Fracture mechanics does work for concrete, provided that one uses a proper, nonlinear form of fracture mechanics in which a finite nonlinear zone at fracture front is being considered. The fracture process zone is a region ahead of a traction-free crack, and the development of model of fracture process zone is most important to describe fracture phenomena in concrete. This paper is about fracture behavior of concrete cylinder under lateral pressure. Concrete cylinders were made of high strength normal connote, steel fiber reinforced concrete and steel fiber reinforced polymer-impregnated concrete and concrete and the fracture behavior such as cracking propagation and ultimate load are observed. The fracture process zone is modelled by a Dugdale-Barenblatt type model with linear tension-softening curve and are implemented to the boundary element technique for the fracture analyses of the cylinders. The experimental results are compared with analysis results and tension-softening curves for the steel fiber reinforced concrete and steel fiber reinforced polymer-impregnated concrete are obtained by back analyses.

In this paper, a series of fracture tests are performed for the chemically prestressed steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) manufactured with addition of expansive additives for the study of fracture behavior and characteristics. Cracking loads of the chemically prestressed SFRC are greater than that of normal concrete and those are also increased by increasing of steel fiber volume. Thus, it is necessary to obtain optimum steel fiber volume to induce chemically prestressing effectively to concrete members. The result of three-points bending tests shows that early-cracking resistance of the chemically prestressed SFRC is increased without increase of fracture energy. From the test, the tension softening curves are also obtained by poly-linear approximation method and simulated behaviors by using the determined tension softening curves agree with experimental results. And it is confirmed that cracking and ultimate behaviors of chemically prestressed SFRC can be predicted by using obtained fracture characteristics.

In this paper, the embedded crack approach that crack is modeled by discontinuous line inside finite element is applied for localized progressive fracture analyses. The algorithm for progressive fracture analyses of concrete structure are enhanced by introducing nonlinear softening curve and unloading algorithm of tension-softening curve which can simulate localized fracture of concrete. The failure analysis results ar compared with existing test results for varification.
This paper is about a progressive fracture analysis of concrete by boundary element method. From both displacement boundary integral equation and traction boundary integral equation of solids with cracks, a boundary integral equation for crack problem is derived. For the analysis of progressive fracture of concrete, fracture process zone is modelled based on Dugdale-Barenblatt model with linear tension-softening curve. By using the boundary element modeling, the progressive fractures of concrete beam and compact-tension specimens with various loading conditions are analyzed and compared with experiments. The analysis results show that the technique in this paper can predict the maximum strength and the nonlinear behavior of concrete including post-peak behavior.

The tension stiffening in reinforced concrete member means increase of stiffness caused by the effective tensile stress between cracks and the tension softening behavior of concrete. This paper presents on the tensile behavior and tension stiffening of RC tension members. Direct tension tests were performed with a main experimental variables such as concrete strength, rebar diameter and strength. The tension stiffening was analyzed from the load-displacement relationship and was compared with ACI code, CEB model and the proposed by Collins & Mitchell. The results are as follows : The tension behaviors of RC members were quite different from those of bare bar and were characterized by loading and concrete cracking steps. The effect of tension stiffening decreased rapidly as the rebar diameter and strength increased, and the concrete strength increased. The proposed by Collins & Mitchell described well the experimental results, regardless of rebar types and concrete. But, ACI code and CEB model described a little differently, depending on the types. The effect of tension stiffening in RC member was the biggest near at concrete cracking step and decreased gradually to the bare bar's behavior as loading closed to the breaking point. Thus, tension stiffening in RC members should be taken into account when the load-deflection characteristics of a member are required or a precise analysis near the load of concrete clacking is needed.

In this paper, a study on fracture characteristics of chemically prestressed mortar with addition of expansive additives was carried out. Uni-axial tension tests with reinforced mortar specimen restrained by embedded reinforcing bar and three point bending tests with notched steel fiber reinforced beams were carried out to verify the characteristics of the cracking behavior, the tension stiffening effect due to bond between rebar and mortar, and fracture characteristic. Tension stiffening curve for the chemically prestressed mortar was obtained from uni-axial tension test. And increased fracture energy due to the chemical prestress was also obtained from bending test and tension softening curve for chemically prestressed mortar was also obtained.

The tension stiffening effect, which means the maintaining a part of stiffness after cracking of concrete in tensile, exists at a reinforced concrete member because of the concrete softening and bonding stress between cracks. It is required to consider it for precise analysis and evaluation o structural behavior, due to the possibility of discrepancy between the actual behavior and the analysis without considering the tension stiffening effect. Making and adopting a tension stiffening model is the most simple and effective way for considering it at nonlinear analysis which indicated the estimation from models and experimental results were similar each others. The comparisons on RC beam were, also performed in order to analyzed the influence of concrete strength and steel ratio into the structural behavior. They indicated that the results from analysis estimated quite closely to the test results at low steel ratio, however, overestimated at high steel ratio. The overestimation increase linearly as concrete strength or steel ratio increased.

The softening behaviors of concrete have been the object of numerous experimental and numerical studies, because the load carrying capacity of cracked concrete structure is not zero. Numerical studies are devoted to the investigation of three-dimensional softening behaviors of concrete on the basis of a viscoplastic theory, which may be able to represent the effects of plasticity and also of rheology. In order to properly describe material behaviors corresponding to different stress levels, two surfaces in stress space are adopted; one is a yield surface, and the other is a failure or bounding surface. When a stress path reaches the failure surface, it is considered that the softening behaviors are initiated as micro-cracks coalesce and are simulated by assuming that the actual strain increments in the post-peak region are less than the equivalent viscoplastic strain increment. The experimental studies and the finite element analyses have been carried out under the displacement control. Numerically simulated results indicate that the model is able to predict the essential characteristics of concrete behaviors such as the non-linearity, stiffness degradation, different behaviors in tension and compression, and specially dilatation under uniaxial compression.
This paper proposes a method for predicting flexural strength of hybrid steel fiber-reinforced ultra-high strength concrete beams. It includes an experimental test framework and associated numerical analyses. The experimental program includes flexural test results of hybrid steel fiber-reinforced ultra-high strength concrete beams with steel fiber content of 1.5% by volume. Tensile softening characteristics play an important role in the structural behavior of steel fiber-reinforced ultra high performance concrete. Tension softening modeling is carried out by using crack equation based on fictitious crack and inverse analysis in which load-crack mouth opening displacement relationship is considered. The comparison of moment-curvature curves of the numerical analysis results with the test results shows a reasonable agreement. Therefore, the numerical results confirms that good prediction of flexural behavior of steel fiber-reinforced ultra high strength concrete beams can be achieved by employing the proposed method.

The nonlinear finite element method with eight noded isoparametric quadrilateral element for concrete and two noded element for reinforcement is used for the prediction of the behavior of reinforcement concrete structures. The disturbed state concept (DSC) including the hierarchical single surface (HISS) plasticity model with associated flow rule with modifications is used to characterize the constitutive behavior of concrete both in compression and in tension which is named DSC/HISS-CT. The HISS model is applied to shows the plastic behavior of concrete, and DSC for microcracking, fracture and softening simulations of concrete. It should be noted that the DSC expresses the behavior of a material element as a mixture of two interacting components and can include both softening and stiffening, while the classical damage approach assumes that cracks (damage) induced in a material treated acts as a void, with no strength. The DSC/HISS-CT is a unified model with different mechanism, which expresses the observed behavior in terms of interacting behavior of components; thus the mechanism in the DSC is much different than that of the damage model, which is based on physical cracks which has no strength and interaction with the undamaged part. This is the first time the DSC/HISS-CT model, with the capacity to account for both compression and tension yields, is applied for concrete materials. The DSC model allows also for the characterization of non-associative behavior through the use of disturbance. Elastic perfectly plastic behavior is assumed for modeling of steel reinforcement. The DSC model is validated at two levels: (1) specimen and (2) practical boundary value problem. For the specimen level, the predictions are obtained by the integration of the incremental constitutive relations. The FE procedure with DSC/HISS-CT model is used to obtain predictions for practical boundary value problems. Based on the comparisons between DSC/HISS-CT predictions, test data and ANSYS software predictions, it is found that the model provides highly satisfactory predictions. The model allows computation of microcracking during deformation leading to the fracture and failure; in the model, the critical disturbance, Dc, identifies fracture and failure.
