  • Soy protein isolate (SPI)-based nanocomposite films with three different types of nanoclays, such as Cloisite $Na^+$, Cloisite 20A, and Cloisite 30B, were prepared using a solution casting method, and their optical, tensile, and water vapor barrier properties were determined to investigate the effect of nano-clay type on film properties. Among the tested nanoclays, Cloisite $Na^+$, a hydrophilic montmorillonite (MMT), exhibited the highest transparency with least opaqueness, the highest tensile strength, and the highest water vapor barrier properties, indicating Cloisite $Na^+$ is the most compatible with SPI polymer matrix to form nanocomposite films. The film properties of SPI/Cloisite $Na^+$ nanocomposite films were strongly dependent on the concentration of the clay. Film properties such as optical, tensile, and water vapor barrier properties improved significantly (p<0.05) as the concentration of clay increased. However, the effectiveness of addition of the clay reduced above a certain level (i.e., 5wt%), indicating that there is an optimum amount of clay addition to exploit the full advantage of nanocmposite films.

  • In this paper, notched bar tensile tests of Inconel 617 were performed at room ($20^{\circ}C$) and elevated ($800^{\circ}C$) temperature. Finite element analyses are also performed. It is found that, at the room temperature, smooth bar tensile test results could be used to simulate notched bar tensile tests. However, at the elevated temperature, notched bar tensile test results can not be simulated from smooth bar tensile test results. Metallurgical examination reveals that strength weakening results from many cavities over the specimens for smooth bar test at the elevated temperature. "True" tensile properties at the elevated temperature is found using FE simulations. It also suggests that cautious should be taken to determine tensile properties of Inconel 617 at elevated temperatures using smooth bar tests.

  • Steel fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete (SFRSCC) is a relatively new composite material which congregates the benefits of self-compacting concrete (SCC) technology with the profits derived from the fiber addition to a brittle cementitious matrix. Steel fibers improve many of the properties of SCC elements including tensile strength, toughness, energy absorption capacity and fracture toughness. Modification in the mix design of SCC may have a significant influence on the SFRSCC mechanical properties. Therefore, it is vital to investigate whether all of the assumed hypotheses for steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) are also valid for SFRSCC structures. Although available research regarding the influence of steel fibers on the properties of SFRSCC is limited, this paper investigates material's mechanical properties. The present study includes: a) evaluation and comparison of the current analytical models used for estimating the mechanical properties of SFRSCC and SFRC, b) proposing new relationships for SFRSCC mixtures mechanical properties. The investigated mechanical properties are based on the available experimental results and include: compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, strain at peak compressive strength, tensile strength, and compressive and tensile stress-strain curves.

  • The nondestructive evaluation system consisted of a ball indentation tester and a ultrasonic tester was developed to evaluate material properties. The relations between the parameters from test results using the system and the results of tensile and fracture toughness tests were investigated. The fracture toughness and tensile properties could be determined using the system. Some metallic materials were experimented to predict the fracture toughness and tensile properties and verify the relations between them. The predicted fracture toughness and tensile properties show a good agreement with the results obtained by conventional tests. It is found that the material properties and the material degradation can be evaluated using the nondestructive evaluation system.

  • Magnesium alloys have high strength to weight ratio and are extremely attractive for applications in transport industry. Most of structural magnesium alloys are manufactured by die casting process. The tensile properties of AZ91HP magnesium alloy were investigated after die casting under various die casting conditions. After die casting by using cold chamber machine, the volume porosity of specimens was examined with density method. With the increase of the volume porosity of specimens, both the tensile strength and elongation were significantly decreased, however the 0.2% offset strength was almost independent of the amount of porosity. With the increase of crystal pressure from 500 to 900 bar during die casting, the volume porosity was decreased, which resulted in the increase of the tensile strength. The mould temperature within the range of $150{\sim}250^{\circ}C$ has not influenced the microstructure with the eutectic phase and tensile properties of specimens. The tensile strength was the highest at 90m/sec of gate speed.

  • Glass fiber reinforced nylon has been used in many plastic industries. Mechanical properties of reinforced plastics depend upon types of glass fiber as well as loading of glass fiber. Tensile properties of glass fiber reinforced nylon66 have been studied for different glass fiber types and sizes. Types of glass fibers were circular and flat, and diameters were 7, 10, and 13 micrometers. Orientations of glass fibers in the matrix of nylon66 have been analyzed through X-ray CT. Tensile specimens were prepared by cutting out of square plates of $100{\times}100{\times}3mm$ with different angles such as 0, 45, and $90^{\circ}$ to the flow direction. As the loading of glass fiber increases to 45 wt% tensile strength increases up 2.5 times compare with neat nylon66. Anisotropic tensile strength has been observed and minimum tensile strength was measured in the specimen cut from perpendicular to the flow direction.

  • This work presents the tensile properties and water uptake behavior of plasma treated abaca fibers reinforced epoxy composites. The composites were prepared by vacuum assisted resin transfer molding. The effects of treatment on tensile properties and sorption characteristics of abaca fiber composites in distilled water and salt solution at room temperature were investigated. The tensile strength of the composites increased with plasma treatment. With plasma treatment, an improvement of 92.9% was obtained in 2.5 min exposure time in plasma. This is attributed to high fiber-matrix compatibility. Less improvement on tensile properties of hybrid treatment of sodium hydroxide and plasma was obtained. However, both treatments reduced overall water uptake in distilled water and salt solution. Hydrophilicity of the fibers decreased upon plasma and sodium hydroxide treatment, which decreases water uptake.

  • In order to develop electrical insulation materials, epoxy-nanosilica-microsilica mixture composites (ENMC) was synthesized, and mechanical properties such as their tensile and flexural strength, and AC insulation breakdown strength were investigated. Properties of mechanical strength and AC insulation breakdown strength are analyzed as scale and shape parameter with respect to weibull plot. Their tensile and flexural strength, AC insulation breakdown strength were compared original epoxy or EMC to ENMC. The 4 phr nano-silica addition and the 65 wt% micron-silica mixture composite (ENMC) was found to have the highest tensile and flexural strength. In the tensile strength was improved 29%, and flexural strength was improved 60.9% higher than those of the original epoxy. In the insulation breakdown strength, ENMC_4 phr was improved 17% and ENMC_5 phr was improved 15.8% higher than those of the EMC.

  • The tensile strength of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastics under a high strain rate was experimentally investigated. A high-strain-rate test was performed using the tension-type split Hopkinson bar technique. In order to obtain the tensile stress-strain relations, a special fixture was used for the impact tensile specimen. The experimental results demonstrated that the tensile modulus and strength in the longitudinal direction are independent of the strain rate. In contrast, the tensile properties in the transverse direction and the shear properties increase with the strain rate. Moreover, it was observed that the strain-rate dependence of the shear strength is much stronger than that of the transverse strength. The tensile strength of off-axis specimens was measured using an oblique tab, and the experimental results were compared with the tensile strength predicted based on the Tsai-Hill failure criterion. It was concluded that the tensile strength can be characterized quite well using the above failure criterion under dynamic loading conditions.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) have been recently investigated as an alternative material for Geosynthetics to improve soil properties. One of the factors influencing the fiber orientation and mechanical properties of CFRP is the effect of soil overburden pressure. This study investigates the tensile behavior of cast-in-place CFRP. During the curing time of specimens, a wide range of normal stress is applied on specimens sandwiched between the soils. Two different soil types are used to determine the effect of soil grain size on the mechanical properties of CFRP. Specimens are also prepared with different specifications such as curing time and mixing soil in to the epoxy. In this study, tensile tests are conducted to investigate the effect of such parameters on tensile behavior of CFRP. The experimental results indicate that by increasing the normal stress and soil grain size, the ultimate tensile strength and the corresponding strain of CFRP decrease; however, reduction in elastic modulus is not noticeable. It should be noted that, increasing the curing period of epoxy resin and mixing soil in to the epoxy have no significant effect on the tensile properties of CFRP.
