  • Starting characteristics of the axi-symmetric second throat exhaust diffuser (STED) with zero-secondary flows are numerically investigated. Renolds-Average Navier-Stokes equations with a standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model incorporated with enhanced wall treatment are solved to simulate the diffusing evolutions of the nozzle plume. Minimum (optimum) starting pressure difference of 20$\sim$25% between 1-D theory and the measured data validated from previous results[5] is also applied to predict the range of an effective diffuser expansion ratio (Ad/At) in this system.

  • The implosion phenomena of pressure vessels operating in deep water under extremely high external pressure have been well known. The drastic energy release to ambient field in the form of pressure pulse is accompanied with catastrophic collapse of shell structure. Such a proximity shock wave could be a serious threat to the structural integrity of adjacent submerged body and several suspected accidents have been reported. In this study, basic research for the occurrence and development of shock wave due to implosion was carried out. The mechanism of pressure pulse generation and energy dissipation were investigated, and a simplified kinematic model to approximate the collapse modes of circular tubes which can be generated by external pressure and implosion was examined. Using the simplified kinematic model, the process of energy dissipation was formulated, and the magnitude of released pressure shock wave was estimated quantitatively. To investigate the validity of developed kinematic model and shock wave estimation process, the results from a nonlinear FE analysis code and collapse test carried out using pressure chamber were compared with the results from the developed kinematic model.

  • In this study, a numerical approach was utilized to observe the phenomena in the ground combustion test of a gas generator for a ducted rocket with a plunger-type flow control device. The design factors were also identified through the analysis. It was observed that the pressure increase without the adhesion of the combustion product at the discharge pipe was quite similar to the analysis assuming a cone-shaped erosive burning effect. The pressure increase in most cases was similar to the analysis results when assuming the change in discharge pipe area due to the adhesion of combustion products. Moreover, it was also established that for a given grain shape and discharge flow area, the effect of the adhesion of combustion products has a significant effect on the combustion chamber pressure for cases over n=0.45.

  • A striking feature of mitochondrial disorders is the vast heterogeneity in their clinical symptoms that ranges from a single organ to severe multisystem involvement. Though a variety of ocular symptoms such as ptosis, pigmentary retinal degeneration, external ophthalmoplegia, and optic nerve atrophy can occur in association with mitochondrial cytopathies, progressive bilateral cataracts are rare among their ocular findings. A 5-year-old girl with no previous medical history came to our hospital presenting symptoms of seizure. She started showing progressive developmental regression, increased seizure frequency, hypotonia, general weakness, dysphagia and decreased vision. Lactic acidosis was noted in metabolic screening test and we confirmed mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I defect in spectrophotometric enzyme assay using the muscle tissue. Progressive bilateral cataracts then developed and were fully evident at the age of 7. She underwent cataract extraction with posterior chamber lens implantation. We are reporting a case of mitochondrial respiratory chain defect with multiorgan involvements including bilateral progressive cataract, an uncommon ocular manifestation. Ophthalmologic evaluation is highly recommended not to overlook the possible ocular manifestations in mitochondrial disorders.

  • Background: Timosaponin AIII (TA3) is a steroidal saponin extracted from Anemarrhena asphodeloides. Here, we investigated the anticancer effects of TA3 in MG63 human osteosarcoma cells. TA3 attenuates migration and invasion of MG63 cells via regulations of two matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), MMP-2 and MMP-9, which are involved with cancer metastasis in various cancer cells. TA3 reduced enzymatic activities and transcriptional expressions of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in MG63 cells. TA3 also inhibited Src, focal adhesion kinase, extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2), c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), p38, ${\beta}-catenin$, and cAMP response element binding signaling, which regulate migration and invasion of cells. TA3 induced apoptosis of MG63 cells via regulations of caspase-3, caspase-7, and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). Then, we tested several ginsenosides to be used in combination with TA3 for the synergistic anticancer effects. We found that ginsenosides Rb1 and Rc have synergistic effects on TA3-induced apoptosis in MG63 cells. Methods: We investigated the anticancer effects of TA3 and synergistic effects of various ginseng saponins on TA3-induced apoptosis in MG63 cells. To test antimetastatic effects, we performed wound healing migration assay, Boyden chamber invasion assays, gelatin zymography assay, and Western blot analysis. Annexin V/PI staining apoptosis assay was performed to determine the apoptotic effect of TA3 and ginsenosides. Results: TA3 attenuated migration and invasion of MG63 cells and induced apoptosis of MG63 cells. Ginsenosides Rb1 and Rc showed the synergistic effects on TA3-induced apoptosis in MG63 cells. Conclusions: The results strongly suggest that the combination of TA3 and the two ginsenosides Rb1 and Rc may be a strong candidate for the effective antiosteosarcoma agent.

  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess coronal discoloration induced by the following intracanal medicaments: calcium hydroxide (CH), a mixture of CH paste and chlorhexidine gel (CH/CHX), and triple antibiotic paste (3Mix). Materials and Methods: Seventy extracted single-canal teeth were selected. Access cavities were prepared and each canal was instrumented with a rotary ProTaper system. The specimens were randomly assigned to CH, CH/CHX, and 3Mix paste experimental groups (n = 20 each) or a control group (n = 10). Each experimental group was randomly divided into 2 subgroups (A and B). In subgroup A, medicaments were only applied to the root canals, while in subgroup B, the root canals were completely filled with medicaments and a cotton pellet dipped in medicament was also placed in the pulp chamber. Spectrophotometric readings were obtained from the mid-buccal surface of the tooth crowns immediately after placing the medicaments (T1) and at 1 week (T2), 1 month (T3), and 3 months (T4) after filling. The ${\Delta}E$ was then calculated. Data were analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), 3-way ANOVA, and the $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ post hoc test. Results: The greatest color change (${\Delta}E$) was observed at 3 months (p < 0.0001) and in 3Mix subgroup B (p = 0.0057). No significant color change occurred in the CH (p = 0.7865) or CH/CHX (p = 0.1367) groups over time, but the 3Mix group showed a significant ${\Delta}E$ (p = 0.0164). Conclusion: Intracanal medicaments may induce tooth discoloration. Use of 3Mix must be short and it must be carefully applied only to the root canals; the access cavity should be thoroughly cleaned afterwards.

  • This paper presents a method to deice concrete pavement with carbon nanotube(CNT) as an heating material so as to avoid the adverse effects of conventional deicing method such as salt on the structure, function and environment. To this end, laboratory tests integrated with numerical simulations were conducted. In the laboratory tests, the CNT was embedded inside the concrete slab and generated the heat up to the target temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ in the freezer at temperature of $-10^{\circ}C$. Then, the surface temperature was measured to investigate how far the heat transfers on the surface at temperature of above $0^{\circ}C$. Also, three different spacings of 15, 20 and 30cm between CNTs were conducted to determine the maximum allowable spacing of CNT. Along with these experimental tests, heat transferring analysis conducted to validate the test results.

  • This study focuses on the numerical simulations of the cone penetration tests in a sand ground. The mechanical responses of sand were described using the modified Mohr Coulomb plasticity model based on the critical state soil mechanics. In the plasticity model, the dilatancy angle was not a constant, but a function of the distance to the critical state line from the current state of void ratio and mean effective stress. To simulate cone penetration tests numerically, this study relied on Lagrangian finite element method under the axisymmetric condition. To enable penetration of the cone penetrometer without tearing elements along the symmetric axis, the penetration guide concept was adopted in this study. The results of numerical simulations on the calibration chamber cone penetration tests had good agreement with the experimental results.

  • In this paper, we have studied a development of a humidity sensor using a microwave sensor based on a microstrip defected ground structure coated with polyvinyl alcohol. A high-sensitivity microwave sensor, which is sensitive to the changes in the permittivity of the material under test, is designed by adding an interdigital capacitor-shaped defected ground structure to the ground plane of a microstrip line. Polyvinyl alcohol, a polymer material whose permittivity varies depending on humidity, is coated with a thin thickness on the defected ground structure of the proposed microwave sensor, and the changes in the resonance frequency and magnitude of the transmission coefficient for the microwave sensor according to humidity are measured. When relative humidity increases from 40% to 80% in 10% increments at a temperature of 25 degrees using a temperature/humidity chamber, the resonant frequency of the transmission coefficient decreases from 1.475 GHz to 1.449 GHz, and the magnitude is increased from -32.90 dB to -25.67 dB.

  • Jawarishe Jalinoos (JJ) is an orally used formulation available in semisolid dosage form, prepared with powdered plant materials mixed in honey or sugar syrup. It has many admirable pharmacological effects and used in Unani medicine to treat various acute and chronic disorders since ancient times. The ICH Harmonised Tripartite Guideline stated that photostability testing should be an essential part of stability testing to confirm that light exposure does not result in an unacceptable change in drugs substance and finished products. To date, the effect of light on JJ is not studied, in this study photostability evaluation of JJ was carried out. The test sample was manufactured with genuine ingredients in the in-door pharmacy of the National Institute of Unani Medicine. JJ was packed in two transparent polyethylene terephthalate airtight containers. The first sample was analysed at zero-day and the second sample was placed in a stability chamber subjected to light challenge with an overall illumination of 1.2 million lux hours combined with near ultraviolet energy of 200-watt hours per square meter by using option 2, along with 30±2℃ temperature and relative humidity 70±5%. Analysis of both finished products showed no considerable changes in organoleptic characters. Less than 5% variation was observed in physicochemical parameters. HPTLC fingerprinting showed justifiable variation. Microbial load and specific counts were within the limit prescribed by WHO. As no unacceptable changes were noted in JJ subjecting to light challenge, it is concluded that JJ is a photostable Unani compound formulation.
