Fatigue behavior of mechanical structures welded with different filler metal

  • This paper describes an investigation on the effect of using three different filler metals on fatigue behavior of mechanical structures welded. The welding is carried out on the steel A510AP used for the manufacture of gas cisterns and pipes. The welding process used is manual welding with coated electrodes and automatic arc welding. Compact tension CT50 specimen has been used. The three zones of welded joint; filler metal FM, heat affected zone HAZ and base metal BM have been investigated. The results show that the crack growth rate CGR is decreasing respectively in BM, FM and HAZ; however, this variation decreases when stress intensity factor SIF increases. For low values of SIF, the CGR is inferior in the over-matched filler metal of which the value of mismatch M is near unity, but for high values of M the CGR is superior, and the effect of the over-matching on CGR becomes negative. No deviation of the crack growth path has been noticed.

Properties of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate / Triton X-100 Mixed Micelle

  • The cmc's of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/Triton X-100 surfactant mixtures were determined by surface tension measurement at various surfactant compositions. The cmc values were lower than those predicted from ideal mixture. The regular solution theory was applied to calculate the interaction parameter, micellar composition, and the activity coefficients of surfactants in the mixed micelle. The interaction parameter (${\beta}$) was - 2.1. The nonideality arised largely from decreased activity of SDS in the mixed micelle. The mean aggregation numbers (${\bar{n}}$) and micropolarity of hydrocarbon region of the mixed micelles were determined by luminescence probe techniques. The total aggregation number (${\bar{n}}_{SDS}+{\bar{n}}_{TX}$) in mixed micelles showed little dependency on the composition of the micelle. The apparent dielectric constant of the hydrocarbon region of the micelle vs micellar composition plot showed positive deviation from linearity. Emission and emission quenching of excited tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(Ⅱ) cation, $(Ru(bpy)_3^{2+})$, by methylviologen ($MV^{2+}$) were also investigated in the mixed micellar solutions. The quenching rate was lowest when the mole fraction of SDS in the surfactant mixtures (${\alpha}_{SDS}$) is about 0.25 and highest at ${\alpha}_{SDS}$ = 0.85. This was explained in terms of combined effects of binding of the cations with the micelle and mobility of the bound cations on the surface of the micelles.

  • Concrete is the well-used material in many architectural and civil structures. The behavior of concrete does exhibit a different characteristic in compression and tension, and it also shows an inelastic-nonlinear behavior. In addition, the concrete properties vary slightly depending on the environmental factor and manufacturer. These properties of concrete make the modeling or simulation of concrete material difficult. In reinforced concrete, particularly, there is a difficulty in bond-slip relationship between concrete and steel. However, in this paper, reserving remainder of these limits the finite element analysis for reinforced concrete beams through ABAQUS simulation has been carried out with some assumptions. Assumptions include the perfect bond of steel and concrete as well as the concrete damaged plasticity (CDP) in concrete property. There is a reasonable agreement between the experimental and numerical results, although the analytical strength and external rod deformation are slightly overestimated. The average and standard deviation between two results are 1.05 and 0.05, respectively. And the models and the computations lead to the evolution of fracture in bending beam.

Relationships of Psychological Factors to Stress and Heart Rate Variability as Stress Responses Induced by Cognitive Stressors (스트레스에 대한 심리 반응 유형과 심박변이도의 관련성)

  • Stress involves changes in behavior, autonomic function and the secretion of hormones. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) contributes to physiological adaptive process in short durations. In particular, heart rate variability (HRV) analysis is commonly used as a quantitative marker depicting the ANS activity related to mental stress. The aim of this study is to investigate correlations between psychological responses to stress and HRV indices induced by the cognitive stressor. Thirty-three participants rated their mental and physical symptoms occurred during the past two weeks on Stress Response Inventory (SRI), which is composed of seven stress factors that may influence the status of mental stress levels. Then, they underwent the psychophysiological procedures, which are collected electrocardiogram (ECG) signals during a cognitive stress task. HRV indices, the standard deviation of R-R interval (SDNN), root mean square of successive R-R interval difference (RMSSD) and low frequency (LF)/high frequency (HF) ratio were extracted from ECG signals. Physiological responses were calculated stress responses by subtracting mean of the baseline from the mean of recovery. Stress factors such as tension, aggression, depression, fatigue, and frustration were positively correlated to HRV indices. In particular, aggression had significant positive correlations to SDNN, RMSSD and LF/HF ratio. Increased aggressive responses to stress correlated with the increases of all HRV indices. This means the increased autonomic coactivation. Additionally, tension, depression, fatigue, and frustration were positively associated with RMSSD reflecting increases in parasympathetic activation. The autonomic coactivation may represent an integrated response to specific cognitive reactions such as the orienting response.

Analysis of the Current Collection Quality for Next Generation High-Speed Trains with Measurements of the Dynamic Contact Force (동적 접촉력 측정을 통한 차세대 고속열차의 집전성능 분석)

  • The contact force between the pantograph and the catenary is a key factor determining the current collection quality, as they can ensure stable electrical power to the train. In this study, we analyzed the dynamic contact force for HEMU-430X depending on the train speed. It was confirmed through the results that the standard deviation of the contact force increases with an increase in the train speed. It was also verified that the span of the catenary system is a very important factor with regard to the contact force when analyzed with frequency analysis. To secure stable power in speed that exceeds 400km/h, the statistical variation of the contact force should be minimized. To realize this, the catenary tension was increased and the mass of the pan-head was decreased. The ensuing effects were then quantitatively analyzed in terms of the contact force. In addition, the differences in the contact force between a tunnel and an open field were analyzed based on a frequency analysis.

Comparative Study on the Micellization of SDS/Brij 30, DBS/Brij 30, and SDS/DBS Mixed Surfactant Systems in Pure Water (순수 물에서 SDS/Brij 30, DBS/Brij 30 및 SDS/DBS 혼합계면활성제의 미셀화에 대한 비교연구)

  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the counter ion binding constant (B) for the mixed micellizations of DBS (sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate), SDS (sodium dodecylsulfate), and Brij 30 (polyoxyethylene(4) lauryl ether) at $25^{\circ}C$ in pure water were determined by the use of electric conductivity and surface tension measuring methods. Various thermodynamic parameters ($X_i,\;{\gamma}i,\;C_i,\;a_i^M,\;{\beta}$, and ${\Delta}H_{mix}$) were calculated and compared with each other mixed surfactant system by means of the equations derived from the nonideal mixed micellar model. The results show that the SDS molecule interacts more strongly with Brij 30 molecule than DBS molecule and that the SDS/Brij 30 mixed surfactant system has the greatest negative deviation from the ideal mixed micellar model and the SDS/DBS mixed system has followed almost the ideal mixed micellar model.

Repair of Unilateral Cleft Lip using Mulliken's Modification of Rotation Advancement (회전-신전법의 Mulliken 변형을 이용한 편측 구순열 수술)

  • Unilateral cleft lip is not a simple and independent problem in all aspects. nasal deformity results from the cleft lip, maxillary hypoplasia, and abnormal muscular pull on the nasal structures, including abnormal muscular tension on the alar base and abnormal position of the orbicularis oris muscle. Its gross and histopathologic characteristics include widening of the alar base, a midline deviation of the columella and septum to the noncleft side, dorsal displacement of the dome, lateral rotation of medial crura, buckling of the alar cartilage, and underdevelopment of the pyriform aperture. Since Dr. Millard first presented his method for repair of the unilateral cleft lip and nasal deformity in 1955, no other technique has gained as much popularity as the rotation-advancement principle. Principles established more than 50 years ago and techniques are evolving continuously. Unlike earlier procedures, this repair gives the surgeon the opportunity to manipulate the individual cleft elements through various modifications while maintaining Millard's original surgical and anatomical goals. Although this strategy is applied worldwide, successful execution is variable and highly operator dependent. Millard and many other surgeons have made technical variations to adjust the procedure to each specific patient, to address some of its faults, and to gain new advantages. We will review the Mulliken's modifications that Dr. Millard made to his original rotation-advancement principle and inform cases applied modifying the rotation-advancement principle.

  • Considering the effect by uncertainty in the structures, it is reasonable that the safety examination has to be performed by using method of reliability evaluation. Therefore, in this study, program is developed which can perform the reliability analysis or the dynamic response analysis more efficiently by formularizing the stochastic finite element analysis suitable for the existing reliability analysis about the cable stayed bridge suffering the seismic loads. Based on this program, the characteristic of dynamic responses is analyzed quantitatively by examining the average, the standard deviation and the coefficient of variance about the displacement, the resistance and the tension of cable according to the random variables. and the safety of cable stayed bridge is evaluated by examining of reliability index and failure probability

Analysis of Springback of Sheet Metal(I): Analytical Model Based on the Residual Differential Strain (박판재의 스프링백 해석(I)-잔류 변형율에 근거한 해석모델)

  • As the springback of sheet metal during unloading may cause deviation from a desired shape, accurate prediction of springback is essential for the design of sheet stamping operations. When considering the case of a sheet metal being bent to radius $\rho$ that is such that the maximum stress induced exceed the elastic limit of the material, plastic strain in the outer surface will occur and the material will take a permanent set: but since, on removing the bending moment, the recovery of the material is not uniform across the thickness, springback will occur and the radius $\rho$ will not be maintained. Furthermore, when a tensile load being applied to each end of specimen, the tensile stress due to bending is increased and the compressive stress is decreased or cancelled and eventually the whole specimen may be in varying degree of tension. On the removal of the applied load the specimen loses its elastic strain by contracting around the contour of the block, the radius $\rho$ will be determined by the residual differential strain. Therefore in this study the springback is analytically estimated by the residual differential strains between upper and lower surfaces of greatest radius after elastic recovery, and a springback model based on the bending moment is also analytically derived for comparison purpose.

Validity and Reliability on Psychometric Arthritis Impact Measurement Scale-Short Form (AIMS-SF) in Knee Osteoarthritis Patients (골관절염영향측정척도(AIMS-SF)의 타당도 및 신뢰도 - 일부 슬관절 골관절염 환자를 대상으로 -)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the validity and reliability on Psychometric Arthritis Impact Measurement Scale-Short Form (AIMS-SF) in patients with knee osteoarthritis(OA). Methods: The sample consisted of 62 patients who had received physical therapy at the physical therapy units of the Andong Medical Center, Sungso Hospital, Ahn Orthopedic Surgery Clinic, and St. Luke Clinic in Andong city in June 2006. Questionnaire on the AIMS-SF was recruited by 5 physical therapists. The internal structure and reliability of the scales were evaluated by means of item-internal consistency(Cronbach's alpha coefficient: ${\alpha}$), item-discriminant validity, Pearson's relation coefficient. To explore construct validity we conducted a principal component factor analysis with varimax rotation analysis. The criterion for factor extraction was an eigenvalue >1.0. Results: 62 OA patients's an average $age{\pm}standard$ deviation was $53.8{\pm}14.4$ years (range: $40{\sim}81$ yr). The internal consistency reliability of 11 items, as estimated by Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ coefficient, was high ranging $0.60{\sim}0.78$ (except for 0.40 for mobility level and -0.48 for mood). The internal consistency reliability of item-each scale was also high $0.82{\sim}0.93$ (except for 0.48 for mood). Of 11 items, the item-discriminant validity on 6 items was high (${\alpha}$ coefficient range: $0.11{\sim}0.25$), however, others (0.57 for tension level, 0.48 for arthritis pain, 0.41 for walking and bending, and 0.40 for work) were a little low. The construct validity by factor analysis was a little low. Conclusion: In conclusion, the results reported here confirm the validity and reliability of the AIMS-SF in patients with OA of the knee. The Collection of information on health status using this instrument was acceptable to patients. A further prospective multi-center study will be necessary to prove the construct validity.
