  • In this paper we proposed channel models for terrestrial ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) DTV (Digital Television) system in South Korea. For the purpose of this model, we research on propagation model involved in terrestrial DTV system and analyze out field test data of terrestrial DTV broadcasting carried out in korean Broadcasting System. Using the measured values of received field strength, newly proposed Path-loss models have more correctly than that of conventional Path-loss models. This models can be utilized usefully for the efficient ATSC DTV system implementation requiring accurate link-budget calculation

  • In this paper, we propose an additional data transmission scheme using multiple-antennas with backward compatibility for legacy ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) terrestrial DTV (digital television) receivers. The proposed scheme improves the data rate and bit error rate performance compared to the conventional single antenna transmission scheme for additional data. Also, the proposed scheme guarantees backward compatibility for legacy ATSC DTV receivers.

  • In a Single Frequency Network (SFN) for Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) terrestrial digital television (DTV) system, the interferences induced by the multiple transmitters and/or repeaters using same frequency are unavoidable. To ease the interference handing in the SFN for ATSC DTV system, transmitter identification (TxID) signal is recommended in the ATSC terrestrial DTV system. The TxID signal is embedded in the ATSC DTV signal and transmitted from each transmitter and repeater within the SFN and in ATSC recommended practice (RP) A/111, Kasami sequence is recommended as the TxID signal. In this paper, we propose an additional data transmission scheme using the TxID signal. In the proposed scheme, the Kasami sequence not only acts as the conventional TxID of the SFN for ATSC terrestrial DTV system but also carriers the additional data bits on its polarity and the code phase.

  • ATSC terrestrial DTV system can support high data rates for HDTV(High Definition Television) service, but it suffers from significant performance degradation caused by multipath fading. Thus, it is necessary to analyze multipath fading effects in order to enhance the DTV reception performance. Generally, DTV channel profile can be obtained by auto-correlation between reference pseudo random signal and received DTV signal. However, in the ATSC terrestrial DTV system, the estimation performance of DTV channel profile may be decreased due to the VSB modulation features. In this paper, improved DTV channel profile measurement technique is analyzed and proposed.

The Analysis of TxID Signal's Effect to Legacy Receivers in ATSC DTV System (ATSC DTV 시스템에서 TxID 신호가 기존 수신기에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • When we implement the single frequency network (SFN) in ATSC terrestrial DTV system, there is an interference problem to DTV receivers due to the use of same frequency channel among transmitters and repeaters. To resolve this problem, it is recommended to adopt the transmitter identification signals in transmitting equipments. In this paper, we analyzed the influence suffered by legacy DTV receivers when the TxID signal is added to the DTV transmitting signals and the results were further verified by computer simulation, laboratory test and field test. The above tests show that if the TxID signal is added to the level of -30dB compared to the original DTV signal, the TOV(Threshold Of Visibility) increment in legacy receivers is about 0.17 dB. It means that we can insert and transmit the TxID signal in ATSC terrestrial DTV system without making the negative effect to the legacy DTV receivers.

  • In Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) terrestrial digital television (DTV) systems, additional very low-rate data can be transmitted by modulating the amplitude and polarity of the transmitter identification (TxID) signal. Although the additional data transmission scheme offers reliable transmission and has a very large coverage area, it has a limitation on the data rate. In this paper, we propose a novel additional data transmission scheme based on the TxID sequences of the ATSC DTV system and Walsh modulation. The proposed scheme not only increases the data rate significantly, but also offers a virtually identical coverage area compared to a conventional scheme.

  • The 8-VSB modulation technology developed by ATSC was adapted for national terrestrial DTV broadcasting. It uses same bandwidth of 6㎒ as the one of NTSC TV broadcasting. The simulcast on the both of analog and digital is mandated for some period, some shortage within the limited frequency resource . ATSC transmission technology is excellent in long distance broadcasting, but it is even poorer than other transmission technology In mobile receiving. The design of transmission system in the ATSC broadcasting is food enough with the provision of wide area service without Interference from adjacent channel.   • This paper proposes the method of frequency synchronization using the spectrum correlation in ATSC terrestrial DTV system. If the spectrum around pilot is severely distorted by multipath or mobile reception environment, the conventional algorithm using the pilot signal makes the estimation error of the frequency offset. Because the proposed algorithm acquires frequency synchronization using the correlation between the received specalm and the standard spectrum without the use of pilot, the proposed method can acquire frequency synchronization faster and more accurate than conventional algorithm. And this paper proposes new method for ATSC frequency synchronization without the use of pilot.

  • 국내 지상파 DTV 방송 시스템의 국가표준인 북미의 ATSC 표준은 최근 이동 방송을 위한 표준 제정 작업이 1 차 완료된 이후 추가적인 성능 확장을 위한 표준화 작업이 진행중에 있으며, 한편으로는 차세대 방송 서비스를 위한 진화를 준비하고 있다. 본 고에서는 전 세계 지상파 DTV 방송 표준의 가장 큰 두 개의 축을 이루는 ATSC 및 DVB 두 기관에서 진행되고 있는 표준화 동향 중 국내 지상파 DTV 표준이 준용하는 ATSC의 표준화 동향을 정리함으로써 국내 지상파 DTV 방송 기술 및 표준의 개발 방향을 잡는 데 참고가 될 수 있는 정보를 제공하고자 한다.
