Degree of personality recognition by dental hygienists (치과위생사의 인성 인식정도)

  • Objectives: In this study, by a professional who provides medical services by gauging the level of personality recognition among dental hygienists, the basic data is provided to suggest the need for personality education in dental hygienists' education. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted with the members attending conservative education in 2018, and the results of the analysis of the total of 348 members were as follows. Results: The average age of the participants was 31.6 years, and their average career duration was 9.4 years. The total personality score was 3.74 points. The highest score was 4.10 points for conscience, and the lowest score was 2.98 points for habit. In terms of differences between general characteristics and personality domains, the personality perception score was statistically significantly higher for hygienists who were married than for those with a higher education level and working at a higher hospital level. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the personality domains and the highest competence domain (r=0.790) in relation to total personality. The higher the competency, the higher the total score. Conclusions: Personality is not a part of being formed in the short term. It should be recognized that it is important to recognize the importance of personality in the dental hygiene education curriculum and to provide opportunities to develop personality through systematic programs.

Perceptual differences in internet oral health information use between dental hygienists and patients (인터넷 구강건강정보 이용에 대한 환자와 치과위생사의 인식비교)

  • Objectives: To analyze whether there are perceptual differences in internet oral health information use between ordinary people who underwent dental treatments and dental hygienists. Second, the study aimed to analyze related issues, and, third, to find a developmental direction to provide fundamental information for developing patient-customized websites to improve dental services to suit contemporary needs. Methods: From September 1 to September 30, 2018, a questionnaire survey was conducted, with 367 participants (209 dental hygienists and 149 patients) in order to analyze their objective agreement, subjective congruence, and accuracy. As a study tool, the questionnaire consisted of 11 items about the perception of internet oral health information use and 11 on the estimated perceptions of both groups in order to compare their perceptions and estimates of each other. Results: Objective agreement was analyzed and, as a result, dental hygienists and patients were found to demonstrate similar results in terms of their perceptions of internet oral health information use. With regard to subjective agreement, the study subjects either underestimated or overestimated internet oral health information use more than they perceived. In terms of accuracy, dental hygienists and patients had different perceptions regarding internet oral health information use. Therefore, accuracy was somewhat low. Conclusions: In order to improve individuals' self-care ability and increase therapeutic instructional adherence for oral healthcare, it is necessary to apply internet oral health information properly to each patient's individual oral state.

A study on the self-evaluation of job performance and creativity of dental hygienists (치과위생사 직무와 개인의 창의성에 의한 자기평가 연구)

  • Objectives : The awareness of health care need increasing attention from the public along with changing professional human-resources activity. As there are increasing social demand for the roles and professionalism of dental hygienists, the purpose of this study was to examine the job performance, creativity and organizational climate of dental hygienists by their own self-diagnostic evaluation in an attempt to help enhance their work ability. Methods : According to the data released as August 2008 by the Dental Association and public health centers in Gwangju, 735 dental hygienists worked at 425 dental clinics. The subjects in this study were 156 dental hygienists at 85 dental clinics who were selected by proportionate sampling method from among the dental hygienists. After an interview survey was conducted in person, the answer sheets from 132 respondents were analyzed except 24 incomplete ones. The questionnaire used in this study consisted of 49 items. A five-point Likert scale was used and SPSS 12.0 program was analyzed the data. Results : 1. As a result of checking the types of works, treatment cooperation(54%), and oral health education often(45%), They weren't responsible for preventive treatment(42%). 2. When they made a self-diagnostic evaluation of creativity and organizational climate, they put the highest value on their autonomy(2.21), followed by positive attitude(2.10). Out of seven organizational climate, challenging spirits(2.81) ranked highest, followed by reliability(2.66). 3. Major management eopmubyeol individual creativity compared with three business relationships and a positive attitude in the case of the high group received oral health education and care management services in a group doing the most was General office work and office assistance work in the medical assistance group that was doing business primarily. 4. In the relationship between self-assesment score and three performance duties, Positive difference was noted in the group with positive attitude and elevated autonomy in terms of performing oral health education. Conclusions : As a result, individual creativity and organization of the atmosphere, each detail, through analysis of the self-assessment model, developed guide on the investigation by doing a dental hygienist, a unique business promotion and Enlargement of the study suggested the need to be considered is.

The Analysis on the Perception of Medical Accident and Dispute of Dental Hygienist (치과위생사의 의료사고 및 의료분쟁에 대한 인식정도 분석)

  • he purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of dental hygienists about medical malpractice and dispute. The subjects in this study were 206 dental hygienists at dental clinics, on whom a survey was conducted. After SPSSWIN 14.0 program was utilized to analyze the collected data, the following findings were given: 1. As for experiences of being complained from patients by age, the dental hygienists who were at the age of 21 to 23 made up the largest age group (39.2%) who had ever meet patients who had grievances. By career, those who had worked for less than a year constituted the greatest group (30.4%) who had the same experiences. It indicated that the dental hygienists who were younger and had a less career had been more complained from patients. 2. In terms of problems posed by patients, scaling came into question the most (14.5%), followed by diagnosis (14.4%), impression (12.9%) and radiography (11.0%). 3. Regarding perception of scaling treatment, 90.8 percent, the greatest percentage, kept records of patients about scaling. As to how to do that, 34.5 percent, the largest percentage, wrote it down and then signed their name. Concerning the way of explaining how to take care of oral health, 82.5 percent gave an explanation without any prints. 4. As to knowledge on the medical law, they got a mean of 12.34 out of possible 16 points. 5. Concerning the necessity of education about the prevention of medical accidents and countermeasures, 70.4 percent felt the strong and urgent need for that.

Investigation of Dental Hygienists' Practice about Rules on Dental Disputes Prevention

  • Background: This study analyzed the practice of dental medical dispute prevention rules of dental hygienists to present an improvement plan for improving perceived importance and practice and provide data for the development of effective medical dispute prevention programs. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted targeting dental hygienists who were providing assistance at dental hospitals and dental clinics in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do regions from March 22 to April 28, 2022. The questionnaire collected from 273 dental hygienists consisted of eight questions on general characteristics, 30 questions on medical dispute experience, and 14 questions on medical dispute prevention. Results: Complaints showed a high experience rate in 'Consultation & reservation', medical disputes in 'Patient handling (unkind) related', and 'Prosthesis installation and cement removal'. In both the importance and practice of medical dispute prevention rules, 'Preservation of medical records and other medical-related data' was high, and 'Management of patients on standby for a long time' was low in terms of practice. 'Lack of time' and 'Lack of manpower' were cited as reasons for not resolving dental treatment disputes. The importance of dental dispute prevention rules was found to be significant according to age and position, and it was also found to affect the level of practice. Conclusion: Seventy-six-point six percent of the respondents said that education on the prevention of medical disputes was necessary, although they lacked recognition of prevention rules compared to their perceptions and experiences. This study suggested specifying prevention rules in dental hygiene subjects and expanding education, improvement of dental treatment system, revise the law on the range of work to improve the recognition and practice of prevention rules.

Analysis of dental radiography phantom practice of dental hygiene students (치위생과 학생의 치과방사선 팬텀활용 촬영실습 분석)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate dental hygiene students' recognition of safety management and phantom practice in dental radiology. Methods: The study subjects were 409 students in six regions who completed a dental radiology practice course and had on-job experience more than once. After understanding the study purpose and contents, they answered a questionnaire. The main jobs in dental radiology were analyzed. Results: As a result, regarding the most difficult aspects of dental radiology practice, "it is impossible to irradiate the mouth directly with X-rays" was the most common response (29.1%). Regarding the question "what is the main role of students in dental radiology practice?", the answer "it is shooting simulations using phantoms" accounted for 59.7% of responses. The most difficult regions in bisecting and paralleling radiography with a phantom were found to be the maxillary & mandibular molars and premolars. The most difficult technique was reported to be locating XCP maintenance to fit inside the mouth for both molars and premolars. The most difficult region to perform bitewing radiography using the phantom was the molar region (2.87), and the most difficult to perform occlusal radiography approaches were maxillary anterior general occlusal radiography (2.92) and mandibular cross-sectional occlusal radiography (3.00). Conclusions: The most technically difficult point in bitewing and occlusal radiography was the correct positioning of the vertical and horizontal angles. Radiography practice was considered to be more effective than previous mutual practice in terms of analysis of anatomical structures and patient treatment methods. Therefore, it will be necessary to improve policy regarding dental radiography practice at the department of dental hygienics and revise the necessary laws and regulations.

The implement status of dental hygiene curriculum in Korea and the comparison with the US ADA standard (국내 치위생학 교과목 운영실태 및 미국 치위생학교육 인정평가 기준과의 비교연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the improvement basis for Dental Hygiene education program by analyzing the current implement status of Dental Hygiene curriculum in Korea and comparing the status with the US ADA standard. The researcher analyzed the Dental Hygiene syllabus limiting "Dental prophxis", "Comprehensive dental hygiene" subjects only from 31 universities which offer 3 years program. The main interest was to figure the implementing status of the curriculum and to compare the actual teaching content with the CODA 2-17 standard. The results show that there are a number of problems in implementing the Dental Hygiene courses among different universities. First, there is a significant inconsistence among schools in terms of course title, total credit, hours, the ratio for theory and practice, etc. In addition, there is a big gap between the actual content of Dental Hygiene courses and the essential/required content of CODA 2-17 standard. For instance, most of the Dental Hygiene programs in Korea cover the overall assessment stage content and some of implementation stage content. However, very few programs deal with the planning and evaluation stage content. To improve these problematic circumstance a number of suggestions were made. Developing the standardized curriculum for the Dental Hygiene program might be one of the major solutions. Next, the regular accreditation and/or assessment system for the Dental Hygiene program should be developed. This research can provide the basis for the need to assess and improve the Dental Hygiene curriculum.

Awareness and educational needs on preventive dental treatment among oral health workers (구강보건인력의 예방치과진료에 대한 인식 및 교육요구도)

  • Objectives: The objective of this study is to provide basic data needed in developing an educational program designed to upgrade capacity and awareness of preventive dental treatment among oral health workers, by analyzing levels of awareness of preventive dental treatment and educational needs among dentists and dental hygienists. Methods: The collected data was analyzed with SPSS program ver. 19.0. The data was under t-test. Results: The frequency level of giving preventive dental treatment to patients among dentists and dental hygienists is below mid-point, 3 on the 5-point Likert scale. In terms of frequency level per item, scaling & polishing was ranked the highest, followed by periodontal maintenance, tooth-brushing instruction, and prescription and instruction of oral care product in descending order. On the questions asking how important preventive dental care they perceive to be, both dentists and dental hygienists perceived it to be highly important. When they were asked to rank those items by the importance of education, they considered periodontal maintenance as the most important one, followed by individual education of oral health, incremental oral health care, scaling& polishing, toothbrushing instruction, and prescription and instruction of oral care product. Respondents pointed out problems in running a preventive dental treatment program as follows: overwork, lack of dedicated workforce, un-fixed costs, and lack of necessary equipment. When they were asked to point out items needed to run such a program, the largest number of respondents indicated dedicated workforce placement, followed by improving awareness of the customer, and improving awareness of the dental workers. Conclusions: In order to effectively run a preventive dental treatment program, it is necessary for oral health workers to clearly understand the concept of it. It is also necessary to develop and operate an education program on preventive dental treatment targeting oral health professionals.

Bacterial Contamination of Digital Panoramic Dental X-Ray Equipment

  • Background: Digital panoramic dental X-ray equipment (PDX) is frequently used by patients and dental workers for diagnosis and examination in dental institutions; however, infection control has not been properly implemented. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to systematically review the potential risk of cross-infection in the dental environment by investigating the contamination level of general aerobic bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus, which are important in hospital infections, in PDX areas that people mainly contact. Methods: This survey was conducted from March to May 2023 and covered one general hospital, three dental hospitals, and nine dental clinics equipped with PDX. Bacteria samples were collected from the left-handle, right-handle, forehead support, and head side support as the patient's contact areas, as well as the X-ray exposure switch and left-click mouse button as the dental hygienist's contact areas of the PDX. The collected bacteria were spread on Petrifilm, and colonies formed after 48 hours of culture were counted. Results: General aerobic bacteria and S. aureus were detected in all areas investigated. Significant differences in bacterial counts between different regions of the PDX were observed in both groups (p<0.001). The detection rates of general aerobic bacteria (p<0.001) and S. aureus (p<0.001) were significantly higher in the contact areas of patients than those of dental hygienists. A positive correlation was observed between the forehead and the temple region in terms of general aerobic bacteria and S. aureus detection (r=1) (p<0.01). Conclusion: Taken together, the presence of many bacteria, including S. aureus, detected in PDX indicates that PDX has a potential cross-infection risk. Our results therefore highlight the need for the development of appropriate disinfection protocols for reusable medical devices such as PDX and periodic infection prevention training for hospital-related workers, including dental hygienists.

A study on the relationship of characteristics to job satisfaction among dental hygienists (치과위생사의 특성에 따른 직무만족도에 관한 조사 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the job satisfaction of dental hygienists at nine areas including professionalism. autonomy of job performance. backing system. relationship with colleagues. relationship with workers of higher and lower position. relationship with dentists. relationship with supporting departments, relationship with patients and compensation. The subjects in this study were 178 dental hygienists in dental hospitals and clinics. The survey was conducted from December. 2007 to January. 2008. Date were collected by self-administrated questionnaire. A SPSS 10.0 for Windows was used for statistical analysis. So try to for make basic data analysis recognition of enhance job satisfaction of dental hygienist. The findings of the study were as follows : 1. Regarding the relationship of career to job satisfaction. the dental hygienists who worked for one or two years were most satisfied in terms of professionalism. as they got a mean of 3.84. 2. As for connections between academic credential and job satisfaction. those who graduated from junior colleges expressed the best satisfaction at professionalism. since they got a mean of 3.75. 3. As to link between current service area and job satisfaction. the dental hygienists who worked in the region of Gyeong-nam were most gratified with professionalism. as they got a mean of 3.76. 4. Concerning relations between the type of workplace and job satisfaction. the dental hospital employees were most contented with professionalism. as they got a mean of 3.79. 5. In regard to the number of dental hygienists at current workplace and job satisfaction. those whose workplace hired 20 or 30 dental hygienists expressed the best satisfaction with the relationship with dentists. They got a mean of 3.94.
