  • A multitude of overlay network designs for resilient routing, multicasting, quality of service, content distribution, storage, and object location have been proposed. Overlay networks offer several attractive features, including ease of deployment, flexibility, adaptivity, and an infrastructure for collaboration among hosts. In this paper, we explore cooperation among co-existing, possibly heterogeneous, overlay networks. We discuss a spectrum of cooperative forwarding and information sharing services, and investigate the associated scalability, heterogeneity, and security problems. Motivated by these services, we design Synergy, a utility-based overlay internetworking architecture that fosters overlay cooperation. Our architecture promotes fair peering relationships to achieve synergism. Results from Internet experiments with cooperative forwarding overlays indicate that our Synergy prototype improves delay, throughput, and loss performance, while maintaining the autonomy and heterogeneity of individual overlay networks.

  • The Computer Interchange of Museum Information (CIMI), operating from 1990-2003, was charged with creating and introducing the international museum community to the concept of adopting metadata industry standards. The CIMI consortium exceeded its original mission by; creating a standards framework, profile, testbeds, important metadata publications, free downloadable metadata software and protocols, and providing instrumental guidance and support in development of new projects. However, CIMI's emphasis on the importance and utility of a standards-based approach and the necessity for implementing the CIMI Standards Framework is probably its most important achievement. During CIMI's tenure, museums reaped the benefits by learning how to apply the model and standards to meet their individual needs while not having to invent new ones or bear the cost of software development. Although CIMI operations ceased in 2003, its impacts on museum related metadata application and research were unprecedented in that it provided the standards prototype and foundations on which to build. This paper discusses what CIMI bequeathed to the next generation of museum metadata field developers and describes the anticipated realm of future projects and advancement.

  • Consolidating servers into a virtualized system increases entire system utilization, while suffers from performance degradation due to the additional virtualization layer. In this paper, we proposed a performance evaluation methodology for comparing virtualized systems with native non-virtualized systems. We defined a system waste rate per consolidated throughput as a metric, and described the method for calculating system waste rate and consolidated throughput for both of virtualized systems and non-virtualized systems. Using the proposing performance evaluation methodology, we established testbeds, evaluated their performance, and compared the metrics of both systems. As a result of the evaluation, we could show the appropriateness of our methodology and analyze the effect of the application characteristics.

  • This study addressed the process to construct, operate, verify the test beds, which had been equipped with a variety of core technologies such as WAVE, Road-Radar, Smart Tolling developed by Smart Highway Project. We have met our research goals, but there were limitations to secure the performance and user feedback because of small scale and short operating time. So, we will enhance user safety, convenience and comfort by accumulating and analyzing big data then improving testbeds and related technologies through subsequent research projects for a long time.

  • An all-optical encryption system built on the basis of electrical logic circuit design principles is proposed, using semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) exclusive or (XOR) logic gates. Numerical techniques (steady-state and dynamic) were employed in a sequential manner to optimize the system parameters, speeding up the overall design process. The results from both numerical and experimental testbeds show that the encoding/decoding of the optical signal can be achieved at a 10 Gbps data rate with a conventional SOA cascade without serious degradation in the data quality.

  • Since nanofluids (NFs), which are a mixture of a small amount of nanoparticles and a bulk liquid solvent, were first proposed by Stephen Choi at the Argonne National Lab in 1995, they have been considered for use in many technical studies of power cooling systems and their practical application due to their high thermal conductivity and heat transfer coefficients compared to conventional coolants. Although nanofluids are a well-known form of engineering fluid that show great promise for use in future cooling systems, their underlying physics as demonstrated in experiments remain unclear. One proven method of determining the heat transfer performance of nanofluids is measuring the concentration of nanoparticles in a mixture. However, it is experimentally inefficient to build testbeds to systematically observe particle distributions on a nanoscale. In this paper, we demonstrate the distribution of nanoparticles under a temperature gradient in a solution using molecular dynamics simulations. First, temperature profiles based on substrate temperature are introduced. Following this, the radial pair distribution functions of pairs of nanoparticles, solvents, and substrates are calculated. Finally, the distribution of nanoparticles in different heating regions is determined.

  • The Horizon Run 4 is a cosmological N-body simulation designed for the study of coupled evolution between galaxies and large-scale structures of the Universe, and for the test of galaxy formation models. Using 63003 gravitating particles in a cubic box of Lbox = 3150 h−1Mpc, we build a dense forest of halo merger trees to trace the halo merger history with a halo mass resolution scale down to Ms = 2.7 × 1011h−1M. We build a set of particle and halo data, which can serve as testbeds for comparison of cosmological models and gravitational theories with observations. We find that the FoF halo mass function shows a substantial deviation from the universal form with tangible redshift evolution of amplitude and shape. At higher redshifts, the amplitude of the mass function is lower, and the functional form is shifted toward larger values of ln(1/σ). We also find that the baryonic acoustic oscillation feature in the two-point correlation function of mock galaxies becomes broader with a peak position moving to smaller scales and the peak amplitude decreasing for increasing directional cosine μ compared to the linear predictions. From the halo merger trees built from halo data at 75 redshifts, we measure the half-mass epoch of halos and find that less massive halos tend to reach half of their current mass at higher redshifts. Simulation outputs including snapshot data, past lightcone space data, and halo merger data are available at http://sdss.kias.re.kr/astro/Horizon-Run4.

  • Most of sensor networks are difficult to be debugged, verified, and upgraded once they are deployed in the fields, for they are usually deployed in real world and large scale. Therefore, before deploying the sensor networks, we should test and verify them sufficiently in realistic testbeds. However, since we need to control physical environments which interact with sensor networks, it takes much of time and cost to test and verify sensor networks at the level of resource-constrained sensor nodes in such environments. This paper proposes an efficient software framework for evaluating and verifying sensor networks in the view points of network and application operations (i.e., accuracy of sensing algorithms). Applying the proposed software framework to the development of a simulator for a smart parking application based on wireless sensor network, this paper verifies the feasibility of the proposed framework.
