ephippion, Boesemanichthys and Feroxodon have 20 vertebrae, and genus Takifugu have 19$\~$25 vertebrae, The number of vertebrae ranged from 17 to 25 with the maximum of 25 in Takifugu obscurus. The modal number of vertebrae in Lagocephalus is 17 (L. lunaris), 18 (L. inermis), and 19 (L. gloveri, L. wheeleri, L. larigatus), with the lower number more specialized. Paired neural spines appear at number of the 1st$\~$5th vertebrae in Takifugu pardalis, Takifugu obscurus and at number of the 1 st$\~$4 th vertebrae in the other species and genera. All of the species of Lagocephalus and Pleurancanthus have dorsal and ventral pterygiophores processes, and flat-shaped epural, while none of the abdominal vertebrae processes complete haemal arches. The neural and haemal spines of the last few caudal vertebrae aye shorter in Pleurancanthus than in the other genera, associated with the depressed caudal peduncle. The genus Canthigaster is distinguished the first pterygiophores of the dorsal and ventral fins is always much larger than the others genera. Based on the haemal arches and spines of the abdominal vertebrae, genus Canthigaster has different characters from the other genera of the family Tetraodontidae.
Length-weight relationships were estimated for 11 fish species caught in Baekya Island, Korea. Samples were caught in depths of <15 m by fish pots between November 2008 and July 2009. The sampling gear, fish pots, is a widely used as commercial fishing gear in shallow waters of the region. The most abundant families were Hexagrammidae (20.7%), Cottidae (18.5%), Tetraodontidae (14.8%) and Scorpaenidae (13.3%). Estimates for parameter b of the length-weight relationship ($W=aL^b$) ranged between 2.454 and 3.361.
The fish fauna from the Yellow Sea was reviewed based on the published materials from Korea and China. As a results, author confirmed 389 species belonging to 257 genera, 123 families and 27 orders. Among them, the ascertained species in the western coast of Korean were 233 species belonging to 161 genera, 80 families and 20 orders, and those distributed in the Chinese water were 300 species belonging to 213 genera, 115 families and 27 orders. The largest fish group in this area was order Perciformes having 164 species belonging to 114 genera and 51 families, followed by order Scorpaeniformes comprising 45 species belong to 27 genera and 11 families, and order Pleuronectiformes having 34 species belong to 24 genera and 5 families. The important species in Korea economically were families Rajidae, Anguillidae, Clupeidae, Engraulidae, Scorpaenidae, Serranidae, Platycephalidae, Sciaenidae, Mugilidae, Trichiruridae, Stromateidae, Cynoglossidae, Pleuronectidae, Tetraodontidae. There were 9 endemic species in the westernsea of Korea : Neosalanx jordani, Pseudosciaena poliactis, Repomucenus koreanus, Repomucenus leucopoecilus, Achanthogobius elongata, Scartelaos sp., Cynoglossus joyneri, Takifugu flavidus and Takifugu obscurus.

In order to understand the seasonal variations of species composition of fish in the Goseong, middle East Sea of Korea, we surveyed fish fauna using set net during 2 years. In this study, a total of 77 taxa belonging to 40 families were collected and 75 species were identified. The dominant family were Tetraodontidae and Pleuronectidae, and the dominant species were Arctoscopus japonicus, Konosirus punctatus, Stephanolepis cirrhifer, Thamnaconus modestus, and Trachurus japonicus. The results of the hierarchical clustering using the number of individuals of collected species showed that they are divided into three seasonal groups: Group A (Jan.~Apr.), Group B (May~Jun., Nov.~Dec.), Group C (Jul.~Oct.). The sea surface temperature (SST) was higher than the results of previous studies in winter and spring, and species composition in spring have changed from cold-water species to the warm-water species, recently. The species composition has become similar to the that of southern Gangwon-do regions (Samcheok and Gangneung) of the previous studies. The species diversity of family Tetraodontidae has increased, which is estimated to have an effect on increase in SST and the quantity of entering the East Sea. Therefore, we assumed that the change of species composition is related to the extension of northern distribution limits and survival temperature, and abundant preys. Therefore, it is necessary that an efficient resource management policy as well as the ways of commercially use of migratory warm-water fish, rapidly.
A puffer fish Fugu flavidus Li, Wang et Wang of Family Tetraodontidae was studied for the first time in Korea. Specimens were obtained from fish markets in Kunsan and Mokpo in February 1985 and June 1989. The Fugu flavidus is similar to F. obscurus and F. niphobles in morphometric characters, but differs from them in dorsal part of the body : yellowish-brown or greenish-brown, and covered with many round white spots which are clear in young and become indistinct as the fish grow. A new Korean name "Hwangjombok" is proposed for the F. flavidus.
The whitespotted puffer, Arothron hispidus (Linnaeus, 1785), of the family Tetraodontidae were collected by an Koheung Peninsula in July 2003. This species is color of the body; covered with black and the spots on the body is white color. white. Dorsal fin rays 11~12; pectoral fin rays 17; anal fin rays 10~11; caudal fin rays 5+6=11; vertebrae 8+10=18. Measurement for five specimen (195.0~265.3 mm SL) in hundredths of standard length; head length 36.8%; pectoral fin length 13.4%; dorsal fin length 11.6%; caudal peduncle length 15.0%; caudal peduncle depth 13.7%. This is ventral postclavicle, exposed in hundredths of length 6.14~6.75; verterbrae 18; dorsal pterygiophores formula $7{\ast}1231$; number of dorsal pterygiophores 7.
