  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of transformation induced martensite on the tensile properties of Fe-20Mn-12Cr-3Ni-3Si alloy. α' and ε-martensite were formed by cold rolling, and these martensite were formed with according to the specific direction, surface relief and partially intersection. With an increasing degree of cold rolling, amount of α'-martensite was slowly increased, whereas amount of ε-martensite was rapidly increased. Volume fraction of ε-martensite formed by cold working was large than α'-martensite. Tensile strength was rapidly increase and elongation was rapidly decreased with an increasing of degree of cold rolling. This means that tensile strengh and elongation was greatly influenced by the volume fraction of ε-martensite formed by cold rolling then α'-martensite.

  • The effects of the ordering reaction on high temperature mechanical behavior is investigated by tensile tests at $2{\times}10^{-2}/s-3.3{\times}10^{-5}/s$ up to $745^{\circ}C$. The tensile deformed region is examined by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), TEM, and high resolution neutron diffraction (HRPD). The results showed that a plateau of tensile strength appeared at $150-500^{\circ}C$ whereas the elongation minimum occurred at about $600^{\circ}C$. This suggests that the occurrence of a plateau does not cause the elongation minimum. The temperature of the elongation minimum decreases with the strain rate. HRPD results show a lattice contraction in the tensile deformed specimen at the temperature of the plateau occurring region. The plateau of tensile strength, the lattice contraction, and the occurrence of serration appeared in the same temperature region.

  • The effects of Quenching and Partitioning (Q&P) and Annealed Martensite (AM) heat treatment on the microstructure and tensile properties were investigated for 0.24C-0.5Si-1.5Mn-1Al steels. The Q&P steels were annealed at a single phase ($\gamma$) or a dual phase (${\gamma}+{\alpha}$), followed by quenching to a temperature between $M_s$ and $M_f$. Then, enriching carbon was conducted to stabilize the austenite through the partitioning, followed by water quenching. The AM steels were intercritically annealed at a dual phase (${\gamma}+{\alpha}$) temperature and austempered at $M_s$ and $M_s{\pm}50^{\circ}C$, followed by cooling in oil quenching. The dual phase Q&P steels showed lower tensile strength and yieldyield strength than those of the single phase Q&P steels, and tThe elongation for the dual phase Q&P steel was partitioning 100s higher than that of that for the single phase Q&P steels as the partitioning time was less than 100s up to partitioning 100s. For AM steels, the tensile/yield strength decreased and the total elongation increased as the austempering temperature increased. The stability of the retained austenite controlled the elongation for Q&P steels and the volume fraction of the retained austenite controlled the elongation for AM steels.

  • To investigate the degradation of mechanical properties induced mainly by neutron irradiation, the tensile tests were conducted from room temperature to 300\\`c using the irradiated and the unirradiated Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube materials. The irradiated longitudinal and transverse specimens were collected from the coolant inlet, middle, and outlet parts of M-11 tube which had been operated in Wolsung CANDU Unit-1 and exposed to different operating temperatures and irradiation fluences. The different tensile behavior was characterized not by the fluences of irradiation but by the tensile loading direction. The transverse specimen showed the higher strength and lower elongation than those of the longitudinal one. It was believed that these phenomena resulted from the microstructure anisotropy caused by the extrusion process. The increased strength hardening and decreased elongation embrittlement of the irradiated material were compard to those of the unirradiated one. While the tensile strength of the inlet was higher than that of the outlet, the elongation of the inlet was lower than that of outlet. Considering the operation condition, it was proposed that the operating temperature could be a more effective parameter than the irradiation fluence for long-time life. Through the TEM observation, it was found that while the a-type dislocation density was increased, the c-type dislocation was not changed in the irradiated. The fact that the higher dislocation density was sequentially distributed over the inlet, the middle, and the outlet parts was consistent with the distribution of the tensile strength.

  • HIP diffusion bonding of Ni-based superalloys, cast Mar-M247 (MM247) and Udimet 720 (U720) powder, was experimentally and numerically studied. Subsolvus HIP treatment was optimized by investigating the variations of high temperature tensile properties of HIP-bonded specimens with powder size, HIP'ing time, etc. While the tensile strength at high temperatures showed no detectable changes, the tensile elongation and reduction in area were slightly increased as the powder size decreased from -140 mesh to -270 mesh. While as-HIP'ed U720 showed a high tensile strength comparable to that of lorded U720 alloy, the HIP diffusion-bonded specimen showed a strength lower than the forged U720 alloy and the cast MM247 alloy The increase of HIP'ing tune from 2 hours to 3 hours resulted in a rapid risc of tensile strength and elongation due to the disappearence of microvoids in the cast MM247. FEM simulation for HIP process was conducted by applying the McMeeking micromechanical model, which uses power-law creep model as constitutive equations. ABAQUS user subroutine CREEP with an implemented microscopic model was used for the simulation. Numerical simulation was shown to be essential for the near-net shape manufacturing as well as the HIP process optimization.

  • Cu-Sn based alloys were manufactured by gas atomization spray casting route in order to achieve a fine scale microstructure and a high tensile strength. The spray cast Cu-10Sn-2Ni-0.2Si alloy had an equiaxed grain microstructure, with no formation of brittle ${\delta}-Cu_{41}Sn_{11}$ phase. Aging treatment promoted the precipitation of finely distributed particles corresponding to ${\delta}-Ni_2Si$ intermetallic phase throughout the $\alpha$-(CuSn) matrix. The cold-rolled Cu-Sn-Ni-Si alloy had a very high tensile strength of 1200 MPa and an elongation of 5%. Subsequent aging treatment at $450^{\circ}C$ for 1h slightly reduced the tensile strength to 700 MPa and remarkably increased the elongation up to 30%. This result has been explained by coarsening the precipitates due to over aging and reducing the dislocation density due to annealing effects.

  • TiC particulate reinforced magnesium matrix composites were fabricated by melt stirring method. The effect of alloying elements on TiC particulate dispersion into molten magnesium and mechanical properties were investigated. The incorporation time is defined as the time required for dispersion of solid particles into molten metal. The incorporation time of TiC particles into molten pure magnesium was remarkably shorter and the particulated dispersion was more uniform than that of pure aluminum which was reported previously. The incorporation time was, prolonged by the addition of Al, Bi, Ca, Ce, Pb, Sn or Zn. The tensile strength increased and elongation decreased by the addition of Cu or Sn into the matrices and composites. Although, the tensile strength of the matrices and composites increased by alloying with Ca or Ce, the maximum elongation was observed at a content of about 1% for the matrices. By alloying with Zn, the tensile strength increased for the matrices and composites, but the elongation of the matrices increased. The pure magnesium and its alloy matrix composites reinforced with 20vol% TiC have the tensile strength of about 400MPa. This value is compared with the tensile strength of SiC whisker reinforced magnesium matrix composites fabricated by liquid infiltration method at the same volume fraction. There fore, the melt strirring method which has the advantages of simple process is considered to be efficient in fabricating magnesium matrix composites.

  • The utilization of excess whey is necessary to reduce dairy waste because the large amount of whey disposal in waste streams has caused environmental problems. During whey protein film production as the effective means of utilization of excess whey, we have examined the effects of pH, temperature, and plasticizers for water vapor permeability(WVP), tensile strength(TS), and elongation rate(%E) of the whey protein films. The 10% whey protein films had the highest WVP(28.73g$.$mm/kPa$.$day$.$㎡) and TS(1.85${\pm}$0.11Mpa). But, in this case, an increase of WVP was caused by the thickness of whey protein films. At the concentration of 8% whey protein, appropriate thickness was obtained. Whey protein films prepared at the pH 6.75 and 95$^{\circ}C$ showed lower WVP(28.38g$.$mm/kPa$.$day$.$㎡) and elongation rate(12.9%) and higher TS value(3.769${\pm}$0.407 MPa) than at the pH 6.75 and 75$^{\circ}C$. As the temperature increased, WVP of films decreased slightly and tensile strength increased slightly, while elongation rate decreased significantly. Higher WVP and TS were observed at pH6.75 compared to pH7-9. In contrast, significantly higher elongation was observed at pH 9comapred to pH6.75-8. Among the plasticizer types used, the addition of sorbitol showed the highest TS value(6.244${\pm}$0.297 MPa) at the concentration 0.4g sorbitol and elongation rate(49%) at the concentration of 0.6g sorbitol.

  • Ti-20%Zr-X%Cr(X=0,5) based alloys not containing hamful Al and V were newly designed in order to reveal their possibility for dental casting alloys, and melted in argon-arc casting machine. The mechanical properties were evaluated by using universal testing machine. The tensile strength and %elongaton of the alloys markedly increased with Cr content. The Ti-20%Zr-5%Cr alloy showed a similar tendency with Ti-6%Al-4%V alloy in tensile strength, but surpassed in %elongation. From these results, it was concluded that new alloys for successful dental casting materials should be designed as Ti-Zr-Cr based alloys.
