These studies were conducted to investigate development of chemical resistance in two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) trough single selection for a given period of time with five acaricides including carbophenothion and ethion of organo-phosphate compound, dicofol of organo-chlorine compound, cyhexatin of organo-tin compound, biphenthrin of synthetic pyrethroid compound; and to examine cross-resistance among the acaricides to the selected populations. The development of chemical resistance of two-spotted spider mite was greatly varied under single selection of the each five acaricides. The carbophenothion- and the ethion-populations at the 22nd and the 24th selected generations showed 156- and 64.1-fold resistant levels, respectively, as compared with the susceptible population. However, the dicofol population at the 28th selected generation exhibited 39.7-fold resistant level, and the biphenthrin population at the 24th selected generation revealed 25.2-fold resistant level, while the cyhexatin population at the 20th selected generation showed 13-fold resistant level. The carbophenothion-selected population showed high cross-resistance to ethion, and low cross-resistance to dicofol and biphenthrin. The ethion-selected population revealed also high cross-resistance to carbophenothion. The dicofol-or the biphenthrin-selected populations, however, exhibited moderate cross-resistance to carbophenothion and ethion. Meantime, the cyhexatin-selected population showed high cross-resistance to ethion and carbophenothion.
The comparative toxicity of abamectin to the predatory mite, Amblyseius womersleyi Schicha and the spider mites, Tetranychus urticae Koch and T. kanzawai Kishida was evaluated by leaf disc method. Abamectin was much less toxic to A. womersleyi than to the spider mites. Although survival rate of adult females of A. womersleyi tended to decrease with increasing abamectin concentration, 8-78% of predators remained alive at concentrations of 0.38-6 ppm. Likewise, reproduction was significantly reduced with increasing abamectin concentration. Abamectin neither affect the hatch of A. womersleyi eggs nor the development of surviving immature predators. Survival of immature predators decreased with increasing abamectin concentration. However, 42-90% of immature predators reached adulthood at 0.38-3 ppm. Adult female predators survived on a diet of spider mites intoxicated with abamectin, although their fecundity and the sex-ratio of the progeny were significantly affected. Abamectin at selective sublethal concentrations (0.38-0.75 ppm) could he of value in adjusting predatorlprey ratios in integrated management of T. urticae and T. kanzawai.

Biological control of Tetranychus urticae by Phytoseiulus persimilis was carried out on tropical plant (Erythrina caffra, Phytolacca dioica) from April to July. Experiments were conducted at Tropical Plant Resources Research Center of Korea National Arboretum. Phytoseiulus persimilis (200 individual/tree) was released once (12. May) to control Tetranychus urticae. We measured the density of leaf-feeding T. urticae at intervals of approximately 2weeks after introducing P. persimilis. The densities of T. urticae were suppressed 10%, in Erythrina caffra and 49% in Phytolacca dioicas after 2 weeks introducing them.

Fumigation of fruits and vegetables during quarantine and pre-shipment(QPS) treatment should be effective with a shorter fumigation time to minimize phytotoxicity. In this research study, a shorter fumigation time, 2 hours exposure which is shorter than that of the current commercial fumigation procedures using a lower dose of ethyl formate (EF) mixed with phosphine (PH3) on strawberry was investigated. The reciprocal effect between EF and PH3 against nymphs and adult Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Tetranychus urticae (Koch) was evaluated. In addition, L(Ct)50 and L(Ct)99 of EF only and EF mixed with PH3 were analyzed at 5℃ and 20℃. The synergistic ratio (SR) of L(Ct)50 and L(Ct)99 for the nymph and adult stages of M. persicae were >1.0, which indicated a synergistic effect between EF and PH3. However, the SR values of L(Ct)50 and L(Ct)99 of the nymph and adult stages of T. urticae were ≤1.0 indicating that there was no synergistic effect between the two fumigants against T. urticae. Our results showed that the reciprocal effect between EF and PH3 has different effects on M. persicae and T. urticae. This could be attributed to the biological and physical differences between the class Arachnida and Insecta. The synergistic effect between EF and PH3 against M. persicae within a shorter exposure period and without phytotoxicity on fruits and vegetables will significantly benefit the horticultural industry.
Two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) is one of the major pests in apple orchards. TSSM was known to show different population dynamics depending on apple cultivars. We tested the host plant preference and fitness of TSSM on the leaves of 3 apple cultivars, Fuji, Tsugaru, and Hongro. TSSM showed higher behavioral preference to Fuji than Tsugaru and Hongro, and showed a higher fecundity in Fuji. The immature development of this mite was the shortest in Fuji and longest in Hongro. Total fecundities were not significantly different among cultivars, but daily fecundity was higher and longevity was lower in Fuji. Hongro was the less preferred cultivar for TSSM, and showed the lowest fitness by life table parameters. These results could explain the possible mechanisms of differential population dynamics among apple cultivars. Further study including diverse apple cultivars currently available in Korea could help to deploy time- and cultivar- specific IPM tactics.
Economic injury levels (EILs) and economic control threshold (ET) were estimated for the Tea red spider mite, Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida(Acari, Tetranychidae) in Rubus coreanus Miquel. T. kanzawai density increased until the early-July and thereafter decreased in all plots except the non-innoculation plot where initial density of the mite were different each 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 adults per plant branch on May 7 in 2008. And the occurrence of the densities were increased higher innoculated density than different innoculation density. The yield was decreased with increasing initial mite density and thereby the rates of yield loss was increased with increasing initial mite density. And T. kanzawai occurrence density, yields and the rates of yield loss, where initial density of the mite were different each 0, 2, 5, 10 and 20 adults per plant branch on May 8 in 2009 were similar tendency to 2008 year results. The relationship between initial T. kanzawai densities and the yield losses was well described by a linear regression, Y = 0.6545X + 3.0425 ($R^2$ = 0.93) in 2008, Y = 0.9031X + 2.0899($R^2$ = 0.96) in 2009. Based on the relationship, the number of adults per plant branch(EILs) which can cause 5% loss of yield was estimated to be approximately 3.0 in 2008 and 3.2 in 2009. And the ET was estimated to be approximately 2.4 in 2008 and 2.6 in 2009. The relationship between initial T. kanzawai densities and occurrence density of mid-May considering the best spray timing against T. kanzawai was well described by a linear regression, Y = 0.471X + 2.495($R^2$ = 0.95) in 2008, Y = 0.9938X + 3.1858($R^2$ = 0.96) in 2009. Based on the relationship, the number of adults per leaf(ET) in mid-May which can cause 5% loss of yield was estimated to be approximately 3.6 in 2008 and 5.8 in 2009.
Temperature-related parameters of Panonychus citri (McGregor) (Acarina: Tetranychidae) development were estimated and a stage-structured matrix model was developed. The lower threshold temperatures were estimated as $8.4^{\circ}C$ for eggs, $9.9^{\circ}C$ for larvae, $9.2^{\circ}C$ for protonymphs, and $10.9^{\circ}C$ for deutonymphs. Thermal constants were 113.6, 29.1, 29.8, and 33.4 degree days for eggs, larvae, protonymphs, and deutonymphs, respectively. Non-linear development models were established for each stage of P. citri. In addition, temperature-dependent total fecundity, age-specific oviposition rate, and age-specific survival rate models were developed for the construction of an oviposition model. P. citri age was categorized into five stages to construct a matrix model: eggs, larvae, protonymphs, deutonymphs and adults. For the elements in the projection matrix, transition probabilities from an age class to the next age class or the probabilities of remaining in an age class were obtained from development rate function of each stage (age classes). Also, the fecundity coefficients of adult population were expressed as the products of adult longevity completion rate (1/longevity) by temperature-dependent total fecundity. To evaluate the predictability of the matrix model, model outputs were compared with actual field data in a cool early season and hot mid to late season in 2004. The model outputs closely matched the actual field patterns within 30 d after the model was run in both the early and mid to late seasons. Therefore, the developed matrix model can be used to estimate the population density of P. citri for a period of 30 d in citrus orchards.
Historical changes of population abundances of European red mite (ERM), Panonychus ulmi (Koch), and two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae (Koch) (Acari: Tetranychidae), were described in selected apple orchards in the National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI, Suwon, Korea), based on research reports of the NHRI from 1958 to 1998. ERM was an abundant species up to 1970, and TSSM became a dominant species after 1980. The change occurred around mid 1970. Three hypotheses were made to explain the change: TSSM competitively replaces ERM, ground cover weeds are a major influencing factor on movement of TSSM (TSSM movement into trees is accelerated by destroying weeds), and ERM and TSSM populations are regulated by natural enemy complexes when the orchard system is not disrupted. And long-term results of the interaction between two species were projected according to the combination of different orchard management strategies: pesticide sprays (non-selective toxic pesticide spray : heavy pesticide pressure (HPP), and selective soft pesticide spray = low pesticide pressure (LPP)) and weed control methods (grass planting, and clean culture system with herbicides). In the HPP and grass planting system, ERMs are abundant because ERM can avoid competition with TSSM as movement of TSSM to trees are restricted, and natural enemy complexes are destroyed by toxic pesticides. In the HPP and clean culture system, TSSMs are abundant because TSSM moves to trees from early season and competitively replaces ERM. In the LPP and grass planting system, ERMs are abundant because movement of TSSM to trees is reduced, but they do not build up a high population density since their densities are regulated by natural enemy complexes. In the LPP and clean culture system, TSSM moves to trees and competes with ERM, but the competition pressure is reduced because population densities of mites are regulated in a lower level by natural enemy complexes. So, ERM can occurs in late season. Thus, two species can coexist temporarily with more ERM in early season and more TSSM in late season. TSSM abundant phenomenon presented in this study can be partially explained as a result of long-term interaction between ERM and TSSM under the HPP and clean culture system.

The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), is one of the most important pest species devastating many horticultural and ornamental crops and fruit trees. Difficulty in managing this mite is largely attributed to its ability to develop resistance to many important acaricides. Development of 3,700-folds resistance to etoxazole was found in the population of T. urticae collected from rose greenhouses in Buyeo, Chungnam Province in August 2000. This population has been selected for eleven years with etoxazole (over 500 times), and increased over 5,000,000-folds in resistance as compared with susceptible strain. Also, etoxazole-resistant strain was shown to be maternally inherited. The objective of this study was to determine whether resistance of T. urticae to etoxazole was linked with point mutations in the mitochondrial gene. DNA sequencing of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COX1), COX2, COX3, cytochrome b (CYTB), NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (ND1), ND2, ND3, ND4, ND5, and ND6 were analyzed by comparing two etoxazole-susceptible and etoxazole-resistant strains. As a result, differences were not detected between the nucleotide sequences of two strains within a mitochondrial gene.

The potential of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis (Acarina : Phytoseiidae) to control two spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae (Acarina : Tetranychidae) was investigated on sustainable strawberry fields in Jeonnam area. The density of T. urticae increased from 4th and 7th weeks after single and two timings release P. persimilis, respectively. On the three timings of release plot, number(density) of T. urticae on a leaf maintained fewer than 10 during the 15 weeks after release. In the 1,000 release of P. persimilis per $100m^2$ plot, P. persimilis could not suppress T. urticae. In the 2,000 release plot, P. persimilis could suppress T. urticae with low density which was the similar in the 3,000 release plot. Two-spotted spider mite, T. urticae, occurred from late March and increased density in Hampyeong area. In the P. persimilis released field, T. urticae inhibited continuously after release. In Boseong area, density of P. persimilis increased 50 per 10 leaves through increasing of T. urticae. Percent of occurrence of T. urticae showed high $10.5{\sim}75.5%$ in none-release predatory mite but not high in release treatment. T. urticae on sustainable strawberry field could be inhibited by P. persimilis.
