A typical terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system requires large, expensive, and heavy hardware such as a lock-in amplifier and a function generator. In this study, we replaced the lock-in amplifier and the function generator with a single sound card built into a typical desktop computer to significantly reduce the system size, weight, and cost. The sound card serves two purposes: 1 kHz chopping signal generation and raw data acquisition. A unique software lock-in (Python coding program to eliminate noise from raw data) method was developed and successfully extracted THz time-domain signals with a signal-to-noise ratio of ~40,000 (the intensity ratio between the peak and average noise levels). The built-in sound card with the software lock-in method exhibited sufficiently good performance compared with the hardware-based method.

This paper introduces a rapid measurement technique for the stress-optic coefficient, using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. First we propose a design combining a four-point bending device with a scanning stage to streamline the loading process. Then we detail the measurement principle and outline the signal-processing algorithm. The experiments are carried out on Al2O3, a representative ceramic material. The experimental data reveal that the refractive index of Al2O3 exhibits a linear decrease with increasing stress. This work supplies an efficient method for stress measurement rooted in the stress-optic effect.

In this paper, we report THz generation and detection characteristics investigated by InGaAs semiconductor epilayers, as results of a basic study obtained from the InGaAs-based THz transmitter/receiver (Tx/Rx). High-temperature and low-temperature (LT) grown InGaAs epilayers were prepared by the molecular beam epitaxy technique for the characterization of THz generation and detection, respectively, and the surface emission based on the photo-Dember effect was tried for THz generation. THz wave was generated by irradiation of a Ti:Sapphire fs pulse laser (60 ps/83 MHz), and a LT-GaAs Rx was used for the THz detection. The frequency band shown in the spectral amplitudes Fourier-transformed from the measured current signals was ranging in 0.5~2 THz, and the signal currents were exponentially increased with the Tx beam power. The THz detection characteristics of LT-InGaAs were investigated by using an Rx with dipole (5/20 ${\mu}m$) antenna, and the cutoff frequency was ~2 THz.

Advancements in nanotechnology and novel nano materials in the past decade have provided a set of tools that can be used to design and manufacture integrated nano devices, which are capable of performing sensing, computing, data storing and actuation. In this paper, we have proposed cooperative nano communication using Power Switching Relay (PSR) Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) protocol and Time Switching Relay (TSR) WPT protocol over independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) Rayleigh fading channels in the Terahertz (THz) Gap frequency band to increase the range of transmission. Outage Probability (OP) performances for the proposed cooperative nano communication networks have been evaluated for the following scenarios: A) A single decode-and-forward (DF) relay for PSR protocol and TSR protocol, B) DF multi-relay network with best relay selection (BRS) for PSR protocol and TSR protocol, and C) DF multi-relay network with multiple DF hops with BRS for PSR protocol and TSR protocol. The results have shown that the transmission distance can be improved significantly by employing DF relays with WPT. They have also shown that by increasing the number of hops in a relay the OP performance is only marginally degraded. The analytical results have been verified by Monte-Carlo simulations.
We present the magnitude of terahertz electromagnetic pulses when femtosecond laser pulses are moving along to a dipole antenna. The dipole antenna chip has maximum 4.7 nA THz current, generated at 11 DC volt. This current is 3.4 times bigger than the current of a $300{\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ separated transmission line structure chip that has 70 DC volt. We also apply an AC square wave voltage to the dipole antenna from 0.1 volt to 10 volt for binary signals using the terahertz electromagnetic pulses.

Corals are the remains of animals that grow on warm beaches. They have been used as decorative jewels because of their variety of colors, and as medicinal materials for treating cancers, AIDS, and other therapeutic uses because of their chemical elements. Corals are mainly composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and have many air pores, tens to hundreds of micrometers in size. The refractive indices and absorption coefficients of dried sliced staghorn corals are investigated using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The measured values are similar to those for CaCO3, as expected. It is observed that a sample with a microstructure formed by air pores can guide terahertz waves. The dispersion, effective index, and loss of the guiding modes of coral core surrounded by five triangular air pores are numerically calculated. The simulated spatial distribution of the electric field of the guide mode at 1.25 THz shows the mode to be tightly confined to the core.
Metamaterials composed of split cut wire (SCW) on grounded polyimide film substrate have been investigated for the aim of electromagnetic wave absorbers operated in THz frequency band. Reflection loss and current density distributions are numerically simulated with variations of the SCW geometries using the commercial software. The minimum reflection loss lower than -20 dB has been identified at 5.5~6.5 THz. The simulated resonance frequency and reflection loss can be explained on the basis of the circuit theory of an inductance-capacitance (L-C) resonator. Dual-band absorption can be obtained by arrangement of two SCWs of different length on the top layer of the grounded substrate, which is due to multiple magnetic resonances by scaling of SCWs. With increasing the side spacing between SCWs, a more enhanced absorption peak is observed at the first resonance frequency that is shifted to a lower frequency.
We report on the first error-free terahertz (THz) wireless communication at 0.310 THz for data rates up to 8.2 Gbps using a 18-GHz-bandwidth GaAs/AlGaAs field-effect transistor as a detector. This result demonstrates that low-cost commercially-available plasma-wave transistors whose cut-off frequency is far below THz frequencies can be employed in THz communication. Wireless communication over 50 cm is presented at 1.4 Gbps using a uni-travelling-carrier photodiode as a source. Transistor integration is detailed, as it is essential to avoid any deleterious signals that would prevent successful communication. We observed an improvement of the bit error rate with increasing input THz power, followed by a degradation at high input power. Such a degradation appears at lower powers if the photodiode bias is smaller. Higher-data-rate communication is demonstrated using a frequency-multiplied source thanks to higher output power. Bit-error-rate measurements at data rates up to 10 Gbps are performed for different input THz powers. As expected, bit error rates degrade as data rate increases. However, degraded communication is observed at some specific data rates. This effect is probably due to deleterious cavity effects and/or impedance mismatches. Using such a system, realtime uncompressed high-definition video signal is successfully and robustly transmitted.

As the operating frequency of an electromagnetic wave increases, the maximum output and wavelength of the wave decreases, so that the size of the circuit cannot be reduced. As a result, the fabrication of a circuit with high power (of the order of or greater than kW range) and terahertz wave frequency band is limited, due to the problem of circuit size, to the order of ${\mu}m$ to mm. In order to overcome these limitations, we propose a source design technique for 0.1 THz~0.3 GW level with cylindrical shape (diameter ~2.4 cm). Modeling and computational simulations were performed to optimize the design of the high-power electromagnetic sources based on Cherenkov radiation generation technology using the principle of plasma wakefield acceleration with ponderomotive force and artificial dielectrics. An effective design guideline has been proposed to facilitate the fabrication of high-power terahertz wave vacuum devices of large diameter that are less restricted in circuit size through objective verification.
We performed time-domain terahertz (THz) spectroscopy to determine optical constants of highly conductive carbon nanotube (CNT) films. The CNT films have been fabricated on a flexible plastic substrate by using spin-coating or vacuum filtration. We found that the transmission of THz waves can be controlled by manipulating the thickness of the films and by post-treatments. From amplitude and phase information of the transmitted THz waves, we obtain optical constants such as refractive indices and dielectric constants of the CNT films. The frequency dependent dielectric constants show good metallic behaviors, relevant to the Drude free electron models with high plasma frequencies. It is also found that the dielectric constants are higher for the acid-treated films. Finally, the frequency dependent dielectric constants which are free from substrate effects have been demonstrated by using CNT films deposited on cellulose membranes.
